What to Do If Your Electric Bill Suddenly Increases

A sudden electric bill increase may reflect higher usage, a changed rate or billing issue. Here’s how to compare bills and contact your utility.

Compare your current bill with recent bills before changing appliances or buying a monitor. Check kilowatt-hours (kWh), billing dates, meter-reading status, rates and new charges: a higher total can mean you used more electricity, paid a different rate, or both. If a reading or charge looks wrong, ask your utility to explain and verify it using contact details on the bill or its official website.

1. Compare the bill with recent months

Put the latest bill beside several recent ones and note the figures and labels shown on each. Focus on:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Electricity use: the total kWh billed. This measures energy consumed; a higher dollar amount does not by itself show that usage increased.
  • Billing period: the start and end dates, and the number of days covered. A longer billing period can mean more days of usage on the bill.
  • Meter reading: whether the bill identifies the reading as actual or estimated. If the status is shown and changed, ask the utility what that means for your account.
  • Rate or plan: the name of the plan and any rate details printed on the bill.
  • Line items: new, changed or unusually large charges, including fixed charges if listed.

Electricity charges are not always a simple multiplication of total kWh by one rate. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that charges may depend on how much electricity is used, when or in what season it is used, and—under some rate structures—peak demand, as well as fixed charges. Its rate-options guidance, dated May 13, 2020, is written for federal sites and businesses; use it as background and confirm which components apply to your residential account with your utility. DOE: Evaluating Your Utility Rate Options. DOE’s Better Buildings Solution Center also describes electricity billing and rate structures that can vary by usage, season or time of day. DOE: Understanding Your Utility Bills—Electricity.

2. If your kWh increased, look for changes in use

Think about what changed during the billing period rather than assuming one appliance is responsible. Heating and air conditioning can affect consumption, as can weather, changes in who is home, and other changes in electricity use. A device-level guess is not enough to establish the cause; start with the kWh comparison and the dates it covers.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

If higher consumption remains unexplained, consider asking the utility whether it offers conservation advice or arranging an energy audit. The Federal Trade Commission says an audit can help identify wasted energy and examine how well heating and cooling systems work. Availability and cost depend on the provider or program, so ask what is included and whether a fee applies. FTC: Getting Utility Services: Why Your Credit Matters.

3. Ask the utility to check a questionable bill

Contact the utility if the meter-reading status, billing dates, rate, usage or a charge does not make sense. Use the phone number printed on your bill or contact information on the company’s official website. Describe the specific item you want checked, and ask the representative to explain how it was calculated and verify the account details. DOE’s rate guidance recommends reviewing bills and contacting the utility representative about applicable options: DOE: Evaluating Your Utility Rate Options.

For billing questions, do not trust an unexpected caller’s number or instructions to pay immediately. The FTC warns that scammers impersonate utility companies and advises customers to contact the utility using its own published information. FTC: Scammers Pretend To Be Your Utility Company.

4. If the bill appears accurate, review your rate options

Ask which rate plan currently applies, whether the utility changed your rate or time-of-use schedule, and whether other plans are available. Some rates vary by time or season, so a shift in when electricity is used can matter even if total kWh changes little. Compare options against your household’s actual usage pattern, and ask the utility for current terms and any eligibility conditions. Plans and choices differ by utility and location; do not assume a rate described in general guidance is offered to your home.

5. Escalate locally if the utility does not resolve it

Complaint procedures, deadlines and regulators vary by jurisdiction. If the utility cannot resolve a billing dispute, look up the regulator or consumer office responsible for utility complaints in your state or locality, then follow its current instructions. Without knowing where you live, there is no single deadline or escalation route that applies to every customer.

Why a gadget is not the first step

A plug-in electricity monitor or energy-measuring smart plug can measure only compatible plug-in loads. It will not explain a rate or billing-period change, fixed charges, or electricity use from all hardwired equipment. For a sudden bill increase, comparing bills and asking the utility to verify the relevant details addresses more of the possible causes.
