If Quick Start seems stuck, first check whether the transfer is still changing—elapsed time alone does not prove it has failed. Keep the old iPhone connected to Wi-Fi with Bluetooth on, place both iPhones close together, and leave them connected to power. Apple says transfer time varies with network conditions and the amount of data; it does not give a universal timeout for a stalled transfer.
Check whether the transfer is actually stuck
Look at the progress or status shown on the iPhones. If it is still changing, give the transfer time to finish rather than interrupting it based only on how long it has taken. Apple Support says, “Transfer times can vary based on factors such as network conditions and the amount of data being transferred.” Apple does not specify a standard completion time or a point at which a transfer should be declared frozen. Apple’s Quick Start instructions explain the factors that affect timing.

Keep the conditions needed for wireless Quick Start
- On the current iPhone, make sure Wi-Fi is connected and Bluetooth is turned on.
- Keep the two iPhones close together throughout the transfer.
- Connect both phones to power and leave them connected until migration completes.
Direct migration keeps both devices occupied until the transfer finishes. Avoid treating an ordinary long transfer as a failure when Apple’s guidance says timing varies.

If the prompt to set up the new iPhone disappears from the current iPhone, Apple’s specific instruction is to restart both devices. Apple Support states: “If the prompt to set up your new device disappears from your current device, restart both devices.” Then begin setup again. This instruction applies to a disappeared setup prompt; Apple’s guidance does not establish restarting as a universal fix for every frozen progress screen.

Choose another supported transfer method if Quick Start cannot finish
Apple also supports downloading from an iCloud backup, restoring a computer backup, and transferring data with a cable. Which option makes sense depends on whether you have a suitable backup, whether your iPhone models support the same cable setup, and whether you need to use the new phone while data is arriving.

Use an iCloud backup
During setup, choose the iCloud backup option and select the backup you want to restore. Apps and data continue downloading in the background, unlike direct migration, which occupies both iPhones until it finishes. A background download may let you start using the new iPhone sooner, but it is not a guarantee that the data copy itself will complete faster. See Apple’s Quick Start and transfer guidance.

Restore a computer backup
If you have a computer backup made with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, use Apple’s restore process and choose the correct backup. Apple documents this option in its guide to transferring data to a new iPhone.
Transfer with a cable that matches both iPhones
Check the source and destination models before choosing a cable. Apple specifies a USB-C to Lightning cable for transferring from an iPhone 14 or earlier to an iPhone 15 or later, and a USB-C Charge Cable for transferring between iPhone 15 or later models. Other model pairings can require different cable or adapter arrangements, so follow Apple’s wired-transfer instructions for the exact pair rather than assuming one cable works for every iPhone.

Check whether the new iPhone is organization-managed
Apple says Quick Start cannot transfer data from the current device to a new iPhone enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. If that applies, contact the organization’s administrator about the setup options available for that device. Apple’s Quick Start guidance describes this restriction.

Apple’s published Quick Start instructions provide a restart step for a setup prompt that disappears, but do not establish a universal remedy for a persistent frozen progress screen. If checking Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, proximity, and power does not resolve the issue, and the documented backup or wired alternatives are unsuitable or unsuccessful, contact Apple Support for help with the specific devices and setup state.
