If your iPhone has no service, first try reconnecting it, then check for software or carrier-settings updates and confirm that the correct SIM or eSIM line is enabled. “No Service” or “Searching” means the phone is not connected to a cellular network. “SOS” or “SOS only” means it cannot connect to its own carrier, even though emergency calls through other networks may remain possible in Australia, Canada, and the United States.
What “No Service,” “Searching,” and “SOS” mean
Apple defines “No Service” and “Searching” as a state in which the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. “SOS” or “SOS only” indicates that it is not connected to its own carrier network; it does not mean ordinary cellular service is working. Apple says emergency calls through other networks may still be possible in Australia, Canada, and the United States. Availability depends on location and network conditions.

Use the checks below in order. A reconnect or restart can help when a network is available, but cannot fix an outage, account restriction, or missing line provisioning.

Try a quick reconnect and restart
- Open Control Center or Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Wait at least 15 seconds, then turn Airplane Mode off.
- Restart the iPhone and check whether it reconnects.
Apple recommends this Airplane Mode interval as a troubleshooting step; it is not a guarantee of recovery. If there is no available network or the account has a problem, continue to the checks below.

Install available iOS and carrier settings updates
- Update iOS: Connect to Wi-Fi if needed, then open Settings > General > Software Update and install an update offered for the device.
- Check carrier settings: With Wi-Fi available, open Settings > General > About and wait for a prompt to install carrier settings, if one appears. Apple notes that a newly inserted SIM may require updated carrier settings. The carrier settings version may appear beside the carrier label under eSIM.
Menu wording can vary with region and software version; follow the current labels on the iPhone.
Check the active SIM or eSIM line
For Dual SIM or eSIM
Open Settings > Cellular, tap the line you intend to use, and confirm that the line is turned on. If the expected line is missing, contact the carrier about eSIM provisioning or insert the relevant physical SIM. Do not delete an eSIM as a routine troubleshooting step; ask the carrier what setup or recovery action is appropriate.

| Possible cause | Who can verify or address it | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage gap or carrier outage | Carrier | Ask about coverage and outages at your current location. |
| Inactive account, wrong plan, or blocked device | Carrier | Ask it to verify account standing, plan, and device eligibility. |
| Disabled or missing cellular line | You in Settings; carrier if provisioning is needed | Check the intended line and contact the carrier if it is absent. |
| Physical SIM not seated or damaged | You can reseat it; carrier handles replacement | Remove and reinsert it; ask about replacement if damaged or ill-fitting. |
| Missing carrier settings or outdated iOS | You, using Wi-Fi if needed | Check Settings > General > About and Settings > General > Software Update. |
| Suspected hardware issue after account and network checks | Apple or a service provider | Arrange service if the carrier rules out account and network causes. |
When to arrange device service
If the carrier confirms that the account and network are not the cause but service still fails, contact Apple or an authorized service provider about the device. No single status message identifies a specific hardware fault, so avoid assuming the antenna, modem, or SIM reader has failed without a device-specific diagnosis.
