What to Do If an AI-Generated News Article Contains False Information

Pause before sharing an AI-generated news article that may contain false information. Check its claims against original evidence, then contact the publisher and report the post where it appears.

Pause before sharing it. Check the disputed claim against original records and independent reporting, then ask the publisher to correct it and report the post on the platform where you found it. An AI label alone does not prove a story is false; the evidence for each factual claim does.

Check the claim before you share the article

Save the article’s URL and note the exact sentence you doubt. Separate verifiable claims—such as a date, quotation, statistic or event—from opinion or interpretation. Check the publication date and whether the article relies on an older report, image or statement presented without its original context.

Then trace the claim as close as possible to its source. Look for an original document, official data, a full speech or a direct statement. Compare what the source actually says with the article’s wording, and check that figures, dates and quotations have not been altered or taken out of context. The UK House of Commons Library recommends checking factual claims against primary or authoritative sources and seeking independent confirmation: Working with AI and spotting AI-generated text.

Use other reporting as corroboration

Check whether reputable outlets report the same facts and whether their reporting is independently sourced, rather than repeating the same original claim. Government guidance also recommends checking source credibility, context and recency before sharing: Government of Canada guidance on detecting and reporting disinformation.

Look for an existing fact-check

Search the key claim, not just the article headline, in a fact-checking service. The Canadian government lists AFP Fact Check and Snopes among services readers can consult. Treat a fact-check as a useful lead: read its explanation and inspect the evidence it cites, especially if the claim or circumstances have changed since it was published.

Ask the publisher to correct a false claim

If the evidence shows a factual error, contact the outlet that published the article. Provide the article URL, quote the exact passage, explain what is wrong, and link to the strongest supporting evidence. Ask for a visible correction or update so readers can tell what changed. Keep your message specific and factual; distinguish a demonstrable error from a disagreement over opinion or emphasis.

For articles distributed through Apple News, Apple’s publisher guidance says publishers are responsible for accuracy, including third-party and AI-generated material, and expects errors to be corrected in a timely and transparent manner: AI-generated content in Apple News. That is Apple’s distribution standard; it does not guarantee that every publisher will respond or correct an article.

Report the post on the platform, too

If the article is circulating on a social network, news app or other service, use that service’s report function for false or misleading content, when available. Include the relevant link or claim and evidence if the form allows it. Reporting the post and requesting a correction are separate steps: a platform report flags distribution to the service, while a correction request goes to the publisher that can amend the article. Reporting procedures and outcomes vary, and a report does not guarantee removal. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Government of Canada both advise readers to report suspected misinformation through appropriate channels: Indiana DHS misinformation guidance and Canadian guidance.

If you already shared it, correct your own post

Update or follow up on your post with a clear statement of what was wrong and a link to the evidence or the publisher’s correction. If the platform permits, remove or edit the original so the inaccurate claim is less likely to keep circulating. Keep the correction proportionate: identify the specific error rather than suggesting the entire article is false if only one claim has been disproved.

What an AI label does—and does not—tell you

AI authorship is a reason to verify, not evidence that a statement is false. The same claim-by-claim checks apply whether a story was written by a person, generated by AI, or produced with both. Editorial standards make verification the publisher’s responsibility: Reuters states, “All facts, sources and claims generated by AI must be independently verified and fact-checked by Reuters journalists.” Reuters Journalistic Standards.

There is evidence that AI systems can misrepresent news, but one widely reported figure is often easy to misread. In a 2025 study coordinated by the European Broadcasting Union and led by the BBC, journalists from 22 public-service media organizations in 18 countries and 14 languages evaluated more than 3,000 responses from four AI assistants. The EBU reported that 45% of those evaluated assistant responses misrepresented news content. That result concerns AI assistant responses assessed in that study—not the percentage of AI-generated news articles that contain falsehoods. European Broadcasting Union study.

Rules and remedies depend on where you are

Guidance on checking and reporting information is available from authorities in several countries, but platform processes, publisher standards and legal duties differ by location and service. Do not assume that a report will remove a post or that a publisher is legally required to make a particular correction. In the EU, the European Commission said on 20 July 2026 that AI Act transparency obligations start applying on 2 August 2026, including specified disclosure duties for deepfakes and some AI-generated public-interest content without human review or editorial control. Whether a particular article falls within an obligation depends on the law’s scope and the facts: European Commission guidance on AI transparency obligations.
