If an Xbox disc’s digital licence will not activate, first check that you have a disc-drive console and an eligible game. Xbox’s published claim flow is to insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game. Not every disc qualifies, and an Xbox Series S cannot read discs. This disc-to-digital claim is also different from playing a backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox game, which still requires the disc in the drive.
First, identify which licence path you are using
A disc-to-digital claim is not the same as installing and playing a disc-based game. The newer claim feature can grant a limited digital licence for some supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. Ordinary backward-compatible play instead downloads a supported Xbox 360 or original Xbox game while requiring its disc in the drive during play.

For the claim feature, Xbox describes the action as inserting an eligible disc into a supported console and launching the game. Microsoft says the licence depends on continued possession of the qualifying disc, may need revalidation, and cannot be transferred separately from that disc. Microsoft’s Usage rules for Digital Goods explain that not all Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs are eligible.

| Console or case | Can read a physical disc? | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One with a disc drive | Yes | Xbox lists Xbox One consoles among the supported families for claiming eligible discs. Check the game’s eligibility, then insert the disc and launch the game. |
| Xbox Series X with a disc drive | Yes | Xbox lists Series X consoles among the supported families for claiming eligible discs. The qualifying disc remains tied to the licence. |
| Xbox Series S | No | Series S is digital-only and cannot perform a claim that requires inserting a physical disc. See Xbox’s Series S information. |
| Backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc | Requires a disc drive | Supported games download to the console, but the disc must remain in the drive to play. This does not establish eligibility for the newer disc-to-digital claim. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance. |
Try the published claim steps
- Confirm the model: use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive. A Series S cannot read the qualifying disc.
- Check the specific game and disc: eligibility is not universal. Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but some do not. Microsoft says eligibility can vary for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons, and may change as eligible discs are added or removed. Check Microsoft’s current usage rules and Xbox’s feature announcement.
- Insert the disc and launch the game: this is the claim action described in Xbox’s announcement. Follow any on-screen prompts presented by the console.
- Keep the qualifying disc: claiming the licence does not make the disc disposable. Microsoft says continued possession is a condition, the licence may need revalidation, and the entitlement cannot be transferred apart from the disc.
If the claim still fails
Do not assume that one error message has one universal cause. The exact game and edition, console model, whether the console recognizes the disc, account, region, disc condition, and network state can all matter, and the displayed error is not specified here. The official information establishes eligibility limits and the claim action, but not a general error-code-to-fix mapping.

If your console and disc appear to meet the requirements but the claim still does not work, record the full error text, game title and edition, console model, and whether the disc is recognized. Then contact Xbox Support with those details. Avoid account removal, a console reset, cache-clearing steps, or other workarounds unless Xbox gives instructions that match your specific error.

For supported Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, backward compatibility can download the game to a newer console, but Xbox says the physical disc must remain in the drive while you play. That rule is about playing a disc-based backward-compatible game; it is not evidence that an older disc can claim the newer disc-to-digital entitlement. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility page for supported games and details.
