If a Matter accessory’s firmware update appears stuck in Apple Home, first note the exact status, then check the accessory maker’s app and instructions. “Requested” can mean the home hub is waiting to transfer the firmware; it does not by itself mean the accessory is broken. Check communication and restart only the affected devices as needed. Reset or remove the accessory only if its manufacturer’s instructions call for it.
What “Requested” means in Apple Home
Apple’s developer-oriented Apple Matter OTA User Guide describes a manual update sequence as Update → Requested → Installing. In that workflow, “Requested” means the home hub is waiting to transfer firmware to the accessory. The connected primary home hub acts as the OTA provider, supplying the firmware.

That status alone does not show that an accessory is bricked or that it needs a reset. Apple does not give a universal consumer cutoff for when a pending transfer should be considered stuck. The guide’s timing estimates—notification within 24 hours and a recommendation to allow up to 48 hours for installation—apply to its TestNet developer-testing workflow using the default OTA requestor, not to all consumer Matter updates.
Work through these checks in order
-
Record what is happening
Note the exact Home app status, such as Requested or Installing; the accessory’s maker and model; its firmware version if visible; and whether it still responds in Apple Home and the maker’s app. A status that has not changed immediately is not, by itself, proof of failure.

Check the manufacturer’s update route
Open the maker’s app and consult the manual or support page for the exact model. Apple Support recommends checking the manufacturer’s app to see whether an accessory needs a firmware update. Follow the maker’s instructions: some accessories may use Apple Home for updates, while others specify the manufacturer’s app. Matter branding alone does not identify the update or recovery procedure.
-
Check basic communication if the accessory is unresponsive
Apple’s consumer guidance for an unresponsive accessory recommends turning on Bluetooth on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac used to control the home, then restarting the affected accessory. Check whether it responds after each step before moving on.

Check shared hub or network symptoms
If the accessory or multiple accessories are unresponsive, Apple recommends restarting third-party bridges and home hubs. For wider connectivity failures, its troubleshooting sequence also checks that the controlling device is on the same Wi-Fi network, restarts the router and hubs, and considers whether a VPN or third-party security software is affecting connectivity. These steps address communication symptoms; they are not required for every firmware transfer.

Give a Thread accessory time to reconnect
For a third-party Thread accessory that is unresponsive, Apple’s procedure is to disconnect its power for five minutes, reconnect it, then wait ten minutes for Thread to stabilise. These timings are part of Apple’s unresponsive-accessory troubleshooting, not a general Matter update timer.

Use reset or removal instructions only when appropriate
A slow or unchanged update status alone is not a reason to factory-reset or remove an accessory. If it is also unresponsive in the maker’s app, or must be removed and added again, follow the manufacturer’s exact reset and re-add instructions. The steps are model-specific and may require setting up the accessory again.
Decide whether the problem is local or shared
| What you see | Where to focus |
|---|---|
| One accessory or one maker’s devices are affected | Check that maker’s app and model instructions; restart the affected accessory and its bridge if applicable; contact the maker if it remains unresponsive. |
| Accessories from several makers fail together | Check the controlling Apple device and shared home-network connectivity. Apple’s guidance includes reopening Home, checking same-Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, restarting accessories, hubs, and router, and reviewing VPN or third-party security software. |
When and how to ask for support
For an issue affecting one accessory or brand, contact its manufacturer first. Include the model, firmware version if available, exact Home app status, whether it responds in the maker’s app, whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread if known, and the steps you have already tried. Apple advises contacting the manufacturer when an accessory remains unresponsive. If multiple makers’ accessories fail together after the shared connectivity checks, contact Apple Support.

Apple TV and HomePod can serve as primary hubs in Apple’s documented Matter OTA provider workflow. That describes a hub’s role; it does not establish that buying a hub will fix an update already stalled. Apple’s general consumer troubleshooting does not name one universal recovery action for a pending Matter OTA transfer, so use the accessory maker’s model-specific advice for the next step.
