Exact emergency numbers, motorway procedures, warning-device rules and roadside laws depend on the country, road and vehicle. The instructions below distinguish UK motorway guidance from U.S. preparation advice; use the road authority’s directions where you are.

1. Control the car and get out of the traffic lane
A sudden loss of power, puncture, overheating or warning light can be frightening, but abrupt steering or braking can cause a second crash. Keep both hands available, slow smoothly and use whatever control remains to reach a safe stopping place. The UK Highway Code’s core advice is to get the vehicle off the road if possible; that principle is useful everywhere, but the exact safe place differs by roadway.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Stay calm and signal. Use your indicators while moving toward a shoulder, emergency refuge area, lay-by, exit or nearby side road. Do not continue driving merely to reach a preferred destination if the vehicle is unsafe, smoking, losing braking or steering control, or showing signs of fire.
- Stop as far from moving traffic as you safely can. A narrow shoulder, blind bend, bridge or crest may still expose you to traffic. If reaching a safer position would require a risky crossing or sudden maneuver, stop where you are and call for emergency help.
- Secure the vehicle. Select park (or the appropriate gear), apply the parking brake and switch off the engine if it is safe. Do not open the bonnet or begin diagnosis while the vehicle is exposed to traffic.
For country-specific breakdown procedures, see the UK Department for Transport’s Highway Code breakdown guidance.

2. Make the scene visible without putting yourself in danger
Switch on hazard lights when the disabled vehicle obstructs traffic or presents a hazard, consistent with local law. At night or in poor visibility, keep the vehicle’s lighting on if that helps approaching drivers see it. Visibility is not a reason to stand in the roadway, wave at traffic or inspect the car from the traffic side.
- Never stand between your vehicle and approaching traffic.
- Do not send passengers, children or pets into a live lane or across a motorway.
- Do not attempt a roadside repair where a passing vehicle could strike you.
- Watch for traffic and debris even after you have stopped.
Warning-device rules vary. Under the UK Highway Code, drivers must not place or retrieve a warning triangle on a motorway. On other UK roads, the Code’s 45-metre (147-foot) triangle distance applies only to the specific non-motorway instruction; it is not a motorway rule. Follow your own road authority’s requirements rather than applying that distance internationally.
3. Decide whether occupants should remain in the car
There is no universal “always stay” or “always get out” rule. The right choice depends on the road, traffic speed, barriers, weather, the vehicle’s position and instructions from emergency or road authorities.

For the UK motorway situation covered by the Highway Code, occupants should remain in the vehicle with seat belts fastened in the applicable scenario. Where it is possible and directed to do so safely, leave through the side away from traffic, get behind a safety barrier and stay well away from the vehicle and carriageway. Do not return to the vehicle to retrieve belongings unless authorities tell you it is safe. Read the complete Highway Code instructions for the precise road layout and circumstances.

Other roads and jurisdictions
On a quiet road with a wide, protected shoulder, leaving the vehicle may reduce exposure to a rear-end collision. On a narrow shoulder, a blind curve, a high-speed road or any place where stepping out would put you in traffic, remaining belted inside may be safer until responders arrive. Keep doors locked if appropriate, monitor approaching traffic and follow the emergency operator’s directions. These conditional choices are not a substitute for local rules.
4. Call the right kind of help
Choose help based on immediate danger, not on whether you know what failed.
| Situation | Who to contact | What to tell them |
|---|---|---|
| Injury, fire, collision risk, a person in danger, or a vehicle stopped in a live lane | Your local emergency number or the vehicle’s emergency SOS system | Exact location, direction, hazards, injuries and whether traffic is blocked |
| Vehicle safely off the road with no immediate threat | Your breakdown-recovery or roadside-assistance provider | Location, vehicle details, fault symptoms and access restrictions |
National Highways distinguishes emergency eCall from breakdown bCall or telephone contact. In the UK material, eCall is for an emergency requiring police, fire or ambulance; bCall or a recovery provider is for a non-emergency breakdown after you are safe. The Highway Code’s motorway procedure identifies 999 for the UK emergency call. Do not treat 999 as a worldwide number. Use the emergency number for the country where you are driving. See National Highways eCall SOS guidance.
If you are unsure whether the situation is an emergency, explain the vehicle’s position and hazards to the operator. A car stopped in a live lane is dangerous even if nobody is injured; say that immediately.

