If a completed UPI payment went to the wrong person, contact the bank account you paid from immediately through the transaction’s help option in your app or the bank’s official grievance channel. Give the bank the transaction reference or RRN, date, amount and recipient details shown, and ask it to register and investigate a wrong-credit complaint. Keep the complaint reference. NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped, so recovery is not guaranteed.
First, check whether the payment is completed, pending or failed
Open the transaction in the app you used and check its status before making a complaint. Save a screenshot or statement entry, and note the transaction reference or RRN, date and time, amount, and recipient identifier displayed. NPCI’s complaint form asks for details including the transaction number/RRN, date, bank and amount.

- Completed and sent to the wrong person: Treat this as a wrong-credit complaint and contact your sending bank.
- Pending or failed: Ask the bank to trace the payment and check the applicable status or failed-transaction reversal process. A pending or failed payment is not the same as a completed payment credited to an unintended recipient.
NPCI explains that failed transactions may be reversed and some pending payments may take time. Those processes do not promise reversal of a completed, authorized payment sent to the wrong recipient. See NPCI’s UPI FAQs.
How to complain about a wrong UPI transfer
- Start with the sending bank. Use the transaction-specific help or complaint option in the payment app, then contact the sending bank through an official customer-care or grievance channel if needed. State clearly that the transaction was completed but went to an unintended recipient.
- Ask the bank to register a wrong-credit complaint. Request its investigation and recovery process. Provide the RRN or transaction reference, transaction date, amount, recipient details shown, and any other information the bank requests.
- Keep a record. Save the complaint reference and date, along with your transaction evidence and any messages from the bank. Use official app or bank channels for follow-up.
NPCI says users can raise a UPI grievance or check its status through the UPI app of participating banks. The key point is to contact the institution that holds the sending account: NPCI’s complaint form routes eligible complaints to the relevant member institution, which is responsible for resolution. Check the live form for current fields and eligibility; these can vary by product or complaint category.
Can a UPI payment to the wrong UPI ID be reversed?
There is no general stop-payment option once a UPI payment has been initiated. NPCI’s UPI FAQ states: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” That means you should ask your bank to investigate and explain the available recovery process, not assume the transfer can be recalled or that a refund will arrive by a particular deadline.
The public guidance does not establish a universal recovery time or guaranteed outcome for a completed, authorized payment sent to the wrong person. The bank can investigate the complaint, but whether funds can be recovered depends on the circumstances and institutions involved. Guidance and turnaround procedures for failed payments or institution-to-institution disputes are not a consumer guarantee that a mistaken transfer will be returned.

When to use NPCI’s complaint form
You can check NPCI’s Register a Complaint route for a UPI transaction complaint. The form requests transaction information such as the RRN, date, bank and amount, and says the relevant member institution is responsible for resolving the matter. Follow the current form’s instructions rather than relying on a fixed eligibility threshold.

When can you escalate to the RBI Ombudsman?
First complain to the bank or other regulated entity. If it has not replied within 30 days, or you are dissatisfied with its response, you may be able to escalate a service complaint through the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, subject to the scheme’s eligibility and maintainability requirements. The RBI’s scheme notification sets out its scope. The Ombudsman process addresses a complaint about a regulated entity’s service; it does not guarantee recovery of money from the unintended recipient.

- Never share your UPI PIN. NPCI’s FAQ says: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” The PIN authorizes transactions.
- Do not approve an unfamiliar request-money or collect instruction as a way to receive a refund. RBI’s CMS page warns against responding to unknown request-money options.
- Use contact details in the official app or on your bank’s official website, and keep the transaction evidence and complaint reference for follow-up.
Changing to another UPI app does not reverse a transfer. For a completed wrong-recipient payment, the practical route is a complaint to the sending bank, with transaction details the bank can use to investigate.
