What to Do if a Plug-In Solar Panel Keeps Tripping Your Circuit Breaker

A repeatedly tripping breaker is a reason to stop using a plug-in solar system—not to keep resetting it. Here are the safe next steps and what to tell a professional.

If a plug-in solar panel repeatedly trips a circuit breaker or another protective device, stop using it and contact the installer or supplier. Don’t keep resetting the breaker, open the electrical panel, or try to repair the system yourself. A trip signals that a protective device has detected a problem; it does not identify the cause.

What to do right now

  1. Stop using the solar system. Do not repeatedly reset the breaker or other protective device to keep it running. Repeated trips need assessment by a qualified professional. Electrical Safety First’s plug-in solar guidance advises consumers to follow safety precautions and seek appropriate help.
  2. Look for urgent warning signs without touching the equipment. Smoke, fire, a burning smell, unusual heat, buzzing or crackling, visible damage, or another trip are reasons to keep away from the suspected equipment. For fire or immediate danger in the UK, call 999 and tell responders solar panels are present. Elsewhere, use your local emergency number. UK fire and emergency advice does not replace the emergency guidance for other countries.
  3. Contact the installer or supplier. Explain which device trips, when it happens, and whether you noticed heat, odor, sound or visible damage. Ask them to check the product and its instructions. If the problem recurs or the cause is not clear, have a qualified electrician assess the home circuit and protective devices.
  4. Disconnect only if you can do so safely and the manual explains how. Do not touch damaged wires, connectors or exposed plug pins. A solar panel may still generate electricity in daylight even if the system is switched off indoors.

What a tripping breaker does—and does not—tell you

A breaker can trip when it detects a condition such as overload, short circuit, arc fault or ground fault. The trip alone does not tell you which one occurred. Frequent trips can point to a problem with the circuit or a connected device; ABB recommends having a licensed electrician troubleshoot frequent tripping.

Plug-in photovoltaic (PV) systems feed electricity back into existing branch circuits. That interaction can raise safety questions involving overcurrent protection, electric shock protection and, in the United States, GFCI compatibility. UL Solutions discusses these potential system-level concerns; they are not a diagnosis of your particular panel, circuit or breaker.

Do not treat a breaker trip as proof that the solar unit is defective, or as proof that replacing the breaker will fix the issue. A qualified professional may need to inspect the solar equipment, circuit and protective devices to find the cause.

What not to do

  • Do not keep resetting the breaker or another protective device to run the solar system.
  • Do not open the electrical panel, alter wiring, or repair or replace the cable, plug, inverter, breaker or RCD yourself.
  • Do not connect the system through an extension lead, adapter, cable reel or multiway socket.
  • Do not handle damaged wiring, connectors or exposed plug pins. Disconnect the system only as directed by its manual and only when safe.

Why the right advice depends on your location and installation

Protective-device requirements and product-safety rules differ by country. In the UK, Electrical Safety First advises at least a Type A bidirectional RCD on circuits intended for plug-in solar, and recommends that a competent electrician assess older or uncertain installations. This is UK charity guidance, not a substitute for local electrical rules or the manufacturer’s instructions.

The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero published a study on 16 June 2026 that found representative plug-in PV systems operated safely within the conditions tested, with protective devices operating effectively and no sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects. The study also reported variation in product performance and recommended product requirements and consumer guidance. Those findings do not establish that a particular home, product or breaker is suitable. Read the government study and its scope.

In the United States, UL Solutions has described concerns including backfeed interaction and GFCI compatibility; its article said UL 3700, an Outline of Investigation for Interactive Plug-In PV Equipment and Systems, was under development when the page was reviewed. UK guidance and test findings should not be applied as a universal determination of safety or code compliance.

  • The type and condition of the circuit’s breaker and RCD/GFCI, and the applicable rules for your country.
  • Whether the circuit also trips when the solar system is disconnected, if this can be established safely.
  • Any signs of heat, damage or moisture, and when they appeared.

Do not carry out electrical tests or disconnect damaged equipment to answer these questions yourself. Give the information to the professional handling the inspection.

What safety evidence says

Safety assessments address particular products, protective devices, jurisdictions and test conditions; they do not settle the condition of every home installation. Luke Osborne, Technical Director at Electrical Safety First, said: “Plug-in solar panels send electricity in the opposite direction in your property’s wiring. Whilst many modern homes may be able to enjoy this technology safely, we still have concerns plug-in solar panels may damage older devices in people’s homes which protect people from electric shock, known as RCDs.” This is the view of a named safety organization, not a regulator’s determination. The UK government study’s findings apply to representative systems under its tested conditions, not to a specific reader’s setup.
