Close the page and stop interacting with it. A click alone does not prove that your wallet or funds were compromised, but the correct response depends on what happened next: whether you connected a wallet, signed a message or transaction, approved token access, disclosed a recovery phrase or private key, installed software, or can see unauthorized activity. Do not enter a recovery phrase, and do not trust unsolicited “support” messages offering to help.
First, stop the interaction
Close the browser tab or application that opened the link. Do not click buttons such as “connect wallet,” “verify,” “claim,” “unlock,” or “synchronize.” Do not sign a message, approve a transaction, download an extension, install an application, or type a password, recovery phrase, private key, or two-factor code into the page.

If the page downloaded a file, do not open it. If you installed or ran anything, disconnect the device from the network if practical and treat that as a separate security incident. A page visit and a software installation have very different risk profiles; closing a tab cannot undo a program that has already run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not reply to the account that sent the link. Scammers frequently follow a phishing attempt with a fake “recovery agent” who asks for your seed phrase, remote access, a transfer to a new wallet, or an upfront fee.

Work out what happened after the click
Use the following triage table before taking action. A wallet connection, a token allowance and a completed transfer are separate events, so one must not be used as a shorthand for another.
| What happened | What it can expose or authorize | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Only opened the page | The available guidance does not establish that opening a page by itself compromises a wallet. Risk is higher if a download ran or credentials were entered. | Close the page, delete any download without opening it, and continue with the checks below. |
| Connected a wallet but signed nothing | The site may be able to see the public address, balances and on-chain activity. This is not the same as granting token spending permission. | Disconnect the site from the wallet’s settings. Then separately inspect token allowances. |
| Signed a message or transaction | The signature may have authorized an action, depending on its content and the wallet interface. | Review activity in the official wallet app and the relevant chain’s official explorer. Investigate any unfamiliar result immediately. |
| Approved a token allowance | The contract may be able to interact with the approved token amount, potentially including an unlimited allowance. | Revoke the allowance through the wallet or a reputable approval-management tool, understanding that revocation is itself an on-chain transaction and may require a network fee. |
| Entered a recovery phrase or private key | Anyone who obtains it can control the accounts created from it. | Treat every account tied to that phrase as compromised. Create a new wallet separately and move remaining assets only if it is safe to do so. |
| Installed a fake wallet or other software | Malware or a malicious extension may capture credentials or alter transactions. | Stop using the affected installation, use a different browser profile or device for recovery, and follow the wallet provider’s official incident instructions. |
| See an unauthorized transaction | Assets may already have been transferred. Completed blockchain transactions generally cannot be reversed by the wallet provider. | Secure any remaining funds promptly, check for a transaction-draining “sweeper,” and report the incident through official channels. |
If you only opened the link
Do not assume that the click itself proves a compromise, but do not treat it as a guarantee of safety either. Confirm that you did not connect a wallet, sign anything, approve an allowance, enter credentials, or install software. Check the browser’s download history and your operating system’s recent applications. A downloaded file that was never opened is a different situation from an installer or extension that was executed.
Change a password only if you typed it into the phishing page or otherwise believe it was exposed. Change it from the service’s official application or a URL you enter yourself, not from a link in the message. If the same password was reused elsewhere, change those accounts too and review two-factor authentication settings.

If you connected your wallet but did not sign anything
A connection normally lets a decentralized application identify your public address and read information that is already public on the blockchain, such as balances and activity. It does not automatically give the site permission to spend every token. That spending authority is normally created by a separate approval transaction.
Disconnect the site
- Open the wallet through its official app or extension, not through the phishing page.
- Open the wallet’s connected-sites, permissions or session-management area. The label differs by wallet and version.
- Remove the unfamiliar domain and any other connection you do not recognize.
- Repeat the check for each account and network you used. Disconnecting one account or chain does not necessarily remove another connection.
Disconnecting ends the wallet session; it does not revoke a token allowance that was granted earlier. Continue to the allowance check even when the wallet now shows no connected sites.
If you signed a message or transaction
Open the wallet’s activity history and compare it with the chain’s official block explorer, reached independently. Look for unfamiliar contract calls, transfers, approvals, network changes or signatures made at the time of the phishing visit. Read the transaction details rather than relying on a shortened domain name or a reassuring pop-up.
Recommended Free Tools
Check and revoke token approvals
An approval can permit a smart contract to transfer a specified token amount later. Unlimited approvals are particularly important to investigate because the contract may not need another signature to use the allowance. In the wallet’s security or permissions view, identify approvals you did not intend to grant and revoke them. Some wallets provide this function directly; if yours does not, an approval-revocation service such as revoke.cash is cited by Coinbase as an option. Verify the tool’s address independently and understand the transaction before signing it.

