If you suspect malware, do not sign in to banking, email, or other sensitive accounts on that Mac until you have followed trusted malware guidance. Turning off a permission limits future access through that permission; it cannot retrieve information the app may already have copied or sent.
First, distinguish a suspicious app from a possibly infected Mac
An unexpected permission request or unfamiliar app is a reason to investigate, not proof that data was stolen. The app, macOS version, permissions, and evidence of transmission all matter; the information available here cannot establish whether a particular app accessed, retained, or disclosed anything.

If you suspect malware, stop entering passwords or other sensitive information on that Mac while you assess it. The FTC advises people who suspect malware to stop logging in to online accounts from the affected device, update security software, scan for and remove identified malware, and then change passwords and enable two-factor authentication. Use a separate trusted device for account changes.

- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security. Panel names and layout may vary by macOS version.
- Inspect Files & Folders for access to locations such as Desktop, Downloads, and Documents. Review relevant categories for the app, including Camera, Contacts, Microphone, Photos, and Reminders.
- Check capabilities that can expose activity or enable control, such as Input Monitoring, Screen Recording, Accessibility, and Automation.
- Turn off access the app does not need. If you are unsure why it needs a permission, consult the app developer through a contact channel you trust before granting it again.
Apple documents these controls as ways to manage app access. Revoking permission is forward-looking: it does not show what the app did before you turned access off, nor does it retrieve files or credentials that may already have been copied or transmitted. A permission by itself also does not prove malicious behavior; some legitimate features require access.

Check Full Disk Access carefully
In Privacy & Security, review Full Disk Access as well. Apple describes it as broad access that can include all files on the Mac, data from other apps, Time Machine backups, and some administrative settings. Remove access if the app has no clear need for it. Seeing an unfamiliar entry warrants investigation, but is not conclusive evidence that information left the computer.
Change passwords if credentials may be exposed
From a trusted device—not the Mac you suspect may be infected—change passwords for accounts whose credentials may have been entered or stored there. Prioritize your Apple Account, primary email, password manager, and financial accounts as applicable. Use unique passwords, and replace any reused password on other accounts. Enable two-factor authentication if it is not already on.

If your Apple Account may be involved
Apple lists warning signs including sign-in notifications you do not recognize, an unexpected two-factor verification code, unfamiliar devices or account changes, or a password that no longer works. If you see these signs, change your Apple Account password, review account and security details, and remove devices you do not recognize at account.apple.com. Check that you still control the email addresses and phone numbers associated with the account. Apple recommends two-factor authentication; security keys are an optional additional safeguard against targeted attacks such as phishing.

Get malware help through a trusted route
Apple describes several macOS security layers, including Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect, that help prevent, block, or remediate malware. They reduce risk, but they do not establish whether a particular app accessed or transmitted your data. Apple says the Mac App Store is the safest place to get Mac apps. For software from outside the store, Gatekeeper checks for an identified developer signature and, by default on macOS Catalina and later, notarization. Notarization means Apple checked for known malware and none was detected at the time of that check; it is not a guarantee of harmless behavior or future privacy.

If you need help removing malware, the FTC suggests contacting the device manufacturer or a company you know and trust. Avoid responding to alarming pop-ups or ads that push an unverified download or support number. A scan can help find and remove identified malware, but should not be treated as proof that no information was accessed or sent.
Take steps based on the information at risk
Financial or payment information
If bank, card, or payment details may have been exposed, contact the relevant bank or card issuer using its official contact channel. Review transactions and report unfamiliar activity promptly.

Understand what you can and cannot confirm
macOS lets you inspect and limit an app’s access to certain files, data categories, and system capabilities. That review can help reduce future access and guide your next steps, but it is not a record of everything the app did. Without evidence specific to the app and incident, you cannot conclude from a permission setting, security feature, or scan alone that exposure either did or did not occur.
