Start with the exact MacBook model and the accessory’s job: connecting data, charging, showing video, or doing several things at once. Then match the accessory’s connector and capabilities to that Mac. A USB-C-shaped plug alone does not guarantee that every feature will work, and not every MacBook ships with the same ports or power accessories.
First, identify your MacBook and the accessory’s task
- On your Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Note the model name, then look up that model’s specifications and port guidance in Apple’s guide to identifying Mac ports. MacBook ports and capabilities vary by model and generation.
- Look at the accessory’s plug and establish what you need it to do: transfer data, charge the Mac or another device, send video to a display, provide audio, or combine functions.
- Check the accessory maker’s compatibility notes for the exact Mac and task. Apple also recommends checking product documentation or asking the manufacturer when choosing an adapter or cable; see Apple’s MacBook Air adapter and cable guidance or its MacBook Pro adapter and cable guidance.
Choose the simplest adapter or cable that does the job

For a single accessory, a simple adapter or cable is usually all that is needed. Choose a hub only when you actually need several connections together. Apple’s general MacBook Air guide says that adapters, cables, and other accessories are sold separately; that does not establish what was included with every MacBook model or purchase configuration.

Check charging compatibility before reusing an old charger
If your Mac charges over USB-C, Apple says it can use a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD). For the best charging experience, Apple recommends using a source that provides at least the minimum wattage specified for your Mac. Check the exact model’s recommended wattage in Apple’s power-adapter guidance. A compatible lower-wattage source may charge more slowly; USB-C compatibility alone does not mean the charging speed will match the recommended adapter.

Fast charging has additional model and equipment requirements. Apple’s fast-charge guidance for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro describes eligibility for MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later and 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, with the required charger and cable depending on the model. Apple says eligible combinations can charge up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes. Confirm the current requirements for your exact Mac before buying equipment for fast charging.

If your Mac uses magnetic charging, verify the connector generation. MagSafe 2 and MagSafe power adapters are not compatible with MagSafe 3; Apple’s Mac port identification guide can help distinguish port types.
Why USB-C does not always mean compatible
USB-C describes a connector shape, not every capability an accessory may offer. Two USB-C connections may differ in supported data, video, or charging functions. Check the Mac’s specifications and the accessory documentation for the function you need. For example, Apple’s 2026 MacBook Air guide describes two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, says they can also charge over USB-C, and specifies data transfers up to 40 Gbit/s for those ports. That information applies to the model described in that guide, not automatically to other MacBook generations.

For video, verify both the Mac’s supported external displays and the adapter or cable’s output. For charging, verify USB Power Delivery support and the model’s recommended wattage. For data, confirm the relevant accessory and port support the needed transfer capability. These checks help avoid buying an adapter that fits physically but cannot perform the required task.

Do not assume that every MacBook package includes the same charger, cable, or adapter. Check the order confirmation and the packaging for the exact model and purchase configuration, then compare them with the product documentation or ask the seller or Apple Support if something expected is absent. Apple’s general adapter guidance says adapters, cables, and other accessories are sold separately, but the sources cited here do not establish a universal in-box list for every model, region, and configuration.

- Write down the exact MacBook model from Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Identify the accessory plug and the specific job it must perform.
- Check the Mac’s port and display specifications and the accessory maker’s compatibility information.
- Buy one adapter or cable for one connection; choose a multiport adapter only if you need multiple connections, such as HDMI, USB-A, and charging, at once.
- For a charger, check USB Power Delivery support and Apple’s model-specific recommended wattage. Treat fast charging as a separate compatibility check.
