Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If antivirus scans will not start or Task Manager is unavailable, treat it as a warning sign—not proof of malware. If Windows still opens and you can reach Windows Security, save your work and run Microsoft Defender Offline. If this is a work-managed computer, contact your IT or security team before trying recovery steps.
First, check what still works
Microsoft lists inability to start a virus scanner or system tools such as Task Manager as possible malware symptoms, but hardware or software problems can cause similar behavior. Microsoft Support’s malware-removal guidance puts it this way: “You cannot start your virus scanner or some system tools, including Task Manager.” The page’s path dates to 2017, so use it as symptom guidance, not as a guide to current Windows menus.

- Do not assume one blocked tool confirms an infection.
- Do not run commands copied from an untrusted popup or webpage.
- Check whether Windows starts and whether Windows Security opens. Those determine whether the built-in offline scan is available.
- On an organization-managed or business-critical device, involve IT or a qualified technician before broad recovery actions.
Run Microsoft Defender Offline if Windows Security opens
Defender Offline is Microsoft’s built-in option for persistent threats, including malware that hides while Windows is running or returns after a restart. Save open work first: starting the scan restarts the computer, and the scan runs outside the normal Windows session in the Windows Recovery Environment.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan and start the scan.
- Let the computer restart and complete the scan. When Windows starts again, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history to review results.
Labels can vary between Windows builds. See Microsoft’s Defender Offline instructions for scan behavior and results.

If a regular scan is slow or fails
A slow or unsuccessful scan does not necessarily mean malware is blocking it. Microsoft recommends checking available disk space, closing unnecessary applications, installing available Windows and protection updates, and then retrying. A drive with many files or large archives can take longer to scan; there is no single scan-time estimate that applies to every system.
- Check that the system drive has free space.
- Close applications you do not need during the scan.
- Install available Windows and protection updates, then try again.

Choose the next step based on what is happening
| Situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| Windows starts, Windows Security opens, and malware persists or returns after restart | Run Microsoft Defender Offline. Microsoft identifies recurring malware as a case where a hidden component may reinstall the threat. |
| A regular scan is slow or reports an error | Check disk space, close unnecessary applications, update Windows and protection components, then retry. |
| Windows Security or recovery tools cannot be accessed, or the device is business-critical | Contact Microsoft support or a qualified technician rather than trying unverified command-line fixes. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal recovery procedure for every inaccessible device. |
| Windows has irreversible damage and recovery is not viable | Consider reset or reinstall only after deciding how to preserve wanted files and restore a clean backup. |
Use reset or reinstall only as a later escalation
Resetting or reinstalling can remove software and change or erase data, so first identify files you need to keep and whether you have a backup made before the infection. Prefer a backup stored externally. Restore only from a backup you trust to predate the infection. A manual reinstall may require Windows installation media and setup files; a USB drive is a possible way to prepare that media on a working computer, not a malware-removal fix by itself. Follow Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for the available recovery paths.

After the device is clean
Install available Windows and protection updates, and avoid the site, download, or message that may have delivered the threat. Microsoft warns that reinfection can happen if the same malicious site is visited or the same threat is received again.

Why Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool is not the main fix
The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool targets specific prevalent threats; Microsoft points readers to Defender Offline or Microsoft Safety Scanner for more comprehensive detection and removal. It is therefore not a substitute for the offline scan when a persistent threat is suspected. Microsoft explains the tool’s scope and alternatives.
