To stop a normal Google Maps location share, open Google Maps, open your profile menu, choose Location sharing, select the person, and tap or click Stop. On Android, you can use Settings > Location > Location services > Google Location Sharing, select the person, and tap Stop. If the share still appears active, check every Google account and device that may be signed in, because Location Sharing is specific to both.
Stop the share with the recipient first
The per-person Stop command is the definitive way to end an existing Google Maps location share. A phone-wide switch can pause updates, but it does not remove individual shares. Use the route that matches the device or context where sharing was started.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial to open the profile menu.
- Tap Location sharing.
- Select the person who should no longer see your location.
- Tap Stop.
Return to Location sharing and check the same person if you need to confirm that the intended recipient is no longer selected for an active share.
Android
Android provides the in-app control as well as a documented system-settings route:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Tap Location services.
- Tap Google Location Sharing.
- Select the person.
- Tap Stop.
If you prefer to work in Maps, open the profile menu, choose Location sharing, select the recipient, and use Stop there.
Computer
On a computer, open Google Maps while signed in to the relevant Google account, open the Location sharing controls, find the person, and select Stop next to that person. The computer control ends that recipient’s share; it does not automatically change a different account or device.
Understand which control you are changing
Google exposes several location controls that sound similar but have different effects. Choosing the wrong one is a common reason a share seems impossible to turn off.

Check every Google account and device
Location Sharing is device- and account-specific. A setting changed on one phone does not necessarily change the same Google account on another phone, and a different signed-in account can have its own sharing state. This matters if you have an old phone, a tablet, a work profile, or more than one Google account.

- In Google Maps, verify the profile picture or initial belongs to the account you intend to manage.
- Open Location sharing and stop the share with the recipient.
- Repeat the check for every other Google account you use on that device.
- Repeat the stop action on each other device where those accounts are signed in.
- If you switched devices recently, check the previous device as well as the current one; the setting does not automatically become identical everywhere.
This account-and-device check is especially important when a recipient reports that updates continue after you tapped Stop. The remaining updates may be coming from another account/device combination rather than from the control you just changed.
Do not confuse Android’s master switch with ending a share
Android’s Use Location Sharing switch controls whether that device sends new real-time updates. Turning it off pauses updates, but it does not stop any of the shares already configured. The pause applies separately to each account on the device.
Use the switch for a temporary pause
If you only need a short break, turn Use Location Sharing off in Settings > Location > Location services > Google Location Sharing. Existing recipients remain configured, and they will not receive updated real-time positions until the setting is turned on again.
Use Stop for a permanent recipient change
If a person should no longer have access, select that person in the same screen and tap Stop. Do this for each recipient whose share should end. Turning the master switch back on later can resume configured shares, so it is not a substitute for removing them.

Check for trip-progress sharing during navigation
Google Maps can share progress for a particular journey separately from your normal Location Sharing list. This can make it look as if location sharing remains active even after you stopped a person’s regular share.
- While navigation is running, swipe up on the navigation information card.
- Choose Stop sharing.
- Confirm that the trip-progress control is no longer active.
Trip-progress sharing also ends when navigation stops or when you reach the destination. If the recipient is seeing your route, estimated arrival, or progress during an active journey, use this navigation-card control rather than the regular per-person setting.
Use device Location only as a broad fallback
Turning off the Android device’s overall Location setting prevents Google Maps from sharing the device’s location, but it affects much more than one recipient. Apps that need location access can stop working correctly, and other location-based functions may be disabled.

Notifications are not the share itself
Google Maps may send alerts related to location sharing. Disabling those notifications changes what you see on the device; it does not revoke another person’s access or stop location updates. Notifications stop automatically when the underlying share stops, so manage the recipient or trip-progress control first.
What to do when the share still appears active
Work through these checks in order so that each possible source is isolated:
- Stop the named recipient. In Maps or the Android Google Location Sharing screen, select the person and choose Stop.
- Check the account shown in Maps. Tap the profile picture or initial and make sure you are not managing a different Google account.
- Check other devices. Apply the same stop action on every device where the relevant account is signed in.
- Look for a navigation share. During active directions, open the navigation information card and choose Stop sharing.
- Separate pause from termination. If you used Use Location Sharing off, remember that the configured shares remain and can resume when the switch is enabled.
- Reserve the device Location switch for broad shutdowns. If you turn off device Location, expect unrelated apps and location features to lose access too.
- Ignore notification-only changes as a fix. Muting alerts does not change who can receive your location.
When Location Sharing is unavailable or controlled elsewhere
Google notes that Location Sharing may not be available for a supervised account, for some Google Workspace domains, or in some regions. In those cases, a parent or guardian may control the setting for a supervised account, while a Workspace administrator may control availability for an organization-managed account.

If the expected Location Sharing controls are missing, first identify whether the account is supervised or managed by an organization. A missing control in that situation may be an account policy rather than a Maps malfunction. The account administrator or parent/guardian may need to change the setting.
Choose the narrowest fix for your situation
One person should be removed
Open Location sharing, select that person, and use Stop. Do not rely on notification settings or the device-wide Location switch.
You want nobody to receive updates temporarily
On Android, turn off Use Location Sharing for the relevant account. Remember that this pauses updates and preserves the configured shares for later.
Someone can see an active journey
Open the navigation information card and choose Stop sharing. Ending regular Location Sharing does not describe this separate trip-progress control.

Turn off the device’s overall Location setting, accepting that Maps and other location-dependent features will also be affected.
The controls are missing
Check whether the account is supervised, belongs to a managed Workspace domain, or is in a region where the feature is unavailable. The relevant parent, guardian, or administrator may control access.

- The intended Google account is selected in Maps.
- The recipient’s entry was opened and Stop was used.
- Other signed-in accounts and devices were checked.

- If a control is unavailable, the account’s supervision, Workspace policy, or regional availability has been considered.
