Don’t act on consequential chatbot advice until you’ve checked it. Verify the claim with an authoritative source, ask a qualified person when health, legal, financial, or safety decisions are involved, and report the response to the chatbot provider. If you’ve already sent money or shared sensitive information, contact the relevant bank, payment service, or institution directly and start its recovery process.
First, decide whether the advice could cause immediate harm
A chatbot can sound certain and still be wrong. OpenAI says ChatGPT may produce incorrect or misleading answers, including fabricated quotes, studies, citations, and references; confidence is not a reliable signal of accuracy. Its guidance is to use ChatGPT as a first draft, not a final source.

Pause before following advice about medication, symptoms, personal safety, legal deadlines, debt, investments, or payments. If someone is in immediate danger or a health problem may be time-critical, contact local emergency services or a qualified clinician rather than asking a chatbot to resolve it.

- Isolate the consequential claim. Identify the specific instruction, fact, deadline, dosage, payment detail, or policy that could change what you do.
- Check a primary source. Use the relevant government agency or regulator, institution’s official website, original document or study, or a qualified professional. For an account or transaction, contact the responsible institution through a channel you already know is genuine.
- Inspect citations yourself. Open any link the chatbot provides and confirm that the source exists and supports the exact claim. A citation is a lead to check, not proof; OpenAI notes that references and descriptions of external material can be wrong.
For a suspicious message or possible scam, do not call a number or click a link supplied by that message. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends using a website or phone number you already know is trustworthy and resisting pressure to act immediately: FTC advice on avoiding scams.

Bring high-stakes questions to a qualified person
For medical, legal, financial, or other professional decisions, use the chatbot’s answer as context for a qualified professional or the institution responsible for the matter—not as a substitute for them. Google’s Gemini guidance specifically says, “Don’t rely on responses from Gemini Apps as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice”: Gemini Apps privacy and safety.
This also matters when the chatbot belongs to a company you need help from. A Consumer Financial Protection Bureau report describes some consumer-finance interactions that leave people in repetitive automated exchanges without a meaningful route to human assistance. If a chatbot cannot resolve a banking, debt, payment, or rights issue, contact the financial institution through a known channel and ask for a person or qualified adviser: CFPB report on chatbots in consumer finance.

Report the inaccurate or unsafe answer
Reporting can alert the provider to a problem, but it does not verify the answer or fix any harm already done. Routes differ by product and may change; use the provider’s current help page if the controls are different.
- ChatGPT: On web or mobile, tap the thumbs-down icon beneath the message, select an issue, choose “Safety or Legal concern,” and follow the prompts. OpenAI also provides a content-reporting webform.
- Gemini: Use thumbs-down feedback on the inaccurate or unsafe response and provide feedback. Google describes this as a way to report response issues in its Gemini Apps guidance and feedback instructions.
These examples apply to ChatGPT and Gemini; there is no single reporting route established here for every chatbot. Google also says Gemini responses do not represent Google’s views and should not be attributed to Google. That attribution statement is specific to Gemini.

If money or personal information is already at risk, act on that separately
If chatbot advice led you toward a suspected scam or you have already paid, stop any further payments and promptly contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, wire-transfer company, or other payment provider using a trusted contact method. Ask whether the transaction can be reversed or refunded. The FTC advises taking these steps quickly, but recovery is not guaranteed and depends on the payment method and circumstances: FTC guidance on what to do if you were scammed.
U.S. readers can report a scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC’s reporting and recovery guidance is U.S.-specific; readers elsewhere should contact their country’s consumer-protection or fraud-reporting agency. If you shared account credentials or identity details, contact the affected institution through its official channel and follow its account-security or identity-recovery steps.
