Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Windows 11 setup appears stuck, first identify what is actually happening: installation may be progressing through automatic restarts, Windows Update may be stalled, setup may show an error, or the upgrade may have rolled back. Don’t force the PC off just because the screen has not changed for a short time; Microsoft does not give a universal safe waiting time or stuck percentage. Record the screen, any error code, and whether Windows still starts, then follow the matching steps below.
First, identify the setup problem
Before changing anything, note the exact message or error code, the setup phase, the last percentage you saw change, whether you can sign in to Windows, and your PC’s make and model. Also note whether it is managed by work or school; some recovery options may not be available on managed devices. These details help distinguish a slow process from a failed upgrade, but Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance cannot identify a specific machine’s cause without them.

- Setup is still running or restarting: Windows 11 installation includes a required restart and several more automatic restarts. A screen that looks paused by itself does not prove setup has failed. Keep a laptop connected to power and avoid interrupting setup while it appears active, unless the PC is clearly unresponsive or guidance for the displayed error says otherwise. Microsoft does not specify a universal wait duration or percentage threshold. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance.
- Windows starts, but Windows Update is not advancing: Use the Windows Update steps in the next section.
- An error appears: Write down its full text and code. Avoid guessing at the cause or removing apps, drivers, or peripherals unless the error or official guidance points to them.
- Setup returns to your earlier Windows version: This is a rollback. If Windows starts, protect your files and follow the rollback steps below.
- The PC will not start: Skip to the Windows Recovery Environment steps. Recovery may require your BitLocker recovery key.
If Windows Update is stalled but Windows still starts
Microsoft says update duration depends on the connection speed, network settings, and update size. For an update that stays at 0% or 100%, its troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting, checking the connection, and checking available disk space. If the percentage still does not change, run the Windows Update troubleshooter or check for updates again.
- Restart Windows normally.
- Check that your internet connection is working and that the PC has adequate free disk space. Microsoft’s general upgrade-space guidance lists 16 GB for upgrading a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. These figures are from Microsoft’s general update troubleshooting discussion; they are not a complete statement of every current Windows 11 feature-upgrade requirement.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run next to Windows Update. Follow the prompts. If those labels differ on your Windows version, search Settings for “troubleshoot” and choose the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
See Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting steps. If Windows 11 is not offered, Microsoft recommends waiting for Windows Update to offer it to an eligible Windows 10 device; current-version updates may need to be installed first. Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 FAQ and installation guidance to check the offer and readiness rather than assuming a stalled download is the only issue.

If Windows 11 setup rolled back and Windows starts
Back up important files before trying recovery. If the upgrade displayed an error, keep its exact text or code; a rollback alone does not establish what caused it. Microsoft says some apps are removed during an upgrade because they are known to cause problems or may not work correctly with Windows 11. If setup named an incompatible app, check with its publisher for a compatible version before retrying. Do not assume an unnamed app caused the rollback.
- Install pending updates for the Windows version currently on the PC, then restart. Microsoft notes that current-version updates may need to be installed before Windows 11 is offered.
- Check the compatibility or readiness information relevant to your PC, and address any specific error or named incompatibility before retrying the upgrade.
- Retry through Windows Update when it offers the upgrade to the eligible device. If the same error returns, record the new message and setup phase instead of repeating the same attempt without new information.
For an overview of less disruptive recovery choices, including uninstalling a recent update or using Go back to a previous version of Windows when available, consult Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. “Go back” preserves personal files, but removes apps, drivers, and settings added or changed after the upgrade.
If Windows will not start: use Windows Recovery Environment
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) provides built-in recovery tools for a PC that cannot start. Back up files first if you can. Most WinRE options may require the BitLocker recovery key on an encrypted device; make sure you can access that key before proceeding.

- If Windows Recovery Environment appears during startup, use its on-screen recovery options. The available choices depend on the Windows version and the state of the PC.
- If you cannot reach WinRE, create Windows installation media using another working PC, start the affected PC from that media, and choose Repair my PC to reach recovery tools. Follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance for the available options.
- Consider the least disruptive option that fits the problem, such as uninstalling a recent update. Read the on-screen effects before confirming a recovery action.
Starting from installation media and choosing Repair my PC is different from choosing to reinstall Windows from that media. A reinstall from installation media removes everything from the device. The PC maker’s recovery media may include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft media does not. Match recovery media or support instructions to the PC’s manufacturer and model.
Choose recovery by the problem and its effects
Recovery choices differ in what they repair and what they change. Use the option that matches whether Windows starts, whether you are undoing a recent change or repairing the current installation, and what data or settings you can afford to lose.
| Situation | Safer next step | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Windows starts; Windows Update is stalled | Restart, check connection and free space, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then check for updates again. | A single unchanged percentage does not by itself establish failure. Microsoft guidance. |
| Upgrade rolled back; Windows starts | Record any error, install pending updates for the current Windows version, and check compatibility before retrying. | Current-version updates may need to be installed before Windows 11 is offered. Microsoft installation guidance. |
| Windows 11 is unstable after an update | Use the recovery option suited to the symptom and Windows version. | “Fix problems using Windows Update” is a conditional repair of the current installation, not a fix for a failed upgrade attempt; see the next section. |
| PC will not start | Enter WinRE and consider an appropriate recovery option, such as uninstalling a recent update. | Most WinRE options may require the BitLocker recovery key. Microsoft recovery guidance. |
| Less disruptive options fail | Consider reset or reinstall only after backing up and reviewing the consequences. | A reinstall from installation media removes everything; manufacturer recovery media may offer hardware-specific drivers. Microsoft recovery guidance. |
When “Fix problems using Windows Update” is available
On eligible Windows 11 version 22H2 or later devices, Fix problems using Windows Update can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. It repairs the Windows installation already on the device; it is not a remedy for an upgrade to Windows 11 that failed before completing.

- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
This option needs an internet connection and power throughout the repair. It may be absent on work- or school-managed devices and on devices that lack required servicing updates. Use it only if it appears as an available recovery option and matches the problem. Details and eligibility conditions are in Microsoft’s Windows repair and reinstall guidance.
When to reset or reinstall
Reset and reinstall are later options, not interchangeable names for the same repair. Review what each option removes, back up files, and confirm that you can access any recovery key before starting. If you use installation media, choosing a full reinstall removes everything from the device. A manufacturer-provided recovery image may be preferable when its hardware-specific drivers or factory applications are needed; check the instructions for your exact PC model.
Microsoft’s recovery guide explains the available options and their effects: Recovery options in Windows. For installation media and the distinction between repair tools and reinstalling, see Reinstall Windows with installation media.
