What to Do If You Don’t Have an Ethernet Outlet

A room without an Ethernet jack can still get a wired network path through a direct cable, coax or powerline adapters—or better Wi-Fi with mesh or an extender.

You can still get internet in a room without a wall Ethernet jack. If the router is nearby, run an Ethernet cable from its LAN port; otherwise, use existing coax or electrical wiring, improve Wi-Fi coverage, or have Ethernet installed. First decide whether you need a wired connection to the device or simply a stronger Wi-Fi signal.

First, identify what you need to connect

An Ethernet outlet is a wall jack connected to your home network. Not having one in a room does not necessarily mean you need one: a phone, tablet, or laptop may work over Wi-Fi, while a desktop PC, game console, or other device may benefit from a wired connection. Also check the device itself: some computers have no Ethernet port, even if you can get a cable to the room.

  • You need better wireless coverage: consider mesh Wi-Fi or a range extender.
  • You need a wired connection in the room: check whether a cable can reach, or whether coax or powerline adapters can provide a network path.
  • Your device has no Ethernet port: a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter can add one, but it does not connect the room to the router by itself. Microsoft describes connecting a Windows PC to a router by Ethernet in its network setup guidance.

Choose a connection method

Option Best fit What to check
Direct Ethernet cable The router is close enough for a cable to reach the device. An available LAN port on the router and an Ethernet port on the device, or a compatible USB adapter.
MoCA adapters Usable coax outlets are available near the router and in the destination room. Router-side MoCA support, adapter count, and whether the coax setup is compatible.
Powerline adapters You want a wired network path using existing electrical wiring. Whether the adapters can be used on the same electrical circuit; actual results depend on wiring conditions.
Mesh Wi-Fi You want broader wireless coverage, potentially across several rooms. Whether the node has Ethernet ports if you need to plug in a device, and whether nodes connect to each other wirelessly or over Ethernet.
Wi-Fi range extender Coverage is the problem and you want to repeat an existing Wi-Fi signal. Whether the extender’s location can receive a usable signal from the router. It does not itself create a wall Ethernet outlet.
Permanent Ethernet cabling You need a dependable wired link and existing wiring is unsuitable. Whether a local low-voltage cabling or home-network installer can route cable to the room.

Use a direct cable if the router is within reach

Connect an Ethernet cable from an available LAN port on the router to the device. This is the simplest way to get a wired connection without a wall jack, provided the cable can reach safely and conveniently. If the device lacks an Ethernet port, connect a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter to it, then connect the cable to the adapter. The adapter supplies a port, not the network path, so the cable still needs to run back to the router or another network connection.

Use coax wiring with MoCA adapters

If coax outlets are available at both the router and the destination, MoCA adapters can carry network traffic over the existing coax wiring and provide an Ethernet connection in the room. Verizon describes MoCA as delivering an Ethernet connection through existing coax cable. Check whether your router supports MoCA and whether your setup needs one or two adapters before buying or connecting equipment. Verizon says its cited adapter does not support satellite-TV-based home networks; that limitation applies to the adapter described on its MoCA support page, so check compatibility for your particular equipment.

  • 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐲 - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
  • 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.

Try powerline adapters if the electrical wiring suits them

A powerline kit uses adapters at the router and destination to carry network data over household electrical wiring. In TP-Link’s described setup, the adapters need to be on the same electrical circuit. That makes powerline a conditional option: verify the circuit arrangement and expect results to depend on the home’s wiring and interference conditions. The available guidance does not establish a particular speed or guarantee that every home’s wiring will work. See TP-Link’s powerline guidance for its setup conditions.

Improve Wi-Fi when a wired outlet is not the goal

Mesh Wi-Fi

A mesh system can extend wireless coverage through the home, making it worth considering when the room is a dead zone. Mesh systems differ: check whether the node you plan to place in the room has Ethernet ports if you need to connect a device by cable, and whether the nodes communicate over Wi-Fi or a wired backhaul. A mesh node with an Ethernet port can connect a nearby device, but that does not mean the room has a built-in wall jack.

  • 2 GIGABIT PORTS - Provides a secure wired network for connected devices, such as desktops, smart TVs, game consoles, and more. Ethernet cables are included. Tip: Expand connections with an Ethernet switch (sold separately).

Wi-Fi range extender

An extender receives and repeats an existing Wi-Fi signal. It may help when the only issue is weak coverage, but it does not create a wired outlet. Placement matters: it needs to receive a usable signal where it is installed in order to repeat coverage onward. TP-Link’s comparison and guidance discusses powerline and Wi-Fi extension options.

Install Ethernet for a permanent wired connection

If coax and powerline are unsuitable and you need a dependable wired connection, consider having Ethernet cable run to the room. A local low-voltage cabling or home-network installer is the relevant type of service; availability and installation requirements depend on your home and location.

Make the choice based on your home

  • Router close by: run a cable directly, using a USB-to-Ethernet adapter only if the device lacks a port.
  • Coax outlets at both ends: check router compatibility and MoCA adapter requirements.
  • Electrical wiring is the available path: verify the powerline kit’s circuit requirements before relying on it.
  • Only Wi-Fi coverage is poor: compare mesh and extender placement and features; neither automatically installs a wall jack.
  • None of the existing paths fits, but wired reliability matters: arrange permanent cabling.
