What should I do if my loved one with Alzheimer’s wanders? Start searching immediately. Check nearby areas and places they know; if you have not found them within 15 minutes, call 911 and report a missing person. Tell responders the person has Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and is a “vulnerable adult.” Keep searching while you follow emergency responders’ instructions. The 15-minute mark is an escalation point in Alzheimer’s Association guidance, not a reason to wait if you believe immediate help is needed.

What to do when someone with dementia is missing

  1. Begin searching right away. Look nearby, including less-traveled areas, and check places the person has visited before. Ask others to help if available.
  2. Call 911 if they are not found within 15 minutes. Report a missing person and tell the dispatcher and responding officers that the person has Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Identify them as a vulnerable adult. Call sooner if circumstances indicate an immediate emergency.
  3. Keep searching and coordinate with responders. Share the person’s recent photo, medical information, likely destinations, and any nearby hazards. Follow instructions from police and emergency personnel.

The Alzheimer’s Association says many people who wander are found within 1.5 miles of where they disappeared. Its separate emergency guidance says most are found within a half mile of home or their starting location. These are distinct estimates on separate Association pages, neither identifies an estimate’s source year, and neither is a boundary for your search or a reason to delay calling 911. The emergency page also says that if a person is not found within 24 hours, up to half may suffer serious injury or death; do not wait for that point to seek help.

Prepare before an incident

Make essential information easy to share

  • Keep a recent, close-up photo and current medical information ready for police.
  • Write down places the person may go, such as former homes or workplaces, places of worship, favorite restaurants, and other familiar destinations.
  • Note hazards near those places, including ponds, busy roads, tunnels, or dense foliage.
  • Ask neighbors, friends, and family to contact you if they see the person alone, lost, or dressed inappropriately. Tell local police about the person’s tendency to wander.

Consider identification and response resources

A medical ID bracelet can carry the person’s name and a caregiver’s phone number. If the person may remove a bracelet, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) suggests labeling clothing. NIA also names MedicAlert + Alzheimer’s Association Safe and Found as a possible wandering-response service; a charge may apply, so check its current fees, terms, and local availability with the provider.

How to reduce wandering risk while respecting safety and dignity

The Alzheimer’s Association says people living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia can wander at any stage. Possible warning signs include returning later than usual from a regular walk or drive, forgetting familiar routes, saying they need to go home while already there, pacing or repeating movements, or appearing lost in a new or changed setting. Its page, accessed in 2026, says six in 10 people living with dementia will wander at least once and that many wander repeatedly; the page does not state a publication year for that figure.

Adjust routines and support

  • Offer meaningful activities and a predictable routine, especially at times when restlessness tends to occur.
  • Check basic needs such as toileting, food, and hydration. Reassure the person if they seem lost or disoriented.
  • Adapt outings and supervision to how the person responds to unfamiliar settings.
  • If the person can no longer drive safely, remove access to car keys. If they can still drive safely, the Association suggests considering GPS support.
  • Do not leave someone with a history of wandering unattended, as NIA advises.

Choose safeguards for the person and home

Possible home measures include door chimes or alarms, night lights, clear labels or symbols, door camouflage, and a fenced or otherwise secured outdoor area. NIA also suggests visible warning signs and a smart doorbell or alarm. Locks and barriers need careful planning: keep a key nearby in case of emergency, and never lock the person inside the home.

There is no single best aid for every person. Consider whether they remove wearable ID, whether you need an indoor alert or outdoor location support, the home layout, ease of use, and whether someone can respond promptly to alerts. Technology features vary; devices or services may involve purchase, activation, and recurring costs. No particular device is established here as tested or universally effective. The Alzheimer’s Association cautions that “these actions cannot guarantee that a person living with dementia won’t wander.”

United States emergency guidance and local variation

The 911 advice above reflects United States guidance. Local emergency procedures and alert systems, including Silver Alerts, vary by area; ask local police or emergency-management officials how they handle missing vulnerable adults. Do not treat an alert system or any distance estimate as a substitute for promptly reporting a disappearance.
