First, check whether the mistake appears on the receipt, your payment account, or both. Save the receipt and account record, ask the retailer to correct the transaction, and contact your card issuer or bank promptly if the error remains. In the U.S., credit-card billing-error rules and debit-card dispute procedures differ, so the next steps depend on how you paid.
Check whether the error is on the receipt or your account
Compare the itemized receipt with what you bought and took home. Note the item description, quantity, price, transaction date, store location, and register or lane number if shown. Then check your card or bank account separately: a duplicate line on a receipt is not the same thing as two payment entries.

If an account entry is pending, watch to see whether it posts or disappears. There is no universal timeline for pending authorizations, so do not assume it will be removed by a particular date. If two entries post, record both amounts and dates.

Keep the paper or electronic receipt, a screenshot or statement showing the payment entry, and any messages or case number from the store. The FTC recommends retaining receipts and communications when documenting a purchase issue (FTC guidance on billing problems).

Contact the customer-service desk, store manager, or retailer’s support channel. Explain the discrepancy plainly, ask the store to review the transaction, and request a refund or correction for the wrong amount. Ask for written confirmation and note when you spoke and with whom. The CFPB advises consumers to contact the seller first and ask it to refund the money or undo the charge (CFPB guidance).
- If one item was scanned twice, identify the duplicate line and the amount.
- If the receipt is correct but an item was missing from your bag, say that you were charged for an item you did not receive.
- If two payment entries posted, provide the dates and amounts of both.
Describe what happened accurately. A store scanning mistake is not automatically fraud or an unauthorized transaction.
If the retailer does not resolve it, contact your payment provider
For a posted error that the store has not promptly corrected, contact the credit-card issuer or debit-card bank and follow its dispute instructions. Do not let a lengthy retailer exchange cause you to miss a payment-dispute deadline. Keep copies of anything you submit and any response you receive. Dispute only the incorrect amount or transaction, and pay undisputed amounts when required.
If you paid by credit card
A duplicate billing or a charge for something you did not receive can qualify as a billing error under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) process for credit cards and other revolving credit. To use the written process described by the FTC, send a notice to the issuer’s billing-inquiries address and include copies—not originals—of supporting documents. The notice must reach the issuer within 60 days after the first statement containing the error was sent. The FTC says the issuer generally must acknowledge the complaint within 30 days unless it has already resolved it, and resolve it within 90 days (FTC billing-error guidance).

While the issuer investigates under this process, you may withhold the disputed amount and related charges, but you must pay the undisputed portion. CFPB guidance also recommends contacting the seller first and says to send a billing-error notice within 60 days of the charge appearing on the statement (CFPB credit-card guidance). These rules should not be assumed to apply identically to every product branded as a card or to installment services.
If you paid by debit card
Debit-card protections and procedures differ from credit-card billing-error rules. Contact the bank or other debit-card issuer promptly and ask which dispute process applies to your situation; FTC guidance recommends following up in writing and cautions that a consumer may not have the same ability to obtain a refund for non-delivery as with a credit-card billing error (FTC debit-card guidance).
The CFPB describes electronic-transfer procedures for unauthorized transactions, including a general ten-business-day investigation period and conditions for provisional credit if an investigation takes longer. It also says some point-of-sale debit-card cases can take up to 90 days for final resolution. Those timelines concern the electronic-transfer procedures described by the CFPB; they are not a universal timetable for every merchant complaint or debit transaction (CFPB electronic-transfer guidance, last modified August 31, 2026).
Check whether your state has an additional remedy
Consumer protections can depend on where you live and what kind of checkout error occurred. For example, Michigan’s Attorney General describes a Scanner Error Bill of Rights for a qualifying shelf-price scanner overcharge: the scanner must charge more than the displayed shelf price, the sale must be completed, and the shopper must have a receipt identifying the item and price charged. The shopper must notify the seller within 30 days. The state says the seller may owe the difference plus a bonus of ten times the difference, with a $1 minimum and $5 maximum, within two days after notice; the guidance also describes a possible court remedy if the seller does not provide the refund and bonus (Michigan Attorney General scanner-law guidance).

This Michigan rule is about a qualifying shelf-price overcharge. It should not be assumed to cover an item that was charged for but never received, every duplicate scan, or transactions in other states. Elsewhere, check your state attorney general or consumer-protection agency for applicable rules.
Use a clear, factual message
You can adapt this wording for the store or payment provider:
I’m contacting you about a self-checkout transaction at [store/location] on [date/time]. I purchased [quantity/item], but the receipt/payment record shows [duplicate charge / charge for an item I did not receive] for [$amount]. I have the receipt and account record. Please review the transaction and correct or refund the disputed amount. Please give me a case number or written confirmation of the outcome.

Change the description to match the facts. If the item was scanned twice, say that; if the receipt is right but the item was missing from your bag, explain that; if two payment entries posted, list both. Do not label a merchant error as an unauthorized transaction unless you genuinely did not authorize the transaction.
