If an app stops working after a Google Play system update, first restart your phone, check for Android and app updates, and try app-level fixes before clearing data or changing Google Play services. The timing alone does not prove the system update caused the problem. Start by checking whether one app or several are affected, then choose the least disruptive steps that fit.
First, check what is affected and what updated
Note the exact symptom: does the app crash, refuse to open, freeze, stop responding, or fail only in one feature? Check whether the problem affects one app or several. That distinction helps decide whether to focus on the app or investigate the phone more broadly.

To check the update details, open Settings → About phone or About tablet, then find Android version. The screen can show the Android version, security update status, and Google Play system update status. Labels and paths vary by device; Google’s instructions for checking Android version and update status cover the general route. These details confirm what the phone reports, but they cannot establish that the update caused the app problem.
Try the low-risk fixes first
- Restart the phone. Reopen the affected app and check whether the symptom remains.
- Check for Android system updates. Open the system update page in Settings; its location and label vary by phone.
- Update the app. In Google Play, open Manage apps & devices and install an available update for the affected app.
- Force stop and reopen the app. In Settings, open the app’s information page, choose Force stop, then launch it again. Menu labels can vary by device.
Google Play Help recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step to check whether it resolved the problem. Its app troubleshooting guide includes these checks and additional options.

Clear app cache before considering app data
Clear cache
If the app still fails, open its information page in Settings, choose Storage or Storage & cache, then select Clear cache. This removes temporary files; it does not have the same consequences as clearing the app’s stored data. A cache-related improvement may be temporary because cached files can build up again.
Clear data or storage only after checking recovery
Clear data or Clear storage can erase information saved by the app, such as local settings or content that has not synced. Before using it, confirm that the app syncs the information you need or offers a recovery method, and make sure you can sign back in. The exact setting name varies by phone and Android version.

Use reinstalling or time sync only with care
If the app remains broken, Google’s troubleshooting guide also describes syncing the device’s date and time with Google’s time servers and uninstalling then reinstalling the app where possible. Reinstalling can erase saved app data, so check the app’s backup and recovery options first. Google notes that uninstalling does not work for Pixel essential apps. If the app cannot be uninstalled or its data matters, avoid forcing this step.
Do not make Google Play services the first target
Google Play services is a separate Android component that connects apps to Google services; it is not the Google Play Store app. Google describes it as “included with Android” in its Google Play services guidance.

Check whether Google Play services is up to date, but do not begin by clearing its storage or data to fix one app. Google advises trying other options first: clearing Play services storage may remove saved information and require you to sign in again or reauthenticate payment methods. The guidance also distinguishes clearing its cache from clearing its data.

If only one app is still affected
After the app-level checks, contact the app’s developer. Explain the symptom, when it began, your phone model and Android version, and the update status shown in Settings. The developer is the appropriate contact for a problem confined to its app.

If several apps or the phone are unstable
Look for broader device issues, including available storage and system updates. Google’s Android device troubleshooting guide covers device-level checks and safe mode. Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps and can help distinguish a downloaded-app issue from a broader problem, but the steps to enter it vary by manufacturer. Follow your phone maker’s instructions, and contact its support for device-specific guidance.
