If your Pixel 6 starts draining faster, getting hot, or feeling slow after an Android update, the timing does not by itself prove the update caused a defect. Google says some extra battery use is normal while a Pixel downloads and optimizes new software. Start with reversible checks—battery use, updates, temperature, storage, and Safe Mode—before considering a factory reset.
First, distinguish temporary optimization from a continuing problem
Google Pixel Phone Help says, “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” The phone may be downloading and optimizing software and getting everything running. Google advises seeking help if unusually high drain remains after a few days. That is general guidance, not a guarantee that severe battery loss, heat, or lag will resolve on its own.

While you observe the phone, note when symptoms happen: during setup or backup restoration, while charging, during demanding apps, or even when the phone is idle. That context can help distinguish expected workload or temperature effects from app-related drain or persistent performance trouble.

Run battery diagnostics and inspect app use
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics and choose the battery-drain check if it is available. Google lists Battery diagnostics on Pixel 6 and later.
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and review the app view for apps using unusually high power, especially in the background.
- For an app with unusual background use, leave its battery setting at Optimized where that option is available. If a downloaded app appears to be the cause, consider force-stopping or uninstalling that app when appropriate; do not force-stop essential system services.
Keep Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled. Adaptive Battery learns your usage patterns and may restrict background activity for less-used apps. After setup or a factory reset, optimization can take longer to settle. Menu names and availability can vary with Android version.

If the phone is hot
Know when warmth can be expected
A Pixel can warm up during setup, backup restoration, large downloads or transfers, high-definition video recording, streaming, gaming, or hotspot use. These activities can generate more heat when the phone is charging at the same time.
Google says temperature protection can reduce CPU performance or charging speed, limit camera functions, reduce mobile data or Wi-Fi, or switch the phone to a low-power mode. Slowness while the phone is hot can therefore be protective behavior; by itself, it does not show that the update caused lasting damage.

Cool it safely
- If the phone is too hot, unplug it, move it to a cooler place, and stop using it until it cools.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight, hot vehicles, and enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces.
- Stop demanding apps, lower screen brightness, and use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data when practical.
- Use a case made for your specific Pixel model. If you are investigating heat, temporarily removing the case can help you see whether it contributes; a case is not a general fix for a software problem.
If the phone continues to turn off, contact Google Pixel Support.
If performance is slow
Restart and install available updates
- On Pixel 6 and later, press Power + Volume Up for a few seconds, then tap Restart.
- Check Settings > System > Software update and install any update offered for your phone.
- In the Play Store, open your profile menu and select Manage apps & devices to check for app updates.
These are standard troubleshooting steps; their usefulness does not establish that the preceding Android update was defective.

Check available storage
Open Settings > Storage and check how much space remains. Google warns that a Pixel can have problems when less than 10% of its storage is available. If you are below that level, free space by removing or moving files and apps you no longer need, then check whether performance improves.
Use Safe Mode to check for downloaded-app problems
Safe Mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the slowdown goes away in Safe Mode, a downloaded app may be involved. Remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, restarting normally and checking after each removal. If the problem remains in Safe Mode, continue with Google’s advanced troubleshooting guidance or contact support.

When to consider a factory reset
A factory reset is an advanced troubleshooting step, not the automatic response to an update. It removes data from the phone and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Back up anything you want to keep before resetting, and use Google’s advanced guidance or contact support if the problem persists rather than resetting without a backup.
When to contact support
Seek help if unusually high battery drain continues after a few days, if the phone repeatedly shuts down, or if problems persist after the relevant checks. Tell support when the symptoms began and whether they occur while charging, idle, or using particular apps. Google provides security updates for Pixel phones for at least five years from first availability on the Google Store in the US, but that policy does not identify a particular update as the cause of these symptoms or guarantee that a later update will fix them.