5. Give a location responders can actually find
A vague “I’m on the highway” can delay help. Before calling, look for information without leaving the safe position.
- Road or route: state the road name or number and, if known, the carriageway or lane.
- Direction: give the direction of travel, such as northbound or toward a named city.
- Reference point: provide the nearest exit, junction, service area, landmark or cross street.
- Motorway marker: in the UK, read the numbers and letters on the nearest marker post or driver location sign exactly as shown in the Highway Code guidance.
- Vehicle description: give colour, make, body type and registration if you can do so safely.
- Hazards: report a live-lane obstruction, smoke, fire, spilled fluids, poor visibility, passengers outside the vehicle or approaching traffic.
Keep your phone charged and remain available for a return call. If the vehicle has a built-in location or SOS function, confirm the location verbally as well; electronic location can be incomplete or inaccurate.
6. Wait without creating a second emergency
Once help is on the way, concentrate on exposure to traffic, weather and other hazards rather than diagnosing the fault.

7. What to do on a highway or motorway
When the car reaches a shoulder or refuge
Stop fully within the protected area if possible, keep the vehicle visible and make the emergency-versus-recovery call described above. A shoulder is not a guaranteed safe zone: high-speed traffic can drift onto it, and some roads have no physical separation. Do not assume that a warning triangle, flare or reflective device is legal or safe to deploy there.
When the car stops in a live lane
Turn on hazard lights, keep occupants restrained unless an authority gives a safer evacuation instruction, and call the local emergency service immediately. State that the vehicle is in a live lane and give the direction, lane and nearest marker or junction. Do not attempt to push the car, cross lanes or retrieve equipment yourself.
When traffic is passing close by
Remain alert for turbulence, debris and vehicles that fail to move over. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says all 50 states require drivers to move over and slow down for emergency vehicles with flashing lights. The NHTSA page current when retrieved in 2026 summarizes additional flashing- or hazard-light vehicles in 19 states and Washington, DC; those counts and the categories covered can change, so check the current law in the state where you are driving. See NHTSA’s Move Over page.
8. Build a roadside kit before the next trip
A kit helps you communicate, stay visible and manage a long wait; it does not make an exposed repair safe. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says, “Even a well-maintained vehicle can break down, so it’s recommended to put together an emergency roadside kit to carry with you.” Its Summer Driving & Road Trip Tips list includes:

Check warning devices against local restrictions and store equipment so it can be reached without stepping into traffic. Use a jack, cables or tools only when the vehicle is in a genuinely protected place and the operator or road authority says it is safe.
9. Reduce the chance of a breakdown
Preparation cannot eliminate failures, but it can make them easier to handle. NHTSA recommends checking tyres for damage at least monthly and before long trips, and checking weather, road conditions and traffic before setting out. Inspect tread and pressure according to the vehicle maker’s specifications, confirm that lights work and keep fuel or battery charge adequate for the planned route. A maintained car can still fail, which is why the communication, lighting, food and medical items in the kit matter.
Winter travel
For winter journeys, carry a charged phone and charger, food, water, medicines, blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables and warning devices. NHTSA’s Winter Weather Driving Tips provide additional instructions for a stalled vehicle in wintry conditions. Follow those official directions rather than improvising a repair or exposing yourself to cold, drifting snow or exhaust-related hazards.

Quick Recap
10. Common mistakes to avoid
- Diagnosing before securing people: a mechanical explanation is less urgent than traffic exposure.
- Walking for help: leave the vehicle only under safe, local-authority guidance.
- Using a motorway warning triangle: the UK Highway Code prohibits placing or retrieving one on a motorway.
- Assuming every road has a shoulder: describe the actual position to emergency dispatch.
- Calling recovery for a live-lane emergency: request emergency services first, then recovery when directed.
- Relying on a phone map alone: read physical marker posts, signs and landmarks when available.
- Applying another country’s rule: emergency numbers, evacuation advice, warning devices and move-over laws are jurisdiction-specific.
11. A compact decision checklist
- Can you steer safely out of the travel lane? If yes, move to the nearest protected place; if no, stop, use hazards and call emergency services.
- Is anyone injured, is there fire or immediate danger, or is the vehicle in a live lane? Use the local emergency number or vehicle SOS.
- Are you safely off the road with no immediate threat? Contact breakdown recovery or roadside assistance.
- Can you identify the road, direction, nearest exit or marker, vehicle and hazards? Give all of it to the responder.
- Should occupants stay belted inside or move behind a barrier? Follow the road authority’s instructions for that road and situation.
