Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Shut the PC down and disconnect its power before inspecting an RTX 5090 power connector that is unusually hot, discolored, deformed, or smells burnt. Do not keep gaming or run a stress test to see whether it happens again. If the GPU socket is discolored or melted, or the connector is stuck, leave the system off and contact the card maker or a qualified repair provider.
What to do immediately
- Stop using the PC. If there is no active smoke or immediate hazard, shut it down normally. If there is smoke or active burning, cut power by the safest available method and keep clear of the damaged connection. Do not run a load to reproduce the symptom.
- Unplug the PC from the wall. Wait until the system is off and disconnect its power cord before touching or inspecting the GPU cable. ASUS gives the same safety instruction before troubleshooting a GPU power warning: power off and unplug the system.
- Inspect without forcing anything. Look at the cable and connector at both ends, as well as the GPU socket. Check for brown or black discoloration, melted or misshapen plastic, bent or damaged pins, looseness, or other signs of overheating. ASUS specifically advises checking whether the cable is bent, deformed, or overheated and whether the GPU input is clean and its pins are intact.
Decide what to do based on where the damage is
| What you find | Next step |
|---|---|
| Cable is visibly bent, deformed, discolored, or overheated; GPU socket appears undamaged | Do not reuse the cable. Replace it only with a cable approved for the exact PSU model. If you cannot confirm compatibility, ask the PSU maker or a qualified service provider. |
| GPU socket is discolored, melted, or has damaged pins | Keep the PC unplugged. Do not power it on or attempt to repair the socket; contact the graphics-card maker or an authorized service provider. |
| Connector appears fused or stuck | Do not pull, pry, or force it apart. Leave the system disconnected and arrange manufacturer or qualified service. |
| No visible damage, but a GPU warning remains | Follow the instructions for the specific GPU and warning feature, then contact the manufacturer if the alert persists. Do not keep swapping cables or repeatedly use the PC to test it. |
ASUS says an overheated, bent, or deformed cable should be replaced and advises against low-quality or uncertified adapter cables. Its GPU Tweak III Power Detector+ guidance applies to that ASUS utility, not as a universal diagnostic procedure for every RTX 5090. For an alert that remains after its checks, ASUS directs users to its service center.

Reseat only an undamaged connector
If the cable, GPU socket, and pins all appear clean and undamaged, you can check the connection while the PC remains unplugged. Confirm the plug is fully inserted and latched, with no visible gap. ASUS says the connection should make a distinct click and that both ends of a bundled adapter should be firmly connected. Seasonic likewise instructs users of its 90-degree cable to ensure connectors are inserted, click-locked, and seated properly.
Do not bend or put force on the cable close to the connector after installation. Reseating is not a fix for discoloration, melting, damaged pins, or a warning that persists.

Use a PSU-compatible replacement cable
A 16-pin plug that looks similar is not proof that a modular PSU cable is compatible. Use a replacement approved by the power-supply manufacturer for the exact PSU model, and verify the match before connecting it. Seasonic’s compatibility information applies to its specified cable and PSU lines; it does not establish compatibility with other brands. Its recommendations and listed compatible series are available in the Seasonic 90° 12VHPWR cable guidance.
Do not assume a new cable or a different PSU will fix a damaged GPU socket. If the card-side connector shows damage, seek service rather than powering the card with another cable.

Where to get warranty or repair help
Contact the maker responsible for your specific graphics card. NVIDIA’s US warranty page covers Founders Edition cards and directs customers with a problem to NVIDIA Customer Care; partner-branded cards are covered by their add-in-board partner under the applicable terms. Warranty coverage and service routes vary by product and region. See NVIDIA’s US GeForce graphics-card warranty information or contact the card’s board partner.
If your card is an ASUS model, use ASUS support for a persistent ASUS GPU Tweak III Power Detector+ alert. For other brands, follow that manufacturer’s support and warranty process. Include the card model, PSU model, a description of what you saw, and clear photos of the disconnected cable and socket if the manufacturer requests them.
