What to Do If Your Child Makes a Threat or Posts a Hoax Online

Treat an online threat as serious: contact emergency services if danger may be immediate, report it to the school and authorities, and do not repost it.

If your child posts or sends a threat—especially one involving a school—treat it as serious, even if they say it was a joke. If anyone may be in immediate danger in the United States, call 911. Report the post promptly to local law enforcement and the school, preserve the information for authorities, and do not forward or repost it.

What to do first

  1. Address immediate danger. If someone may be at immediate risk in the United States, call 911. The FBI’s guidance for families and its August 27, 2026 Chicago advisory say threats should be reported to authorities. The advisory also identifies local law enforcement and FBI tip channels as reporting options.
  2. Notify the school promptly. Use its official reporting channel and give administrators factual details. Ask who is coordinating the response, then follow the school’s official instructions. Federal Education and Justice Department guidance on swatting threats urges schools to prioritize safety, coordinate with law enforcement, and use established emergency communications while assessing a threat.
  3. Preserve the post and its context. Keep a screenshot or copy with available details such as the sender, date, and time. Do not delete, forward, or repost the threat while authorities investigate. The FBI advises against sharing or forwarding threats; a CISA social-media threat guidance page search extract also advises preserving electronic evidence. Confirm evidence-handling instructions with investigators.
  4. Avoid public speculation. Do not name a supposed hoax, circulate screenshots, or repeat unverified claims. Federal school guidance promotes “Report, Don’t Repost.” UK Department for Education guidance on harmful online challenges and hoaxes similarly recommends fact-checking and proportionate communication to limit misinformation and distress.
  5. Talk with your child when immediate safety steps are underway. Ask what happened and what they were feeling. Listen for stress, conflict, or a need for help, and explain that a threat can have serious consequences even if intended as a joke. The FBI recommends discussing responsible social-media use, consequences, and healthier ways to handle stress. Seek appropriate school or mental-health support if your child appears distressed or at risk; do not diagnose them from the post.

Who should assess whether the threat is credible?

Your role is to report what you know and cooperate. School officials and law enforcement assess credibility and decide what safety measures are needed. Federal guidance recommends that schools prepare notification procedures, coordinate with law enforcement, and take safety steps before a threat is confirmed as real or a hoax. That guidance is directed to educational institutions and is not legally binding.

A school may use a threat-assessment team to identify, evaluate, and address threats to school security. The Department of Education says possible members include principals, counselors, school law-enforcement personnel, outside mental-health professionals, and local law enforcement. The team’s membership and process can vary by school.

Should you call the school or police?

Depending on the situation, report to both. Call 911 if danger may be immediate in the United States; otherwise, contact local law enforcement through its appropriate channel and notify the school promptly if the threat concerns students, staff, or campus. The FBI’s 2026 advisory also points to FBI tip channels. Reporting routes and emergency numbers vary by location, so follow local instructions.

Should you delete the post?

Do not delete or circulate it as a first response. Preserve the post and surrounding details for authorities, and ask investigators how they want the evidence handled. Keep it out of group chats and public feeds: forwarding can amplify fear and misinformation, and may complicate the response.

What consequences could your child face?

Do not assume authorities or the school will dismiss a threat as a prank, and do not predict a particular punishment. The FBI says certain threats sent through interstate communications can be federal crimes carrying a maximum of five years in federal prison; state or local charges may also apply. That statutory maximum is not a prediction about an individual child’s case. The FBI’s August 2026 Chicago advisory says students may face school discipline, arrest, or imprisonment regardless of claimed intent. Actual outcomes depend on the facts, the child’s age, the jurisdiction, and applicable law. For advice about a specific case, consult a qualified local lawyer.

How to talk about it without escalating the situation

Once safety and reporting steps are underway, keep the conversation calm and focused on understanding what happened. Ask what the child meant, who saw or received the message, and whether anyone is being targeted or is in danger. Avoid treating the conversation as a substitute for reporting or letting a claim that it was a joke decide whether the threat is credible.

Set a clear boundary: threats can alarm people and trigger serious responses, even when the person who posted them says they did not mean them. Discuss responsible online behavior and safer ways to seek help when overwhelmed. If there are signs of distress or risk, involve suitable school or mental-health professionals.
