Check its Android security patch date, Google Play system update status, and available software updates; then verify the manufacturer’s or carrier’s schedule. If support has ended, keep protections enabled while you plan to move sensitive accounts and everyday use to a supported phone. App scans and safe habits help, but they cannot replace missing Android security patches.
Check your phone’s update status
- Find the patch dates: Open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Android version. Note the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number. Google says these details are available in Settings: Android version and update information.
- Check for updates: In Settings, open the system software update screen—often Settings > System > Software updates—and check for available updates. Names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer. Google notes that most system updates and security patches install automatically, but users can check manually; older devices may not support newer Android versions. Google’s update instructions describe the process.
- Record what you see: A recent Google Play system update is useful, but it does not prove that the manufacturer is still providing Android security patches. These are separate update layers.
Do not decide support has ended based only on the phone’s age, Android version, or the absence of an update notification. Google says schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier.

Confirm whether updates have ended for your exact model
Search the manufacturer’s official support or security-update page for the exact model and, where relevant, its regional or carrier variant. Look for a stated security-update end date and update frequency. If the schedule is unclear, ask the manufacturer or carrier directly. A phone bought recently may still have a different support schedule from another model, and carriers can affect timing.
Consumer guidance from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has called for clearer disclosure of how long devices will receive security updates and notice when support is ending. That is a reason to seek a published commitment, not a way to infer one for a particular phone: FTC statement on update-support disclosures.

What to do if support has ended
Plan to replace the phone for sensitive use
Once an Android device reaches end of life, it no longer receives security updates. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises replacing an end-of-life Android device to maintain security standards: NCSC guidance on keeping devices and data safe. Prioritize moving banking, work, primary email, password-manager, and other sensitive accounts to a phone that still receives security updates. There is no reliable general percentage for the likelihood that a particular unsupported phone will be compromised; risk depends on the device, its software, how it is used, and the threats it faces.
Keep using protections that are still available
- Install every official system update still offered for the phone.
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled and review its scan results. Google says Play Protect scans apps from any download source, with daily and on-demand scans: Google Play Protect information.
- Remove apps you no longer use and restrict permissions an app does not need. CISA recommends using Play Protect and reviewing or restricting app permissions in its Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance.
- Avoid installing apps from unknown sources, and be cautious with links, attachments, and requests for sensitive information.
These steps can reduce some app and account risks; they do not patch vulnerabilities in Android that the manufacturer no longer fixes.

If the phone is rooted or otherwise modified
Google warns that modified Android versions do not receive automatic security updates from Google and may lose protections. If you continue using a modified phone, move important accounts and sensitive data to a device running unmodified Android. Google’s guidance explains the risks and recommended steps: Check and update your Android version.
A custom ROM is not a universal fix. Whether one exists, is maintained, can be safely installed, and supports a particular model depends on that exact device. Do not treat installing one as a simple substitute for manufacturer support.

How to choose a supported replacement
Choose by the support commitment first, then check whether the phone works for your carrier, region, budget, accessibility needs, and required features. Confirm the commitment for the exact model and variant before buying; schedules and availability can change.

For stronger mobile-communications security, CISA’s guidance dated December 18, 2024 recommends prioritizing devices with security updates at least monthly and commitments for at least five years. These are agency recommendations, not a universal consumer requirement or a guarantee that a particular phone meets them: CISA guidance.
