If the checkout price is higher than the one you saw while browsing, pause before paying. Check that the item, seller, variant, promotion, delivery details and extra charges are the same, save evidence of both prices, then ask the seller to explain the difference or honor the earlier offer. Whether the seller must do so depends on your location and the details of the offer; a price change alone does not establish that the store broke the law.
Before you pay: identify and document the change
- Stop before submitting payment. Review the revised total and decide whether you are willing to proceed. If you do not accept it, do not place the order yet.
- Save evidence of both prices. Capture the product page, cart and checkout, including the item or model, seller, time, delivery destination, selected size or other variant, quantity, promotion or coupon, and the final amount. Keep any order confirmation and messages if you have already paid.
- Compare the offer details. Check whether the earlier price depended on a code, membership, quantity, delivery method, selected seller or limited-time promotion. Make sure the same item variant and seller are still selected.
- Separate the item price from the total. Look for tax, shipping, handling and selected add-ons. A higher checkout total does not necessarily mean the listed item price changed.
These records help establish what was displayed and what changed. A screenshot alone may not show every condition attached to an offer, so save the surrounding terms where possible.

Why an online checkout price may differ
Several explanations are possible: a promotion expired, an eligibility condition was not met, the selected variant or quantity changed, a different marketplace seller was chosen, the delivery location or method changed, or tax or shipping was added. The retailer may also have changed its price. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your transaction.
Dynamic pricing—the practice of changing prices over time or in response to market conditions—is not automatically unlawful in every context. The FTC says businesses may use dynamic pricing when pricing information is not misleading, but the FTC FAQ cited here addresses live-event tickets and short-term lodging, not all retail purchases. It does not guarantee that a price seen while browsing is locked for checkout. FTC: Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees FAQs.

Personalized pricing is a separate concern: FTC staff reported in 2025 that personal data such as location and browsing behavior could be used in individualized pricing. That market-study finding does not establish why a particular shopper saw a particular checkout price. In an August 2026 release, the FTC described a proposed enforcement policy statement concerning personalized pricing and said the agency could not ban it in all circumstances; the comment period ended September 18, 2026. The proposal’s later status is not established here, so it should not be treated as a final rule or proof that personal data caused an individual price change. Ask the seller to explain or adjust the price
Contact the retailer before paying, if possible. Send the saved records and ask which offer condition or charge caused the difference, and whether it will honor the earlier displayed price. Check the seller’s own price-match, pricing-error, cancellation and return policies.

The FTC advises consumers to check whether a seller has a price-matching policy and contact it to request a match. That is practical advice, not a promise that the retailer must agree. FTC: Price matching.
If the issue is an in-store scanner error rather than an online checkout, the FTC’s older scanner-price report offers analogous practical advice: point out the error promptly, ask about the retailer’s policy and seek an adjustment before paying. It is not an online legal rule. FTC: Price Checks and Scanner Accuracy.

What the rules say depends on where you shop
United States
Do not assume that every U.S. online store must honor any price shown on a browsing page. The FTC fee-rule FAQ discusses upfront total-price and final-payment disclosures for covered live-event tickets and short-term lodging, and says dynamic pricing may be used if it is not misleading. Whether a particular retail offer was deceptive, and what remedy might apply, depends on the exact representation, transaction and relevant federal or state law. FTC: Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees FAQs.
United Kingdom
UK government guidance says consumer law does not generally prohibit dynamic pricing. It also warns that a mismatch between an invitation-to-purchase price and the amount actually payable may infringe the law; its example is a price changed after an item is put in a basket and the consumer clicks through to checkout. This is UK-specific guidance, not a rule for shoppers everywhere. UK government: Guidance on price transparency.

The applicable consumer law and complaint route depend on your country and, in some places, your state or province. Without that information, it is not possible to name the relevant agency or say which remedy applies. Use the seller’s complaint process and consult the consumer-protection authority or advice service for your location.

Google Merchant Center instructs participating merchants to keep product prices consistent through checkout. That is a platform requirement for merchants; it is not itself a consumer-law remedy or proof that a shopper automatically gets the earlier price. Google Merchant Center: Price consistency.
Best Value
- show lowest price automatically
- save and load list for later on use
If you already paid or the seller will not resolve it
- Keep the order confirmation, screenshots, promotion terms and all correspondence.
- Use the seller’s complaint process and check its cancellation and return policies before taking the next step.
- If you cannot resolve the issue, contact the consumer-protection agency or advice service that handles complaints where you live.
When deciding what to do next, establish four facts: your location, what specifically changed, whether payment was submitted, and what the seller’s policies say about adjustments, cancellations, returns and pricing errors.
