Connect to Wi-Fi, charge the device to at least 75%, and follow the on-screen instructions. Menu names and update schedules vary by manufacturer and carrier, so a missing update is not always a fault with your phone.
Check the update status and prepare the device
- Open Settings and look for System > Software updates. Some devices put the update option under About phone or About tablet; labels vary by manufacturer.
- Read the status message and follow the instructions shown for your device. A notice that the device is up to date or not eligible is different from a download or installation error.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the device to at least 75% before trying again. Google Android Help recommends this preparation; it is not a guarantee that an update will work or a universal minimum charge enforced by every device. A compatible phone charger can help you meet the charge recommendation, but it will not diagnose or repair an update error.
Android system updates can be large and take time. If the status is still progressing, leave the device connected rather than repeatedly starting over.

If the update will not start or the download stalls
First check whether the Wi-Fi connection itself works: open a webpage or test the same network with another device. If the connection is unreliable, try these basic checks:

- Restart the phone or tablet, then check the update status again.
- If Wi-Fi problems continue, set date and time to update automatically; Google notes that an incorrect date or time can interfere with Wi-Fi connectivity.
If the download started but did not finish, Google says the device will automatically try again over the next few days and send a notification. That is not an immediate retry guarantee. When the notification appears, open it and tap the update action, or return to Settings to check the status.

If the device says there is not enough space
Check Settings > Storage and review which categories are using space. Remove or move files you no longer need, using your device’s storage tools. Pixel guidance also recommends reviewing storage categories to identify what can be freed. Avoid deleting unfamiliar system files.
There is no universal free-space figure established here for every Android system update. Google Play Help’s low-storage indicator of less than 1 GB concerns app downloads, not a general Android system-update requirement. If clearing space does not resolve the message, follow the device’s own instructions or contact its manufacturer or carrier.

If the download finished but the update has not taken effect
A completed download may still need installation or a restart. Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet install downloaded Android updates in the background; the update becomes active after the next restart. Many other Android devices restart automatically during installation.
Follow the restart prompt and let an installation visibly in progress finish. Do not interrupt the device while it is installing.

If no update is offered
Update availability depends on the device, its manufacturer, and sometimes the carrier. A phone that reports it is up to date may simply not have received an eligible update yet. Google says Pixel updates can take a few weeks to arrive, depending on the carrier and device; that is an estimate, not a promised delivery date.
For Pixel 8 and later phones, Google states that software updates are provided for seven years from the device’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. This specific commitment does not establish the update period for other Pixel models, Android devices, or regions.

Google also cautions that “Older devices can’t always run newer Android versions.” If your device is unsupported or has no eligible update, check the manufacturer’s or carrier’s update schedule rather than repeatedly retrying the same check.

When to contact support—and what not to try first
Contact the phone manufacturer or carrier if the device becomes unstable, or if the same specific error persists after the basic checks. Share the exact model, carrier, and error message so support can give instructions for that device. Steps differ across Android devices; safe mode may help diagnose broader problems caused by a downloaded app, but it is not a universal system-update repair.

Treat a factory reset as a last resort, and do it only if device-specific support recommends it. Google warns that a factory reset removes data, so back up important information first. Sideloading firmware, unlocking the bootloader, and using unofficial flashing tools are not routine consumer fixes for a failed update.
