It should give the main reason for the denial or explain how to request the specific reasons. If the issuer used a credit report, the notice also identifies the reporting company and explains how to request a free copy within 60 days. Check that report for errors, then respond to the reason the issuer actually gave.
1. Read the denial notice and get the specific reason
Save the notice and check its date, the stated reasons, and any instructions for requesting a statement of reasons. Under the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s explanation of Regulation B, a creditor must give the principal reasons for adverse action or tell you how to request them. A generic explanation such as “you did not meet our internal standards” is not enough; the reasons must relate to factors the creditor actually considered or scored. Read Regulation B § 1002.9 and its official interpretation.

If the notice says you may request the reasons, follow its instructions within 60 days. Examples on official sample forms include limited credit experience, delinquent obligations, obligations that are high relative to income, and an inability to verify employment or income. These are examples only; the notice or issuer must tell you what applied to your application. The CFPB explains what to do after a credit application denial.

If the denial was based on a credit report, the adverse action notice names the consumer reporting company that supplied it. Use that notice to request your free report from the company within 60 days of receiving the notice. This is a report tied to the adverse action; it is not a promise that the issuer will reconsider or approve the application. See the CFPB’s instructions for getting a free credit report.
#1 Best Overall
Review the report for unfamiliar accounts, incorrect balances or payment history, outdated or incomplete information, and errors in your identifying details. Compare the report with your own records before deciding what to dispute.
3. Dispute report errors with the companies involved
If you find inaccurate information, dispute it with the credit reporting company and with the company that supplied the information, such as a lender or creditor. Keep copies of the denial notice, report, dispute, supporting documents, and responses. The CFPB says the reporting company must investigate and correct errors it finds. The CFPB describes how to challenge inaccurate report information.
A report dispute addresses the accuracy of information in the file; it does not by itself establish that the issuer’s decision was wrong under its credit standards. If the information is corrected, ask the issuer whether it will reconsider the application or whether you would need to apply again. Neither reconsideration nor a future approval is guaranteed.
4. Respond to the reason the issuer actually gave
Use the notice and any statement of reasons to identify the issue, rather than guessing from a credit score or applying again without new information. The next step depends on what the issuer says:
Rank #3
- Limited or thin credit history: Review the CFPB’s credit-building guidance and consider ways to establish a record of responsible credit use.
- Missed or delinquent payments: Check the listed accounts and payment history against your records. Dispute inaccuracies; if the information is accurate, focus on bringing obligations current and maintaining on-time payments.
- Obligations high relative to income: Verify the balances and income information considered. Correct any reporting or application error, and consider whether reducing outstanding obligations is realistic before applying again.
- Employment or income could not be verified: Ask the issuer which information could not be confirmed and what documentation, if any, it accepts. Correct incomplete or inaccurate application details.
These steps address possible issues but cannot guarantee a different decision. The issuer still applies its credit standards, and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act does not guarantee approval.

A denial alone does not prove discrimination. But the CFPB identifies warning signs that may merit attention, including being denied without a reason or an explanation of how to learn the reason, being discouraged from applying, or being treated differently from other applicants. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibits specified forms of discrimination in credit decisions; it does not require lenders to approve every application. The CFPB explains information card issuers may not use as a basis for decisions.

If the circumstances raise a concern, review the CFPB’s fair-lending guidance and complaint options. Keep the notice and records of relevant communications so you can describe what happened clearly.
