What to Do If Your Paycheck Is Lower After a Raise

A smaller paycheck after a raise can reflect a payroll error, changed withholding, or a deduction. Compare matching statements and trace the line that changed.

If your paycheck is lower after a raise, compare the pay statements line by line before changing anything. First check whether your gross pay reflects the new rate and correct hours; then identify whether taxes, benefits, or another deduction reduced your take-home pay. A smaller deposit alone does not show that your employer underpaid you—or that your final tax bill increased.

Compare matching pay periods from gross pay to net pay

Use statements covering the same length of time, ideally one before and one after the raise took effect. Pay stubs are not required by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) generally, though state laws may require them. Covered employers must keep records of wages, additions and deductions, pay periods, and pay dates. The Department of Labor explains federal recordkeeping requirements.

  • Gross pay and rate: Check the rate or salary, the raise’s effective date, and whether the statement covers a full pay period at the new rate.
  • Hours and other earnings: Verify hours, overtime, commission, bonuses, or retroactive pay against what you worked or were owed.
  • Taxes: Compare federal income-tax withholding, state and local withholding, and Social Security and Medicare lines. Federal IRS guidance does not explain every state or local withholding rule.
  • Benefits and other deductions: Look for changes to health insurance, retirement contributions, flexible spending, garnishments, or other deductions. Ask when and why a changed item began.
  • Net pay: Compare the deposit only after accounting for all the lines above. Net pay is gross pay minus withholding and deductions.

Note which changed lines appear temporary, such as a one-time bonus withholding, and which recur each pay period. That distinction helps explain whether the difference is likely to continue.

If gross pay did not rise as expected, ask about the wages

Check the raise’s effective date against the dates on the statement. A check issued after the raise may include only part of a pay period at the higher rate, depending on the effective date and payroll schedule. If the rate, hours, or total gross wages still do not match the agreement and your records, ask payroll to reconcile them and explain whether any wages were missed.

Keep the pay statements and the raise confirmation. Ask for a written breakdown of the pay-period dates, rate, hours, and any correction or catch-up payment. Whether a promised-wage shortfall violates state law, and what remedy or deadline applies, depends on your location and circumstances.

If gross pay rose but take-home pay fell, trace the changed line

A raise affects gross wages; take-home pay also depends on withholding and deductions. Use the statement comparison to locate the actual cause rather than assuming the raise itself triggered a particular tax or deduction.

Federal income-tax withholding

Federal withholding on regular wages depends in part on earnings and the information on your Form W-4, which tells your employer about matters such as filing status, multiple jobs, credits, other income, deductions, and additional withholding. The IRS Form W-4 guidance explains how employers use the form.

A raise does not mean all your earnings are automatically taxed at a higher marginal rate. Withholding is money paid toward your eventual tax liability; it is not the same thing as your final tax calculation.

Bonus, commission, or retroactive pay

Find out how payroll recorded any separately identified supplemental wages. IRS Publication 15 (2026) includes bonuses, commissions, overtime, and retroactive pay increases among supplemental wages and describes different withholding methods. Under specified conditions, an employer may use a flat 22% federal withholding method for certain separately identified supplemental wages of $1 million or less. That is a withholding method, not necessarily your final tax rate. See the IRS Publication 15 (2026) for the applicable conditions and methods. A raise in regular wages is not automatically a bonus.

State, local, and payroll taxes

Compare state and local income-tax withholding along with Social Security and Medicare. The cited IRS guidance here focuses primarily on federal income-tax withholding, so ask payroll or consult your state’s tax authority if one of these lines changed unexpectedly.

Benefits and other deductions

Ask whether a benefit premium, retirement contribution, garnishment, or other deduction changed in amount or timing. A deduction may be unrelated to the raise, even if it first appears on the same check. For covered workers, employer-benefit deductions for items such as tools or uniforms cannot reduce wages below the applicable federal minimum wage or overtime due under the FLSA; state law may offer additional protections. The DOL’s FLSA reference guide describes federal protections.

Estimate withholding before submitting a new W-4

If federal withholding appears to have changed, or your income or circumstances changed, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to assess whether your withholding is appropriate. It considers your broader situation, rather than just the size of the raise.

If the estimate indicates you should adjust federal withholding, submit a revised Form W-4 to your employer. The IRS says an employer generally must put a revised form into effect no later than the start of the first payroll period ending on or after 30 days from receiving it. Lowering withholding can increase your deposits while leaving less paid toward your eventual tax bill. For tax year 2026, IRS Publication 505 describes specific circumstances that can require a new W-4; do not assume a raise alone triggers that rule.

Ask payroll for a line-by-line reconciliation

Send payroll the two statements and the raise’s effective date. Keep the request factual and ask about each changed line. You can adapt this message:

Could you compare my pay statements for [period before] and [period after]? My raise was effective [date]. Please confirm the rate and hours used, whether all wages for the new rate were included, and what caused the change in each tax-withholding or deduction line. If any wages were missed, please explain the correction and payment date.

Save your statements, the raise confirmation, and payroll’s written reply. If an explanation is unclear, ask for the pay-period dates and a written breakdown.

Choose the right agency if wages may be owed

Do not assume every unexplained paycheck difference is illegal. First establish whether the agreed rate and earned wages were paid, then identify which withholding or deduction changed. The federal and state routes differ:

  • Possible federal minimum-wage or overtime issue: The FLSA covers federal minimum wage, overtime, and recordkeeping. Contact the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division for a potential issue within that jurisdiction. Its FLSA FAQ explains what federal law covers.
  • Promised wages above federal minimum-wage and overtime requirements: The FLSA does not provide a collection procedure for an employee’s usual or promised wages above those federal requirements. Some states do provide claim procedures. Contact your state labor agency about a state-law wage-payment issue; the DOL worker complaint FAQ points workers to the appropriate agency for state-law matters.

State and local rules, available remedies, and deadlines vary. Without a specific location and facts, no universal recovery procedure or deadline can be stated.
