If a flight attendant’s service upset you, note the facts and contact the airline’s customer-service channel first. If the issue involves disability access, discrimination, safety, security, or sexual misconduct, use the dedicated reporting route instead. The next steps depend on where your flight operates: the U.S. and UK procedures below are examples, not worldwide rules.
While you’re still on the flight
If it is an ordinary service problem, calmly describe the specific issue or request and keep the conversation brief and factual. Do not let a dispute about courtesy distract from safety: follow crew instructions. If there is an urgent threat, safety or security concern, or possible crime, seek the appropriate immediate help rather than treating it as a routine customer-service complaint. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fly Rights guide tells passengers to listen to crew members and do what they say.

Record what happened
Write down the details as soon as you can, while your memory is fresh. Keep the account factual: describe what was said or done without guessing at motives. The DOT’s air travel complaint guidance says a complaint should include contact details, a description of the problem, booking or itinerary information, flight details, and available supporting documents.

- Where in the cabin the incident occurred.
- What was said or done, what you asked for, and how the crew member responded.
- Names or descriptions of people involved and any witnesses, if known.
- Booking records, boarding pass or itinerary, and relevant correspondence or other supporting documents.
For ordinary service complaints, contact the airline first
Use the airline’s published complaint channel or customer-service office. Explain what happened, how it affected you, and what outcome you are seeking. A clear, reasonable request—such as an explanation or apology—helps the airline understand what would address your concern. The cited guidance does not establish compensation as an automatic legal entitlement for ordinary discourtesy.

For covered written consumer complaints about U.S. air service, DOT guidance says airlines must acknowledge the complaint within 30 days and provide a substantive response within 60 days. These are U.S. requirements for complaints within the rule’s scope, not global deadlines. See the DOT’s complaint guidance for the applicable details.
Escalate through the route that fits your issue and location
U.S.-related air service
If the airline has not resolved an ordinary consumer complaint, you can submit it through the DOT’s air travel complaint form. DOT generally forwards ordinary complaints to the airline or ticket agent for a direct response, with a copy to DOT. It does not investigate every non-civil-rights complaint, and filing does not guarantee an individual investigation or compensation. Complaint records can help DOT identify patterns and inform oversight or rulemaking.

UK complaints
Write to the airline or airport first. If you remain dissatisfied, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says you may be able to refer the complaint to an applicable alternative dispute resolution (ADR) body. If the airline does not participate in an ADR agreement, the CAA’s Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT) may be an option. PACT can advise and take up a complaint but cannot impose a decision; a CAA-approved ADR body can. Check the airline’s current participation and the applicable scheme on the CAA’s ADR information page. The CAA notes that its ADR policy is under review in light of UK statutory changes, so confirm current guidance before relying on a route.

- Disability access or accommodation: Ask the airline for its Complaint Resolution Official (CRO), an airline expert authorized to resolve disability complaints on its behalf. Disability discrimination can also be reported through DOT’s civil-rights process, described in its air travel complaint guidance.
- Discrimination: DOT says it investigates complaints alleging discrimination based on disability, race, color, national origin, religion, sex, or ancestry. Describe the specific conduct and the facts that lead you to raise a protected-ground concern; avoid speculation.
- Aviation safety: Contact the FAA rather than treating the matter as a consumer-service issue.
- Security: Contact the TSA.
- Sexual misconduct: DOT’s complaint form directs allegations to the FBI and notes FAA authority regarding sexual assault or threats of sexual assault aboard aircraft. These matters are distinct from a routine courtesy complaint.
