If a product you test is defective, damaged, or otherwise needs to go back, start with the seller’s return policy and deadline. Save your receipt, warranty, and messages; tell the seller what failed and what remedy you want. If the return window has closed or the seller does not resolve the problem, check the manufacturer’s warranty and its claim process. There is no universal U.S. return period or guaranteed refund: store policies, warranty terms, and state law vary.
First, distinguish a return from a warranty claim
A seller’s return policy explains what the store will accept, by when, and under what conditions. It may cover ordinary change-of-mind returns as well as defective or damaged items, but its terms differ from seller to seller. The Federal Trade Commission advises checking the policy on the receipt, packaging, warranty, or seller’s website; examples such as 30- or 90-day deadlines are not nationwide legal rules. The FTC’s returns guidance explains that some stores limit ordinary returns or direct customers to the manufacturer for defective goods after the store’s deadline.

A warranty is a separate promise with its own coverage, exclusions, duration, and claim procedure. Depending on its terms, it may provide a repair, replacement, or refund, and it may limit covered failures or costs. A warranty does not automatically mean an immediate refund. Read the written terms before deciding which route applies. The FTC’s warranty guide also distinguishes a manufacturer’s included warranty from a separately purchased service contract.
If the seller’s return window is still open
- Read the policy before returning the item. Check the deadline, whether the seller offers a refund, exchange, repair, or store credit, and whether it requires the product, packaging, or other information.
- Ask how to return it. Confirm whether to bring it in or mail it, who pays shipping, and what documentation is needed. For a valuable or potentially unsafe product, ask the seller what to do before mailing or continuing to handle it.
- Make a direct, documented request. Explain what is wrong and state the outcome you want. Keep a dated record of conversations, forms, and messages.
Gather the receipt or order record, product model or serial number, warranty, and any relevant correspondence. The seller’s policy—not a universal deadline—determines the available return procedure.

If the seller’s deadline has passed or it declines
Check the warranty for its coverage period, covered parts and failures, exclusions, claim contact, shipping or labor charges, and promised remedy. Keep a copy of the warranty and proof of purchase. Contact the seller first; if it does not resolve the defect, the FTC advises writing to the manufacturer. Follow the warranty’s directions about whom to contact and how to submit a claim.
Warranty terms do not necessarily allow a company to require a particular brand’s parts or services as a condition of keeping coverage. The FTC says a warrantor generally cannot impose such a requirement unless it provides the parts or services free or obtains an FTC waiver. The specific facts and applicable law matter. In July 2024, FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said of the agency’s warning letters, “These warning letters put companies on notice that restricting consumers’ right to repair violates the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.” That statement describes the warning letters; it is not a court ruling on every warranty dispute. How to make a product warranty claim
When you compare warranty options—or prepare a claim—look beyond the length of coverage. These are the terms the FTC recommends consumers examine:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- How long coverage lasts and when it starts.
- Which parts and failures are covered, and what exclusions apply.
- Whether the promised remedy is repair, replacement, refund, or another option.
- Who handles the claim and whether you must contact the seller first.
- Whether shipping, labor, or diagnostic costs fall to you.
- Whether maintenance, use conditions, or product registration affect coverage.
- Whether separately purchased extended coverage duplicates the included warranty.
For the claim, state the product name and model or serial number, purchase date and place, what failed, what steps you have already taken, and the remedy you are requesting. Attach copies of relevant records and keep the originals.

If the company still does not resolve the problem
Send a concise written complaint to the company that includes the details above and copies of your records. If it remains unresponsive, USAGov recommends looking to the relevant local or state consumer protection office or state attorney general. The right channel can depend on the product and type of complaint. For an online purchase from a seller outside the United States, USAGov’s online-purchase guidance lists econsumer.gov.
You can also report a problem to the FTC, but understand what that does: the agency says reports help it identify patterns and may inform enforcement; it does not resolve an individual complaint or obtain an individual refund. See the FTC’s guidance on resolving business problems and USAGov’s complaint guidance.
