Eating recalled food does not mean you will become ill. If symptoms develop, contact a healthcare provider; seek prompt care for serious warning signs such as bloody diarrhea, repeated vomiting, or dehydration.
This guidance reflects U.S. federal food-safety advice. If you live elsewhere, follow your local food-safety authority’s instructions.

First, confirm whether your food is part of the recall
Find the official recall notice and compare it with the product you ate or still have. Check the food name, brand, package size, UPC, lot code, and date codes. The notice may also identify affected stores or distribution areas and explain what consumers should do. A recall may cover specific batches rather than every package of a brand, so do not assume your product is included—or excluded—based on the brand name alone. Follow the notice rather than relying on the food’s appearance, smell, or taste.

In the United States, the FDA handles foods other than meat, poultry, and processed egg products; the USDA handles those categories. Use the regulator and notice relevant to the food. See the FDA’s food recall guidance.

Stop eating it and handle leftovers safely
Do not eat more of the food or serve it to anyone else. Follow the recall notice’s instructions: recalled food may be eligible for a refund, or the notice may tell you to dispose of it or take another action. If disposal is instructed, wrap the food securely before putting it in the trash. Do not donate it or feed it to pets.
Clean anything the food may have touched
If the recalled food was stored or prepared in your home, wash refrigerator walls and shelves, countertops, cutting boards, utensils, and other surfaces that may have contacted it. The FDA recommends sanitizing with a solution of one tablespoon of chlorine bleach in one gallon of hot water, then drying with a clean cloth or unused paper towel. Wash your hands with warm water and soap after cleaning. Follow different current product-specific or local instructions if the recall notice provides them.

Watch for symptoms without relying on a countdown
Food poisoning can cause diarrhea, stomach pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Symptoms may start within hours or take days, depending on the germ. The CDC’s examples span 30 minutes to four weeks, so feeling well for a few hours—or even longer—does not establish that you will not become ill. Know when to contact a healthcare provider
If you develop symptoms after eating the recalled food, contact a healthcare provider to report them and get advice. CDC warning signs that call for medical care include:

- Bloody diarrhea.
- Diarrhea lasting more than three days.
- Fever higher than 102°F.
- Vomiting so often that you cannot keep liquids down.
- Signs of dehydration, such as urinating very little, a dry mouth or throat, or dizziness when standing.
Call 911 in an emergency, as advised by FoodSafety.gov. Pregnant people who have a fever and flu-like symptoms should contact their doctor, according to the CDC.

CDC identifies adults 65 and older, children under five, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems as being at increased risk of severe food poisoning. For context, the CDC says nearly half of people aged 65 and older with a lab-confirmed foodborne illness caused by Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria, or E. coli are hospitalized. That figure applies to those specified infections and age group, not to every older adult or every foodborne illness. Read the CDC’s guidance on people at increased risk.

If you or someone in one of these groups ate the recalled food and you are concerned, ask a healthcare provider for advice specific to the person and exposure. Official consumer guidance does not prescribe one test or medicine for everyone who ate recalled food but has no symptoms.

Keep product details and report suspected illness
If you become ill, keep the packaging, labels, lot or date codes, and receipt if available. Note what you ate and your activities during the prior week. These details can help a healthcare provider and local health officials identify a possible source. The CDC recommends reporting suspected food poisoning to your local health department; its guidance on what to do if you think you have food poisoning explains what information to share.
