Treat an exposed crypto seed phrase as compromised. Create a new wallet with a newly generated recovery phrase on a trusted device, then move any remaining assets to it as soon as you can do so safely. Changing your old wallet’s app password or PIN does not protect a phrase that someone else may know.
What to do first
The recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase or Secret Recovery Phrase—can give someone control of the wallet accounts derived from it. If you entered it on a website or app, sent it to someone, or otherwise cannot rule out exposure, act as though those accounts are no longer secure. The exact screens and transfer steps vary by wallet, blockchain and asset type, so use the wallet provider’s official guidance. Reach it independently, such as by typing the provider’s known address, rather than following a link in an unsolicited message.

- Stop using a potentially compromised device. If the device, wallet app or browser may contain malware or a malicious extension, disconnect it from the internet and use a different trusted device. Do not enter the phrase again to “verify” it.
- Set up a genuinely new wallet. Generate a new phrase on a trusted, secure device. Do not import the exposed phrase, reuse an account derived from it, or assume that creating another account under the same phrase makes it safe.
- Protect the new phrase. Write it down and store it securely offline. Do not send it to anyone, enter it into a website, save it in a screenshot, notes app, email or cloud account, or disclose it to someone claiming to be support.
- Move remaining assets to the new wallet. Carefully check the destination address and the correct network for each transfer. Follow your wallet provider’s official procedure, especially if the old wallet behaves unexpectedly.
- Stop using the exposed phrase and its associated accounts. Once you have moved any remaining transferable funds, do not treat the old wallet as safe for future deposits or use.
Move funds carefully, especially if a device may be infected
Use a separate, trusted device for creating the new wallet and initiating transfers if the old one might be compromised. Check the receiving address on the device or wallet interface you trust, and make sure the asset is being sent over a network the receiving wallet supports. A transfer sent to the wrong address or network may not be recoverable.

In that situation, adding funds to the old wallet to pay transaction fees can simply give the attacker another opportunity. Do not send extra gas or other funds to the compromised wallet without wallet-specific official guidance. The safest sequence depends on the wallet, chain and assets involved.

A hardware wallet is one possible way to set up a future wallet with private keys kept offline, but buying one does not fix an exposed phrase. The urgent task remains creating a new wallet with a new phrase and moving the assets that are still there.
Phrase exposure and suspicious approvals are different problems
| What may have happened | What it means | Relevant action |
|---|---|---|
| The recovery phrase or private key was shared, entered into a site or app, or stored somewhere an attacker may access. | Someone may be able to control accounts derived from that phrase directly. | Create a new wallet with a new phrase and move remaining assets. Revoking an approval does not make the exposed phrase safe. |
| The phrase was not exposed, but the wallet approved a suspicious token or smart-contract transaction. | A contract may have permission to access particular tokens or assets, depending on the approval and chain. | Review and revoke suspicious approvals using the wallet’s or chain’s supported tools. Also check whether the device or phrase may have been compromised. |
Disconnect unknown dApps where your wallet supports it, but treat that as a separate cleanup step: disconnecting an app or revoking a contract permission does not take control away from someone who has the recovery phrase.

Secure linked accounts and check how the phrase may have leaked
A self-custodial wallet and a custodial exchange account are not the same thing. A seed phrase controls the wallet accounts it derives; it does not, by itself, describe every login or account you use elsewhere. If an exchange account, email account or other linked sign-in may also be affected, use a trusted device to change its password, enable two-factor authentication (2FA), and end unfamiliar sessions where those controls are available.
Consider whether the phrase could have been exposed through a phishing page, fake wallet app, malware, a malicious browser extension, or a screenshot, notes app, email or cloud backup. Use official provider channels to report suspicious activity. Never follow an unsolicited “support” message to a recovery page, and never share the phrase with a support agent.

What if the funds have already been transferred?
Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, dates, amounts, screenshots and relevant messages. Contact an exchange promptly through its official support channel if the funds appear to have reached an account on that platform; it may have limited options to flag or freeze that account. Also report the incident to relevant local authorities and follow the wallet provider’s official reporting guidance.
Do not count on a reversal or reimbursement. Ethereum.org’s “Scam help & reporting” guidance, last updated June 6, 2026, puts it plainly: “No one can reverse blockchain transactions.” Confirmed Ethereum transactions are final, and confirmed on-chain transfers generally cannot be undone. A self-custodial wallet provider cannot simply take control of or freeze a wallet because its phrase was exposed. An exchange may be able to act only in limited circumstances, such as when stolen funds reach an account on its platform; recovery is not assured.

Ignore recovery offers that ask for money or access
After a theft, fake investigators, support agents and “recovery experts” may contact you. Do not pay an upfront recovery fee, disclose your phrase or private key, or grant remote access to your device. Ethereum.org warns that fee-based recovery approaches are almost certainly a second scam, and a 2025 factsheet from the European Supervisory Authorities also warns about recovery-room fraud. Use only official provider and authority channels, reached independently.
