If you think your bank account has been compromised, contact your bank or credit union immediately through its official app or website, or call the number on your card or a recent statement. Ask for the fraud department, report every transaction you did not authorize, and have the institution secure your access. Do not follow an unexpected caller’s instructions to move money or share a verification code.
This is U.S. consumer guidance. A “compromised bank account” could mean stolen online-banking credentials, a debit-card theft, an unauthorized electronic transfer, or a paper check. The right protections and deadlines depend on how the transaction was made and what information or access was lost.

What to do first
- Contact your bank independently. Use the bank’s official app or website, the phone number printed on your card, or a number on a recent statement. Ask for the fraud department. Do not use a number or link supplied in an unexpected call, text, or email.
- Report each transaction you did not authorize. Ask the bank to open a dispute or error case and give you its case number. Ask it to secure your account, stop further transactions where possible, and explain how to reset your credentials safely.
- Block or replace exposed payment access. If your debit card, card number, PIN, or security code may be compromised, ask which card or access device must be blocked and replaced. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises cancelling and replacing a debit card after a thief takes money by debit; consider changing the PIN as well.
- Check for other suspicious activity. Review recent transactions and statements, including small or unfamiliar charges. Report anything you did not authorize; suspicious card charges can show up months after card information was stolen.
- Keep a record. Note when you contacted the bank, who you spoke with, your case number, and what the bank asked you to do. Save messages and statements related to the incident.
Identify what was compromised
The transaction type helps determine which reporting rules may apply. Tell the bank whether the activity involved a debit card or electronic transfer, an electronic check conversion, or a paper check. Also explain whether someone lost or stole your card or PIN, used stolen online credentials, or obtained personal information that could affect other accounts.
| Incident type | What to ask the bank | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card or other electronic fund transfer (EFT) | Is this being handled as an unauthorized EFT, and what access should be blocked? | Federal EFT protections and reporting timelines may apply. |
| Check processed electronically | Was this check converted into an electronic transfer? | Federal EFT protections may apply if it was processed electronically. |
| Paper check not processed electronically | What steps apply to this check and my account? | State law may govern; EFT deadlines should not automatically be applied to a non-electronic check. |
| Personal information or identity details exposed | Should affected accounts be closed or replaced, and what additional safeguards are appropriate? | The incident may reach beyond a single bank login or card. |
Report an unauthorized electronic transfer promptly
For many unauthorized electronic fund transfers, including many debit-card transactions, CFPB guidance says to notify your bank or credit union as soon as possible. Reporting time can affect liability, so do not wait to see whether another transaction appears.

- LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.
- If your debit card or PIN/security code was lost or stolen, a two-business-day reporting period can affect your liability.
- If an unauthorized EFT appears on a periodic statement, you generally must report it within 60 days after the statement is sent to avoid liability for subsequent transfers.
These are general rules, not a reason to delay or a guarantee about how a particular case will be decided. The facts and applicable rules matter. A transfer can still qualify as unauthorized when a fraudster used credentials obtained through hacking or phishing. CFPB guidance also says fraudulently induced sharing of credentials may fall within the unauthorized-transfer definition; do not assume that being tricked into sharing a code automatically ends the bank’s duty to investigate.
What happens after you dispute an EFT
CFPB consumer guidance reviewed August 28, 2026, describes these general investigation and correction timelines for EFT errors. Exceptions apply, and a temporary credit is not the same as a final decision.

Contact the bank quickly if someone altered, forged, or used a check without your authorization. Ask whether it was processed electronically. Protect other accounts and your credit if identity theft is involved
If personal information was exposed or the incident suggests identity theft beyond one card or account, consider closing affected accounts, contacting the financial institutions involved, and reporting the theft at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC site can provide an Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan. CFPB also identifies fraud alerts and security freezes as options for protecting your credit history. These steps are for broader identity-theft concerns, not requirements for every isolated card compromise.
Do not let a follow-up scam make things worse
A scammer may use a real breach or account alert to make an urgent demand seem credible. Verify any unexpected claim by contacting the bank through its official app or website, or by calling the number on your statement or card. Do not share account information or verification codes, withdraw cash, buy gold, or grant remote access to your device because an unsolicited caller says your account is at risk. If someone tells you to move money to a “safe account,” end the conversation and contact your bank independently.
