Save your proof of purchase, warranty, photos or video, and a dated record of every support contact. Dead-pixel thresholds, battery coverage, and legal remedies vary by model, seller, and country, so there is no universal deadline or guaranteed fix.
What to do first when a new laptop is defective
- Record the problem. Note when it happens and what you see. For a screen pixel, photograph or film it against a plain background and note whether it is dark, bright, or stuck on a color. For a battery concern, record charging behavior, unexpected shutdowns, and any error messages without assuming a cause.
- Gather purchase and device details. Keep the receipt or order confirmation, purchase date, seller name, order number, laptop model and serial number, and written warranty. Save original documents and copies of messages or online forms.
- Check the seller’s terms and deadline. Look at the order page, receipt, or the retailer’s return and defect-reporting policy. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to check the policy and act promptly; after the seller’s deadline, the manufacturer may need to handle the claim. See the FTC’s guidance on returns, refunds, and other resolutions.
- Contact the seller through a traceable channel. Describe the fault factually, include the purchase and model details, and request a specific outcome: refund, exchange, repair, or another resolution. The FTC advises: “Tell the business what happened. Give details about the problem, and about the resolution you want.” Keep a dated log of calls, names, promises, and follow-up messages.
- If the seller cannot resolve it, check the warranty and contact the manufacturer. Review the written terms for who handles claims, possible shipping or labor costs, exclusions, and available remedies. Keep proof of your communications.
- Check your local consumer authority if needed. A store policy or manufacturer warranty may not describe all rights available where you live. The applicable rules depend on your location.
How to handle a new laptop dead pixel
Do not assume that one dead pixel automatically qualifies for a replacement or that a particular pixel count applies to every laptop. Policies can differ by model and region. LG’s US support page says its defective-pixel policy varies by model; consult the policy for your exact device and the seller’s deadline: LG’s defective-pixel policy information.

GIGABYTE’s US laptop policy is one example of a manufacturer-specific rule: it describes a limited 30-day defective-pixel warranty period. That is not a general standard and should not be applied to another brand or region. Check the exact product terms: GIGABYTE laptop warranty policy.

How to handle a laptop battery or other hardware fault
Describe the behavior you can observe—such as failure to charge, an unexpected shutdown, or an error message—rather than diagnosing the cause. Check the laptop’s written warranty and any separate battery terms. Coverage, the claim process, and possible costs vary. For example, GIGABYTE’s US laptop page lists one year of limited warranty coverage for the battery shipped with its laptop; that term does not establish coverage for other brands or regions. Read the applicable GIGABYTE laptop warranty terms.
For a complaint to a business, the FTC recommends including the product name and model or serial number, transaction details, a description of the problem, the resolution requested, and copies of supporting documents. Its sample complaint letter guidance can help organize a written account. Keep the originals of receipts and warranty documents.

Choosing between a refund, exchange, and repair
These are practical factors for comparing options, not a promise that every buyer is entitled to each remedy. Ask what the seller, written warranty, and local law actually provide.
- Time to a working laptop: Ask how soon each option could put a usable computer in your hands.
- What you will receive: Clarify whether an exchange is for a new unit or another condition, and whether a repair addresses the reported fault.
- Service logistics: Check shipping, repair turnaround, and how long you will be without the laptop.
- Your data: Consider any backup or transfer work before handing over a device for service.
- Terms and cost: Confirm the proposed remedy, any charges, and whether the seller or manufacturer is handling the claim.
Consumer rights depend on where you bought the laptop
In the United States, the FTC explains that implied warranties may apply, with rules varying by state; a manufacturer’s written warranty is not necessarily the only relevant route. If the seller or manufacturer does not respond appropriately, the FTC points US consumers to their state consumer protection office or attorney general. See the FTC’s warranty guidance and steps for resolving a problem with a business.

In other countries, consult the relevant official consumer agency; rules from one jurisdiction should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
