Do not poke, dig, spray, block its entrance or try to move it. If it is a bumblebee nest and it does not create a specific safety hazard, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust generally recommends leaving it where it is. Its practical advice is specific to bumblebees; solitary bees and honeybees nest differently, so identify the situation as best you can without approaching and seek local expert advice when needed.
What to do first
- Move back and observe from a safe distance. Keep children and pets away from the entrance. Do not approach to take a closer look or attempt to identify the nest by touching it.
- Do not disturb or seal it. Avoid digging, spraying, poking, covering the entrance, or making noise and vibration close to the nest. These actions can damage a nest or provoke defensive behavior.
- Consider the location and the actual risk. A nest away from regular activity may be possible to leave alone. A nest by a doorway, building opening, busy path or play area deserves a plan to reduce contact; if you cannot do that safely, ask a qualified local service for advice.
- Work out what kind of bee situation it may be, without disturbing it. The detailed advice below is for bumblebee nests. A solitary bee nest or a honeybee colony or swarm may need a different response. If you are uncertain, do not treat every nest as one that needs removal.
For a bumblebee nest, the Trust says, “we generally recommend that nests are left alone and in place.” It also describes finding one as something to feel lucky about: “If you find a bumblebee nest, consider yourself very lucky!” Leaving a nest alone is not a guarantee that no one will be stung; it is a way to avoid unnecessary interference when there is no specific hazard.

“Wild bee nest” is a broad description, not a single situation with one universal remedy. The nest type, where it is, and how close people need to get all matter. Start with the least disruptive response: keep away, maintain clear access for the bees, and decide whether a temporary change to how people use the space is enough.
How to reduce contact with a bumblebee nest
If the nest is inconvenient but does not require professional assessment, small, temporary changes can help people and bees share the space. The aim is to keep people away from the entrance without obstructing the bees or requiring anyone to go close to the nest.

- Put a temporary barrier or fence between the nest entrance and a play area, path or seating area, especially to keep children or pets from approaching. Place it without blocking the bees’ route in or out.
- Move seating, play equipment or other frequently used items farther from the nest rather than working around it.
- Use fine netting over window openings if bees are entering through an open window and that is the immediate issue. Keep the nest entrance itself clear.
- Avoid noise and vibration close to the nest. If a necessary task would disturb it, consider whether it can wait or whether a local expert should assess the situation.
These measures are not a way to trap, redirect or relocate bees. Do not install a barrier if doing so means approaching the nest, and do not use netting or other material to close its entrance. A barrier is only a practical option where there is a genuine access concern and it can be set up safely; the Trust supports the concept of temporary separation, not a particular fence or product.
Think about the route people already take through the space. Moving a chair or play equipment may be simpler than trying to change the nest’s location. If you cannot keep children or pets away without going close to the entrance, do not force the adjustment—seek advice from a local service familiar with wildlife or bees.
What if you accidentally disturb the nest?
For a disturbed bumblebee nest, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust advises gently replacing material that covered it, or gently propping something over the top to shelter it from the weather. Then leave the area so the bees can repair the damage. This is bumblebee-specific guidance, not a universal remedy for a honeybee colony or a solitary bee nest.
Do not continue inspecting or handling the nest to see whether the repair worked. If the nest is inside a building, remains exposed, or is in a location where people cannot keep away, contact a local beekeeper, wildlife service or pest professional for advice appropriate to the bee and the location.
The important part is to keep the response brief and gentle. The advice is not to excavate the nest, rebuild it, or keep returning to check on it. After replacing cover or providing shelter as appropriate, leave the area so the bees have a chance to repair the damage. If you do not know whether it is a bumblebee nest, do not apply this specific instruction to another kind of nest; ask a local expert instead.

When to get local expert help
Ask for local advice if the nest is inside a building, beside a high-traffic entrance, or presents a specific safety concern that temporary separation cannot address. A local authority may be able to direct you to relevant beekeeping or wildlife services. The right referral and any rules about nests depend on where you live.
For a feral honeybee nest, UK Health and Safety Executive guidance advises members of the public to consider a professional pest controller or beekeeper rather than trying to deal with it themselves. That is UK guidance; it should not be presented as the referral route or legal rule everywhere. Check local services and requirements before arranging any intervention.

If you contact a service, describe where the nest is, how close it is to regular foot traffic, and whether it appears to be a bumblebee nest, solitary-bee nesting site, or honeybee colony or swarm—only if you can make that observation from a distance. Do not handle or open the nest to provide more detail. Ask the service what qualifications or local authorization apply and whether the proposed response can avoid unnecessary harm to bees.
You can also explain what makes the location difficult: for example, whether it is close to a doorway, an opening into a building, a play area or a frequently used path. These details help a service assess exposure without you having to get closer to the nest. Availability, qualifications, and any local authorization requirements vary, so verify them locally rather than assuming a particular service or removal option exists.
Why bee type matters
“Wild bee nest” can mean different things. Bumblebees, solitary bees and honeybees do not all nest in the same way, so advice for one should not automatically be applied to another. The sources available for this guidance offer detailed practical steps for bumblebee nests and a professional-help recommendation for feral honeybee nests; they do not provide a complete identification key or a universal procedure for all wild bees.

