If you think you’ve invested in a crypto pyramid scheme, stop sending money, contact the exchange or crypto ATM operator you used, save the evidence, and report the fraud. Recovery is uncertain: a report or blockchain trace does not guarantee your funds will come back. The reporting routes below are for people in the United States; elsewhere, contact your local consumer-protection and law-enforcement authorities.
What to do first
- Stop payments. Do not pay withdrawal taxes, verification charges, penalties, or another deposit to unlock supposed profits. The FBI describes schemes where victims see fictitious gains, are pressed to invest more, and then face purported fees or taxes when they try to withdraw. It advises victims not to pay those charges or anyone claiming to recover the funds. FBI guidance
- Contact the provider you used to send the crypto. Call or message the exchange or crypto ATM operator promptly, say the transaction was fraudulent, and ask whether it can be stopped, reversed, or refunded. If you first used a bank transfer, card, wire, cash service, or payment app, contact that provider too and ask what fraud steps are available. A completed crypto transfer is not necessarily reversible. FTC cryptocurrency guidance · FTC steps after a scam
- Preserve what you have. Save transaction IDs, wallet addresses, exchange or ATM receipts, bank records, messages, website links, screenshots, phone numbers, usernames, and names used. Make a short timeline of how contact began, when you sent funds, when withdrawals failed, and what extra payments were demanded.
- Report the fraud. In the U.S., submit a report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). You can also contact your local FBI field office. The FTC’s cryptocurrency guidance also lists the CFTC complaint channel. Include the details you have and keep the confirmation or report number. Do not delay simply because some information is missing.
- Ignore unsolicited recovery offers. Do not send a supposed recovery agent money, passwords, wallet credentials, or a seed phrase. The FBI says private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders; exchanges freeze accounts through their own procedures or in response to legal process. Law enforcement does not charge victims a fee to investigate crimes. FBI recovery-scam warning
What evidence to gather
Collect what is available; you do not need every item to file a report. IC3 asks for transaction information and context about the scam, including how contact began and the platforms or identifiers involved. IC3 victim guidance

Can you get the cryptocurrency back?
It is worth contacting the payment provider and reporting the crime, but neither action guarantees recovery. The FTC says that after a cryptocurrency payment, you can usually get the money back only if the recipient sends it back. FTC guidance A blockchain trace, police report, civil claim, or recovery-company promise does not by itself return funds. Cryptocurrency may be moved through overseas exchanges, and private firms cannot issue seizure orders. FBI guidance
If you are considering a civil claim, get independent legal advice about your circumstances. Verify the lawyer’s identity, bar status, relevant experience, and fee terms yourself. The FBI has warned that fictitious law firms target people who have already lost money to crypto scams. FBI warning

How to recognize the scheme and avoid a second loss
A common pattern described by the FBI starts with unsolicited contact through social media, text, or a dating app. The person builds trust, directs the victim to a fake investment app or website, displays fabricated account growth, presses for more deposits, then blocks withdrawals and demands purported fees or taxes. A convincing dashboard is not proof that money is invested or withdrawable. FBI victim guidance
Not every crypto investment scam is a pyramid scheme. That label applies when the facts show a recruitment-based structure in which payouts depend on bringing in new participants; the steps above apply to crypto investment fraud more broadly.

In a June 15, 2026 alert, the FBI described a variation where scammers tell victims to obtain cash and hand it to couriers for supposed cryptocurrency investments, then demand taxes or penalties when victims try to withdraw. Do not meet unknown couriers or hand over cash or valuables for an investment. If you are in immediate danger or have already handed cash to a courier, contact local emergency services or law enforcement promptly. FBI courier alert

Recovery scams may involve unsolicited contact, guaranteed results, upfront fees, escalating charges after a tracing report, impersonation of government agencies or law firms, or requests for financial and personal information. The FBI has reported that fraudulent recovery businesses take upfront fees and then disappear or demand more. Why reporting still matters
Reporting helps authorities document and investigate fraud, even though it cannot promise an individual recovery. The FBI’s IC3 reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses for 2022 in its 2023 reporting; this is a historical reported-loss figure, not a current total or a prediction of whether any victim will recover funds. IC3 2022 report The FTC separately reported in 2021 that cryptocurrency accounted for more than half of reported investment-scam losses in its cited data, totaling $35 million; it covers a different period and reporting scope, so the figures should not be compared as equivalent datasets.