Revocation is not a refund. It stops future use of that allowance but does not reverse a transfer that already occurred. The revocation transaction may require the network’s native fee token, so confirm the fee and destination in the wallet before approving.
If you entered a recovery phrase or private key
Consider the associated wallet permanently compromised. Anyone who has the recovery phrase can access the accounts derived from it, and a private key controls its corresponding account. Do not keep using the old wallet for storage, even if its balance appears unchanged.
- Use a different browser profile or a second, clean device to create a new wallet.
- Write down the new recovery phrase offline and store it securely. Never photograph it, upload it, email it or type it into a website.
- Verify the new receiving addresses on the clean device before moving assets.
- Move remaining funds from the old accounts only if the transaction can be completed safely.
- Stop using the old wallet and every account associated with the exposed phrase.
- Report the phishing incident to the wallet provider and any exchange or service involved.
If assets disappear as soon as they arrive, a sweeper may be monitoring the compromised account. In that case, do not send additional ETH or another token merely to “pay gas”; the attacker may take that deposit as well. Follow the provider’s incident guidance instead of experimenting with repeated transfers.

Blockchain transfers that have completed generally cannot be reversed by a wallet company. A wallet provider may help you secure the account and document the incident, but it cannot promise to restore missing funds. If an exchange received the assets, provide the exchange with the transaction details through its official reporting process; recovery is not guaranteed.
When a compromised account still holds funds, prioritize safety over speed. A clean device or browser profile is preferable. If you suspect an active sweeper, stop sending funds to the old address and ask the wallet provider for specific instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you installed a fake wallet or extension
Uninstalling a suspicious extension is not enough to prove that credentials are safe. Malicious software may have captured a phrase, private key, password or session data before removal. Disconnect the device from the internet if that helps prevent further activity, then use a clean device or profile for wallet creation and password changes.
- Do not export a wallet or reveal its phrase on the affected machine.
- Review browser extensions and recently installed applications, but avoid opening unknown files.
- Run your operating system’s trusted security checks and install updates from official settings.
- After securing assets, rotate credentials that may have been entered while the software was active.
For a hardware wallet, verify transaction details on the device’s own screen. A computer display or browser extension can be manipulated even when the hardware device is genuine.

How to contact legitimate support
Navigate to support from the wallet vendor’s official website or application that you open yourself. Do not use a support link sent in a direct message, reply, pop-up or search advertisement unless you independently confirm the destination.
Coinbase says its customer-service agents will never ask for a recovery phrase, password, two-factor code, software installation, remote access, or a transfer to a new wallet or external address. Ledger warns that there is never a good reason to type a recovery phrase into a computer and says it will not contact users by phone or text. These rules are useful for recognizing impersonators regardless of which wallet you use.
Legitimate support may ask for public information such as a transaction hash, public address, screenshots with secrets redacted, wallet version or device type. It should not need your seed phrase or private key. Ignore anyone promising guaranteed recovery for an upfront payment or directing you to a “safe” wallet.
Unexpected airdrops and dust tokens
If the phishing link arrived through an unsolicited token or NFT, do not interact with that asset. Unexpected dust can contain a malicious URL or attempt to lure you into a contract approval. Leave it untouched, hide it in the wallet if that feature is available, and do not visit links embedded in its name, description or metadata.
Hiding an asset changes only what you see in the interface; it does not move or burn the token. The safest response is to avoid signing any transaction involving an unsolicited asset.
A practical incident checklist
- Close the phishing page and stop responding to the sender.
- Confirm whether you connected, signed, approved, disclosed a secret, installed software or observed an unauthorized transfer.
- Disconnect unfamiliar sites from every affected account and network.
- Inspect approvals separately; disconnecting a site does not revoke them.
- Use a clean device or browser profile if a phrase, key, password or software installation may be involved.
- Create a new wallet when a recovery phrase or private key was exposed, and stop using all accounts derived from it.
- Move remaining assets only when it is safe; do not fund a suspected sweeper account.
- Save transaction hashes and report the incident through independently verified support channels.
- Never provide a recovery phrase, private key, password, two-factor code or remote access to anyone offering help.
What this guidance cannot guarantee
Wallet menus, chain explorers, support routes and third-party approval tools change. The exact labels described above are examples based on guidance from MetaMask, Coinbase and Ledger, not universal instructions for every wallet. The wallet, chain, device and action following the click determine the correct response. If you are unsure whether a signature or approval was dangerous, preserve the public transaction details and ask the wallet provider through its verified support channel without disclosing secrets.
