Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a password or personal detail appears in a leak-site listing, treat it as a warning to secure your accounts—not proof that anyone has accessed them or committed identity theft. Verify the incident through the affected organization’s official website or app, change exposed and reused passwords, and take identity-protection steps that match the data involved.
First, verify what was exposed
Go directly to the affected service using a bookmark or an address you type yourself. Read its incident notice, or contact support through its official app or website, to find out which account and types of data may be involved. Do not use a link in an unexpected breach or “recovery” message, and do not enter your credentials on a leak-site page.

A listing alone does not establish that the information is accurate, current, or that someone used it. There is no universally conclusive way to validate every leak-site listing. The affected organization’s notice and official support channel are the best places to confirm what it knows about a specific incident. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also provides data-breach resources.
Secure accounts that use the exposed credentials
- Change the exposed password. Sign in through the service’s official website or app and choose a new, unique password. The FBI advises using random password sequences and enabling multi-factor authentication where possible in its identity-theft guidance.
- Change reused or similar passwords elsewhere. Prioritize important accounts and the email account used to reset other passwords. A password that is merely varied slightly from the exposed one may still be guessable.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) where available. MFA adds a second verification step; the service may support an authenticator app, a security key, or another method. A USB security key is one option, not a requirement. Check that your important services support the method and that you have a way to recover access if you lose the device. CISA’s MFA overview is marked archived: More than a Password.
- If the account may already be compromised, review and end access. Check recent activity, sign out other devices or active sessions, and make sure the recovery email addresses and phone numbers belong to you. The FTC’s instructions for recovering a hacked email or social media account cover these steps.
Match the next steps to the exposed data
Email account access
Secure the mailbox early: it may receive password-reset messages for other services. After regaining control, review its recovery details and sign out other devices. If you cannot sign in, use the provider’s official account-recovery process rather than a link or phone number from an unsolicited message.

Social media account access
Change the password, review recent activity and recovery details, and end unfamiliar sessions. If the account may have sent messages in your name, alert contacts through a trusted channel so they can avoid suspicious links or requests.
Social Security number or other identity data
In the United States, use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery steps and follow the guidance for the type of information exposed. The FTC recommends ordering free credit reports and looking for accounts you do not recognize when your Social Security number was exposed. You can also consider a credit freeze or fraud alert. If you find actual misuse, report it and follow the recovery plan.

Payment card or bank details
If you see suspicious activity, contact the card issuer or financial institution using the number on your card or its official app or website. Follow that institution’s instructions; the right response can depend on the payment method and what happened.
Be alert for breach-related impersonation
Someone who knows about a real breach can make a fraudulent call, text, or email sound convincing. Reach the organization independently through its official site or app instead of following a message link. Do not give an unsolicited contact your password, banking credentials, or one-time verification code. The FBI says official FBI correspondence will never request passwords or banking credentials; see its identity-theft resources.

Use support offered by the affected organization
If the organization offers affected people a free service—such as credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance—the FTC recommends taking advantage of it. Confirm eligibility and enrollment through the organization’s official channel, and check the notice for the service’s scope, duration, and enrollment deadline. Terms vary by incident. The FTC’s What To Do After a Data Breach guidance explains consumer steps and company-offered services.
Do not assume a paid monitoring service is necessary for every incident, or that monitoring prevents identity theft. Use the support actually offered for your incident and take the account or credit steps relevant to the exposed information.

What you can do about the leak-site listing
Do not download, share, or investigate stolen data. You also should not assume you can erase every copy from third-party leak sites. The FTC’s business guidance tells organizations to remove improperly posted information from their own websites and notes that search engines may retain cached information for a period; it does not establish a universal consumer takedown route for third-party leak sites. If your information appears on a legitimate service, use that service’s official reporting channel. In the meantime, focus on securing accounts and watching for misuse. See the FTC’s Data Breach Response: A Guide for Business for the distinction between removing information from a company’s own site and cached copies.
