Read the sticker’s wording and identify who issued it before removing or covering anything. It could be a contamination warning, a notice that collection was refused, or simply an identification mark. If the message or bin label seems wrong, contact the council or waste collector responsible for your service and ask whether the bin needs relabeling and whether pickup is affected.
First, work out what the sticker is for
Sticker colors are not a reliable guide across different places. Read the full message, look for the issuing council or contractor, and check whether it names a problem, identifies the bin, or gives instructions. A quick photo can help you explain the issue; note the bin type, address, and collection date.

| Possible sticker | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Contamination notice | Items in the bin may not belong in that waste stream. Some services will hold the bin until the material is removed. | Check the local sorting rules, remove only the items identified, and follow the service’s instructions for the next collection. |
| Non-collection or safety notice | The bin may not have been emptied because of a listed barrier, access issue, or other violation. | Address the stated problem and contact the service if the reason is incorrect or unclear. |
| Identification or audit mark | The mark may identify the bin or be part of a local tracking system; it does not necessarily mean collection was refused. | Do not peel it off until the service confirms what it is. |
| Wrong waste-stream or address label | The bin may have been labeled or delivered incorrectly. | Contact the bin owner or collection authority to confirm the label and correct process. |
If it is a contamination sticker
Use the sorting guidance for your own address and collection service, not a color guide or list from another city. Remove the items the local service identifies as incorrect, then follow its stated instructions about when to put the bin out again. The next step differs by area: Newcastle City Council, for example, tells residents to remove incorrect items and present the bin on the next scheduled collection (Newcastle’s guidance), while the London Borough of Waltham Forest says a contaminated bin will not be emptied until the wrong material is removed (Waltham Forest’s guidance). Cardiff Council likewise advises removing incorrect items before the next collection (Cardiff’s sticker guidance).
Do not assume a rejected bin can be re-presented immediately, or that it will be collected on a particular day. Check the current instructions for your service.

If the sticker says the bin was not collected
Look for the reason printed on the notice and compare it with what happened at your property. A notice may point to contamination, a safety concern, or another barrier to collection. Correct a problem you can verify; if the stated reason does not fit, use the service’s official contact or dispute route and provide the sticker photo, address, bin type, and collection date.
Local procedures differ. Waltham Forest lets residents dispute the non-collection reason shown online. In San Diego, the Environmental Services Department distinguishes an “Oops” contamination tag from a bright-orange non-collection violation tag; the orange tag lists barriers or safety concerns. The city advises residents to contact the department after correcting a non-collection issue (San Diego’s Container Check Feedback guidance).

If it may be an identification sticker or the wrong label
Do not remove or cover a mark just because it looks out of place. Christchurch City Council says its small yellow reflective sticker indicates an RFID tag and specifically instructs residents, “Please do not remove these.” The council describes contamination tags separately (Christchurch’s bin-checking guidance).

If the printed address or waste stream is wrong, or the bin may belong to someone else, contact the council or organization responsible for the bin. Check with neighbours if a delivery mix-up is plausible. Toronto’s process illustrates why it matters to use the current local route: its page directs residents to check with neighbours and report certain wrongly delivered bins to 311, but it directs blue-bin reports to Circular Materials following a change in residential recycling collection responsibility effective January 1, 2026. That is a Toronto-specific instruction, not a general reporting rule (Toronto’s wrong-bin delivery guidance).

What to ask the local service
Use the contact details on the sticker or the current council or collector website. Explain what the label says and what appears incorrect. Ask whether the sticker is a warning or an identification mark, whether collection is affected, and whether the bin needs relabeling or another service request. Keep the photo and any response until the issue is resolved.
Do not apply a replacement label, cover the existing one, or remove an official sticker unless the responsible service tells you to. The local authority’s instructions determine the right action; another city’s sticker colors, deadlines, and pickup process may not apply. Nottingham City Council, for example, has its own bin-sticker guidance and a separate bin-request route (Nottingham’s bin-sticker guidance).
