1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf an e-way bill expires while a consignment is moving, stop further movement under that bill and have the transporter carrying the goods at expiry request an extension immediately. The NIC e-Way Bill System FAQ says goods covered by an expired bill are “not supposed to be moved.” The extension is for exceptional delays, not an automatic grace period; the portal describes a limited window around expiry, so act promptly and use the expiry shown on the bill.
What to do first when the bill expires in transit
- Check the bill. Confirm the e-way bill number and the validity expiry displayed in the system.
- Stop movement if it has expired. Do not continue transporting the goods under an expired bill. The NIC FAQ states that goods are not supposed to be moved once validity expires: NIC e-Way Bill System FAQ.
- Contact the transporter carrying the consignment at expiry. The portal guidance assigns the extension request to that transporter, who should use the extension facility as soon as possible.
- Submit accurate details. Provide the exceptional reason in detail, the goods’ current location, the approximate distance remaining, and the required Part B transport details. Do not state that an extension has been granted unless the system confirms it.
Who can request an extension, and what information is needed?
The transporter carrying the consignment when the bill expires can request the extension. Rule 138 allows a transporter to extend validity in exceptional circumstances, including trans-shipment, after updating Part B if required. The portal’s system documentation also identifies the current-transporter check, reason and detailed remarks, present location, remaining distance, and movement or warehouse status as relevant information: NIC e-Way Bill System Extend Validity API documentation.

- Reason: Explain the actual exceptional delay, such as a natural calamity, law-and-order issue, trans-shipment delay, accident, or vehicle breakdown. The FAQ asks for the reason in detail.
- Location and distance: Enter where the goods are now and the approximate distance left to the destination. The system API documentation says the remaining distance must not exceed the distance in the original e-way bill.
- Transport details: Update Part B information as required for the current movement. The extension facility does not permit changes to Part A.
- Movement status: For a breakdown, follow the portal process and accurately indicate whether the consignment is moving or at a location such as a warehouse.
How much time is available to extend the bill?
The portal FAQ describes the extension facility as available from eight hours before to eight hours after expiry. Rule 138’s proviso in the CBIC consolidated rules says an extension may be made within eight hours from expiry. Because those wordings are not identical, treat this as a limited window around expiry—not a general grace period—and act immediately. Check the facility and the current applicable rule text in the official system: CBIC, CGST Rules, 2017, Part A.
What counts as an exceptional delay?
The portal FAQ gives examples including natural calamity, law-and-order problems, delay in trans-shipment, and an accident or vehicle breakdown. The transporter should describe what actually happened and where the goods are; a routine delay should not be presented as an exceptional event. The extension facility is a request process, so submitting details does not itself establish that an extension has been approved.

Should you cancel or generate another e-way bill?
Cancellation is not a general workaround for an expired bill. The rules say an e-way bill that has been verified in transit cannot be cancelled, and the extension facility does not allow Part A to be changed. Do not assume that creating a duplicate bill will cure the expired bill or authorize continued movement. If the portal does not offer the extension or the shipment details need correction, consult current portal guidance or a qualified GST professional before moving the goods.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why you should rely on the bill’s displayed expiry, not an old distance example
Validity ordinarily depends on distance and transport category, but official materials have differing wording for regular conveyance. The NIC FAQ states one day for every 100 km or part thereof for regular transport and one day for every 20 km or part thereof for over-dimensional cargo (ODC). The CBIC consolidated rules copy includes a later amendment stating one day up to 200 km for ordinary regular conveyance and one additional day for each further 200 km or part, alongside a distinct ODC and multimodal table. Do not treat the FAQ’s 100 km figure as the current rule without checking the applicable amended rule. For an in-transit problem, use the specific bill’s displayed expiry and confirm current requirements in the portal and rules.
