The right next step depends on whether this is an ordinary profile screenshot, personal information, an intimate image, or a threat.
In the United States, nonconsensual intimate imagery has a specific federal takedown route: under the Take It Down Act, effective May 19, 2026, covered platforms must remove qualifying imagery and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. That process does not guarantee removal of ordinary profile screenshots, rumors, or every repost.

First determine what went viral
Do not treat every unwanted post as the same problem. The content type, hosting service, urgency, and age of the person depicted affect which reporting route may apply.

Also note where the material is hosted: a dating app, social network, image or video service, or private message. The service displaying the material is usually the place to start a report, and its reporting options can differ depending on whether you have an account.

If the same material appears in more than one place, treat each hosting service as a separate reporting destination. A report to the dating app may not address a screenshot reposted on a social network, and a platform’s response to one post does not establish that every copy has been removed. Keep a private list of locations and report each through its current process.
What to do first: a practical response sequence
1. Preserve evidence privately
Record the post’s URL, account name, date and time, screenshots, and any related messages. Keep this record somewhere secure. Do not repost the material publicly to prove that it exists; doing so can give it a wider audience. Documentation can help you explain a report, but it does not guarantee removal.
2. Report the material where it appears
Use the post or account’s report control, or the service’s help center. State what the content is and why it violates the service’s rules. If the post is an intimate image, make a clear removal request through the platform’s designated process rather than relying only on a general report category.

For ordinary profile screenshots and personal information, follow the host’s current procedures. Rules and menus vary, and there is no established universal takedown mechanism for every screenshot or identifying detail.
When you contact a service, be precise about the post or account you are reporting and keep a record of what you submitted. If the service offers different options for privacy, harassment, or intimate imagery, choose the one that fits the material. Platform rules and processes vary, so do not assume one category or form applies everywhere.

3. Reduce exposure without escalating the pile-on
Review privacy settings on the dating app and any connected social accounts. Remove unnecessary identifying details where appropriate, and limit replies or engagement with abusive users. Avoid arguing with people who are amplifying the post. The available guidance does not verify current, menu-by-menu controls for any particular dating app, so consult that service’s current help center.
4. Secure accounts linked to the profile
Protect the email account and social accounts connected to the dating profile. The Federal Trade Commission’s Online Privacy and Security hub links to guidance on strong passwords, two-factor authentication, recovering hacked accounts, and protecting personal information. If you suspect someone has accessed an account, use the service’s recovery process and secure the linked email account as well.
If someone shared an intimate image without consent
The Take It Down Act creates a defined process for qualifying nonconsensual intimate imagery on covered platforms in the United States. The Federal Trade Commission says the Act covers real images and digitally altered images, including AI-generated deepfakes. A covered platform must remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request.
Submit a platform removal request
- Identify the platform hosting the image and find its designated process for requesting removal of nonconsensual intimate imagery.
- Submit a clear request through that process, following the platform’s instructions. Save a copy of the request, its submission date, and any response.
- Allow the statutory 48-hour period after the covered platform receives a valid request. The requirement concerns qualifying intimate imagery and known identical copies; it is not a general deadline for all types of viral content.
The clock is tied to a covered platform receiving a valid request, not simply to the moment you first discover an image or make a general complaint. Follow the platform’s instructions carefully and retain the request details so you can track the response period.
The FTC’s consumer guidance stresses that platforms are the entities that can take down intimate photos and videos shared without consent. The law’s process should not be read as a guaranteed remedy for ordinary dating-profile screenshots, doxxing, rumors, or every repost.

Report a covered platform’s failure
If a covered platform has no request process, its process is broken, or it has not removed qualifying imagery within 48 hours of a valid request, report the platform to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. Keep the request details and the platform’s response, if any, with your private record. This FTC complaint route concerns a covered platform’s failure to meet the intimate-image process; it is not a general takedown form for every viral profile post.
The FTC’s May 2026 business guidance says violations may lead to enforcement that could result in civil penalties of $53,088 per violation. That is a potential platform-enforcement penalty, not compensation paid to the person depicted.
Use specialist services where they fit
- StopNCII.org is a free global tool the FTC points adults to for intimate-image spread.
- The FTC points minors to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s Take It Down service.
- For concerns involving a minor, the FTC also identifies NCMEC’s CyberTipline as a reporting resource.
These resources address intimate-image abuse; they are not universal removal tools for ordinary profile screenshots. If you are unsure which path fits, distinguish the kind of image and the person’s age before using a service.
If the post includes threats or extortion
If someone threatens to publish intimate imagery unless you pay, comply, or send more content, the FTC advises reporting the threat to local law enforcement and the FBI. Do not pay or send additional images. Cut off contact, block the person, and tell someone you trust. Keep threatening messages and account details as evidence, but do not forward or repost intimate imagery as a way to document it.
If the person depicted is a minor, use NCMEC’s CyberTipline and seek help from a trusted adult or appropriate authorities. If you believe there is an immediate danger to someone’s physical safety, contact local emergency services.

What the law does—and does not—promise
The Take It Down Act’s 48-hour requirement is specific: it concerns a valid request for qualifying nonconsensual intimate imagery and known identical copies on a covered platform. In March 2026, the FTC announced an action involving OkCupid and Match Group Americas. The agency described a proposed settlement that would prohibit misrepresentations about data handling and privacy controls.

- Where is it hosted? Report at the service displaying the material, using its current reporting or help-center process.
- Is there an urgent safety risk? Threats, extortion, and information that could expose someone to physical danger call for more urgent support than a general privacy complaint.
- Is the person depicted a minor? Use the appropriate NCMEC route and avoid redistributing the image.
- Is this a valid intimate-image request on a covered platform? Save the request details and track whether the platform acts within the 48-hour period.
