First confirm that your exact Samsung Galaxy model supports a microSD card. If it does, power the phone off, reseat and inspect the card, then test it in another compatible device before formatting or replacing it. That sequence helps identify whether the problem is the card, the phone, or the card’s format—without risking files unnecessarily.
1. Confirm your Galaxy model supports microSD
Not every Samsung phone or tablet has a microSD slot. Check the exact model number in its manual or specifications before troubleshooting further; a model with no slot cannot be made compatible by buying another card. Capacity support also varies by model. Samsung’s general overview lists microSD cards up to 2 GB, microSDHC up to 32 GB, and microSDXC above 32 GB through 2 TB, but those category ranges do not guarantee that a particular phone supports every capacity in that range. 2. Power off, inspect, and reseat the card
- Turn the phone off. Removing the tray while the phone is on can interrupt access to the card.
- Eject the tray using the proper tool. Insert the ejector tool into the tray opening, not a microphone or speaker hole. Follow the model-specific instructions if the tray or side-key layout differs.
- Inspect the card and tray. Look for visible damage or dust. If needed, gently wipe the card with a soft cloth.
- Reinsert the card in the correct orientation and close the tray fully.
- Turn the phone on and check whether it detects the card.

3. Test the card in another device
Try the card in another compatible phone or tablet, or use a suitable card reader with a computer. If it is readable elsewhere, the Samsung phone is a more likely source of the problem. If it fails in multiple compatible devices, the card may be damaged.

A computer can read file systems that Android does not, so a card working on a PC does not by itself prove that the phone can use its current format. Samsung describes this distinction in its SD card guidance. If possible, also test a known-good, compatible card in the Samsung phone: that cross-check helps distinguish a card fault from a phone-side issue.
4. Try reversible software steps
- Restart the phone. If a normal restart does not help, try a force restart using the instructions for your model.
- Check in Safe mode. Safe mode can help determine whether a downloaded app is interfering with card access. The steps for entering it vary by model and software version.
- Check for updates. Samsung’s regional troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that device software and related apps are up to date.

5. Back up files before formatting
Formatting deletes everything on the card. Samsung states in its support guidance: “Formatting will erase all data stored on the SD card.” If the card is readable in another device, copy important files to a separate location before considering a format.
Check the file system
Samsung’s general guidance identifies FAT32 and exFAT as compatible formats, with exFAT preferred; it lists NTFS and APFS as incompatible. FAT32 is available for cards under 32 GB and cannot store individual files larger than 4 GB. Formatting options and steps depend on the phone and software. If available, the phone may offer a format option in Storage settings or the My Files app. Samsung also points to the SD Association’s Memory Card Formatter for PC or Mac if the phone cannot format the card.

Be cautious with Adoptable storage
Samsung says its Android devices do not support Android’s Adoptable storage feature. A card set up as adoptable storage on another device may be encrypted and not portable. Samsung warns that removing this setup may require a factory reset of the phone and formatting the card, so do not reset or format casually if the files matter.

- The card fails in multiple compatible devices: After recovering anything you can, replacement may be appropriate.
- A known-good compatible card is also not detected: The phone, slot, or tray may be at fault; contact Samsung support or a service center.
- The tray is stuck or visibly damaged: Do not force it; arrange service.
Before buying a replacement, verify that the exact phone model has a microSD slot and check its model-specific capacity limit. For a replacement, Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video because of its capacity and read/write speed; a regular microSD or microSDHC card may suffice for less demanding still photography.
