If your requested Michigan absentee ballot has not arrived, check its status at Michigan’s ballot tracker, then contact your city or township clerk. The clerk can confirm whether your application was processed and the ballot mailed, check the address on file, and explain whether you can get a replacement or vote in person. Act promptly: the available options and deadlines depend on your situation and how close it is to Election Day.
Check the ballot tracker and your registration details
Use the state’s online voter information and ballot tracker to look up your record. The state says you can search using your name, birth month and year, and ZIP code, or use your driver’s license number. In the “Absentee ballot” section, check whether the clerk has mailed the ballot and whether a returned ballot has been received.

If the ballot has not arrived, check that your voter registration information and mailing address are current. If the tracker does not answer your question, or the listed status seems wrong, contact your local city or township clerk directly.
Ask your local clerk what happened and what you can do
Find your clerk through Michigan.gov/Vote. Ask whether the clerk received and approved your absentee ballot application, when the ballot was mailed, and which mailing address was used. If a ballot was issued but never reached you, explain that clearly and ask about the replacement process and any deadline that applies.

Michigan guidance says a voter who never received a requested ballot can ask the clerk to spoil the original ballot and issue a replacement. The replacement is handled by the local clerk. Do not assume it will arrive by mail in time if Election Day is near; ask the clerk which options remain and what action you must take.
Know which deadline applies to your situation
Michigan publishes different cutoff times for different procedures. Its first-time voter guidance says a written, signed request to spoil an unsubmitted ballot must be received in person by the clerk by 4 p.m. on the Monday before Election Day. Separately, the state’s general absentee-voting information says a currently registered voter may submit an in-person absentee application at the clerk’s office until 4 p.m. the day before Election Day.

Those are not interchangeable deadlines: one concerns a request to spoil an unsubmitted ballot, while the other concerns an in-person absentee application. Tell the clerk your circumstances and confirm which procedure applies to you, including any requirements based on your registration or address status. If time is short, contact the clerk immediately rather than relying on mail delivery.

Consider an in-person option if mail is too uncertain
Michigan offers in-person absentee voting at a clerk’s office and in-person voting options. Which route is available, and the deadline for using it, can depend on your registration or address status and the election. Confirm the right location, required steps, and cutoff with your local clerk before going—especially close to Election Day.

If the ballot arrives, return it early enough to count
For most voters, an absentee ballot must reach the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day to count. Michigan advises mailing a completed ballot at least two weeks before Election Day to reduce the risk of postal delay. If your ballot arrives later than that, ask your clerk about an eligible way to return it in time. Military and overseas voters have a separate postmark and receipt rule and should use Michigan’s specialized guidance.