These differences affect the next step. For a bumblebee nest with no specific hazard, the Trust generally recommends leaving it in place. A feral honeybee colony is a case where UK HSE guidance points members of the public toward considering professional help. For solitary bees, the material available here does not provide a removal procedure, so do not assume that either of those responses applies. If the type is unclear, a cautious distance and local assessment are better than a guess.
Do bumblebee nests go away on their own?
The Bumblebee Conservation Trust says bumblebee nests usually last two to six months. That seasonal duration is about bumblebee nests, not a promise that all bee activity in a location will end on a particular date. It can make leaving a nest in place a practical option when it is not creating a specific hazard, but do not use the estimate to ignore a safety concern or to infer how long a different kind of bee colony will remain.
The figure is useful for weighing a temporary inconvenience against the disruption of an intervention, but it is not a countdown for a particular nest. The sources do not give a way to predict an individual nest’s end date. If there is a genuine safety issue, do not wait simply because bumblebee nests usually last two to six months; seek local advice about the actual location.
Why leaving a nest alone can matter
Bees are part of the wider group of insects that pollinate plants. Defra’s UK Bees’ Needs page, published in 2016, reported 1,500 insect species that pollinate plants in the UK, including 25 bumblebee species and 260 solitary bee species. The same page put the estimated value of insect pollination to crops, through increases in the yield and quality of seeds and fruit, at £600 million. These are figures published by the UK government in 2016, not current global estimates.

Those figures do not mean that every nest should remain in every location regardless of risk. They do help explain why unnecessary disturbance is not a neutral choice: when a nest can be left safely, avoiding interference supports wildlife as well as reducing the chance of provoking bees.
The figures also put the variety of UK pollinating insects in context: the page’s count of solitary bee species is much larger than its count of bumblebee species. They are UK-specific figures from 2016, not a count of nests near your home or a current estimate for other countries. Use them as context for why a careful, non-disruptive response can matter—not as a reason to ignore a specific safety concern.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Blocking the entrance: Bees need access to the nest. Do not plug a hole, cover an opening or place a barrier across the flight path.
- Trying to remove it yourself: Digging, opening a wall or moving nest material can disturb bees and damage the nest. A feral honeybee situation warrants local professional advice rather than a do-it-yourself attempt.
- Using a pesticide or nest-killing product: The guidance here supports leaving bumblebee nests undisturbed where possible and seeking qualified local help when circumstances call for it; it does not support using a product to kill or remove a nest.
- Assuming all bees are the same: Bumblebee advice does not automatically apply to solitary bees or honeybee colonies. If the type is unclear, keep your distance and request an assessment.
- Assuming another country’s rules apply: The HSE recommendation is UK-specific. Local protections, services and procedures depend on your jurisdiction.
Can the Bumblebee Conservation Trust come and move a bumblebee nest for me?
The Trust’s general recommendation is to leave bumblebee nests alone and in place. The information summarized here does not establish whether the Trust offers a nest-moving service, so do not assume it can attend or relocate a nest. If the location creates a specific concern, check directly with the Trust or a relevant local service about what help is available where you live. Any relocation or other intervention should be assessed locally; do not attempt it yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I move a wild bee nest?
Do not try to move it yourself. If it is a bumblebee nest and there is no specific hazard, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust generally recommends leaving it in place. For a nest in a building, a high-traffic area or another difficult location, contact a qualified local service for advice suited to the bee type and local rules.
What should I do if I disturb a bumblebee nest?
The Trust advises gently replacing material that covered the nest, or gently propping something over it to shelter it from weather, then leaving the area so the bees can repair the damage. This advice is for bumblebee nests, not every kind of bee nest.

How long does a bumblebee nest last?
The Bumblebee Conservation Trust says bumblebee nests usually last two to six months. This is a general seasonal duration, not a guaranteed end date for an individual nest, and it does not describe honeybee colonies or solitary bee activity.
Who should I contact about a feral honeybee nest?
UK Health and Safety Executive guidance advises members of the public to consider a professional pest controller or beekeeper rather than handling a feral honeybee nest themselves. Elsewhere, contact a relevant local authority or bee or wildlife service to learn what help and rules apply.
Can the Bumblebee Conservation Trust come and move a bumblebee nest?
The Trust generally recommends leaving bumblebee nests alone and in place. The available guidance does not establish whether it offers a nest-moving service. Check directly with the Trust or a local service about options in your area; do not attempt to move the nest yourself.
The Bottom Line
Keep back, leave the entrance clear and avoid disturbing a wild bee nest. If it is a bumblebee nest without a specific hazard, the usual advice is to leave it in place and use safe, temporary separation if needed. For a nest inside a building, near heavy activity or involving a feral honeybee colony, seek local expert advice rather than trying to remove it yourself. Rules and services vary by location.
