If you sent an iMessage from an iPhone, act within two minutes: touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send. Apple’s feature works only for iMessage—not SMS, MMS, or RCS—and an older Apple operating system on the recipient’s device may still show the original. If you can’t unsend it, send a brief correction if appropriate; deleting the conversation on your phone will not erase a delivered copy from someone else’s device.
First, check whether Undo Send is available
On iPhone, touch and hold the sent bubble. If Undo Send appears, tap it immediately. Apple allows up to two minutes to unsend an eligible iMessage. The conversation will show an unsent notice, and the recipient may still see the original if their Apple operating system is older.

Apple says, “You can’t edit or unsend SMS, MMS, or RCS text messages.” If the message used one of these protocols, assume Apple’s Undo Send option cannot recall it. Deleting the thread from your own phone only changes what you see; it does not remove a delivered copy from the recipient’s device.

Whether a message is retractable depends on its protocol, the time since it was sent, and the recipient’s software. There is no universal way to delete a text from someone else’s phone.
What to do next
If it was an ordinary mistake
If a short clarification is appropriate, write something calm and direct, such as: “Sorry, that was meant for someone else—please delete it.” Don’t repeat sensitive details or send a long explanation. The recipient may not have seen the message yet, but a request to delete it cannot guarantee they haven’t read, copied, or saved it.

If the message contained sensitive information
Act on the information that was exposed rather than relying on the recipient to delete the text. Change a disclosed password through the service’s genuine app or website. If you sent banking or payment details, contact the institution using a number on your card or a contact route you already trust. Don’t use a link or phone number in an unexpected reply. The right response depends on what you disclosed; there is no single fix for every case.
Don’t confuse a sent mistake with a wrong-number scam
A mistaken text sent to someone you know is different from an unexpected message from a stranger claiming to have the wrong number. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers use these openings to draw people into conversation, sometimes steering it toward romance or investment schemes. Don’t reply to an unsolicited wrong-number text, click its links, or share personal information. If it claims to be from a company, bank, or public agency, contact that organization using information you already know is genuine.

The FTC reported that consumers lost $470 million to scams that started with text messages in 2024, five times the amount reported in 2020, despite fewer reports. That figure describes reported losses from text-initiated scams; it does not indicate the likelihood that an ordinary accidental text is dangerous. - On your phone: Use its report-junk or spam-reporting option if available. Google Messages also lets you block a sender without reporting; reporting is optional and may pass recent message information to Google and your carrier, as explained in Google Messages’ spam and blocking guidance.
- Forward to 7726: The FTC recommends forwarding scam texts to 7726 (SPAM).
- Report to the FTC: In the U.S., you can file a fraud report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Complain to the FCC: The U.S. Federal Communications Commission accepts unwanted-text complaints. It says complaints inform policy and may support enforcement, but it does not resolve individual complaints. Details are on the FCC’s unwanted calls and texts page.
