First find out whether your phone is eligible for the update. If it is, troubleshoot the failed download or installation; if it is not, check whether it still receives security updates and decide how to protect your data and accounts. A phone that cannot install the newest major version is not necessarily unsupported, and an update error alone does not prove it has reached its support limit.
Identify the phone and its update status
Before changing settings or retrying an update, record the exact model and software details. This helps distinguish an eligible phone with a temporary problem from one that cannot receive that release.

On Android
Open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) and find Android version. Record the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number. Menu names may vary by manufacturer. These are separate status fields: a Google Play system update is not the same as an Android version upgrade or an Android security patch. Open Settings > General > About to find the model and installed software version. Check the model against Apple’s compatibility information for the particular iOS release you want; compatibility can differ from one release to another.

Check for an update through Settings
Use the phone’s built-in update screen and install only software offered for that device. Back up important data before a major update, connect to a reliable network, and keep the phone powered during installation.
- Android: Open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the on-screen steps. Some Pixel devices label this screen Software updates. Google recommends Wi-Fi and at least 75% battery before updating.
- iPhone: Open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the instructions if an update is available.
Android update availability varies by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier. Google notes that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. If no update appears, do not assume the phone is unsupported until you check the exact model’s official support information.

If an update is offered but will not install
Rule out common download and installation problems before concluding the phone is ineligible. Check that the connection is stable, that enough storage is available, and that the device has power. Retry using the phone’s update screen and follow any error-specific instructions.

Google says a download that starts but does not finish may be retried automatically over the next few days. Check the update screen again later. If the problem continues, review Google’s Android update instructions and the phone maker’s guidance for your model.

iPhone: check the cause of the wireless update failure
Apple lists several possible causes: the device is incompatible with the release, storage is insufficient, the download is slow, the phone cannot connect to the update server, or the download did not complete. Its iPhone and iPad update troubleshooting steps explain what to check. If the model is incompatible with the target release, freeing storage or changing networks will not make that release available.
If no newer version is offered
Verify the official support status for the exact model and market. Android release schedules depend on the manufacturer and, in some cases, the carrier; check the manufacturer’s official support page or ask the manufacturer or carrier if the schedule is unclear. For iPhone, compare the model with Apple’s compatibility information for the target iOS version.

A rollout delay, a full storage drive, or one failed update attempt is not proof that support has ended. Eligibility for the newest major release and continued security support are also different questions.
Check security updates separately from major OS upgrades
A phone may be unable to move to the newest Android or iOS version yet still receive security fixes on an older software branch. Check the device’s current security-patch date and the manufacturer’s or Apple’s official release information for that model. An old version number by itself does not establish an end-of-support date.

Apple Support calls keeping software up to date “the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” If you cannot update an eligible Apple device, follow Apple’s guidance on updating iOS to protect against web attacks. It says eligible users who cannot update can consider enabling Lockdown Mode. That is a possible mitigation for some users, not a replacement for supported software or a universal fix.
Decide whether to keep using the phone
If the phone still receives security updates and runs the apps and features you need, you may be able to keep using it while planning your next step. If it no longer receives security fixes, avoid using it for sensitive accounts where practical and prioritize moving essential accounts and data to a currently supported device. Replacing it is the clearest long-term option once it has reached its support limit or can no longer run essential apps.
When choosing a replacement, check the new model’s published security-update commitment for your region, compatibility with your carrier and network, price, battery and repair condition, storage, accessibility features, required apps, and data-migration options. Confirm support for the exact model before buying; a new phone is not the automatic solution to a temporary update error.
Why an unofficial Android system is not a routine fix
A custom or modified Android system may appear to offer a newer version, but it is not a guaranteed way to extend safe support. Google warns that modified or rooted Android versions may lose automatic security updates and other built-in protections. Compatibility, maintenance, banking-app behavior, bootloader requirements, and the risk of data loss depend on the particular device and software.
Google advises restoring the original operating system on a modified device. If you keep the modified system, Google suggests using a different device for important accounts and sensitive data. Treat installing an unofficial system as an advanced, device-specific decision—not as the standard remedy for a failed update.
