If a long Ethernet connection keeps dropping, first measure the entire cable route, then test the link with a short, known-good cable. That helps show whether the fault is the run itself, a connector, a port, or an endpoint. Ordinary twisted-pair copper Ethernet is designed for a channel of up to 100 meters; a longer route needs a suitable active extension or fiber, not simply a higher-category cable.
1. Measure the whole cable route
Count the actual copper path between devices, including patch cords, wall cable, patch panels, and couplers. The straight-line distance between rooms is not the cable length. Intel says the cable between a computer and switch must be less than 100 meters in its Ethernet cabling guidance; Cisco describes 100 meters as the ordinary maximum and notes that cable construction and patch-cord assumptions matter.

Use 100 meters as a channel design limit, not a guarantee that every cable marked Cat 5 or Cat 6 will work reliably at that distance. Intel’s guidance names Cat 5 or Cat 6 for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet adapter cabling, but the category printed on a cable does not prove that its conductors, terminations, or route are in good condition. Excessive flexible patch cable can also reduce reliable reach.

Disconnect and firmly reconnect the cable at the computer, router, switch, or other device. Check the plug latch, jack, any coupler, and accessible sections of the cable for looseness or damage. If touching or moving a connector makes the link drop, suspect a failing connection or damaged cable; replace or reterminate the affected part.

Each RJ-45 connection point adds another possible source of signal loss or intermittent electrical contact. If the run uses couplers or several patch connections, temporarily remove unnecessary ones during testing.
3. Isolate cable, port, and endpoint faults
- Temporarily connect the same devices with a short, known-good Ethernet cable. If the connection is stable, reconnect the long run and see whether the problem returns.
- Where practical, connect the cable to a known-working port. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether the failure follows the cable, the port, or the endpoint.
- If a short cable also drops, investigate the devices or ports rather than assuming the long run is responsible. Check the equipment’s link status, power, negotiation settings, and manufacturer-specific logs or diagnostics.
This swap test narrows down likely causes; a single successful test does not prove that a cable or port is fault-free under every condition.

4. Test the cable if swapping does not settle it
A basic Ethernet cable tester can identify common wiring problems, such as an open, short, or miswired pair. Test the run and replace or repair it if a pair reports a fault. Some managed switches also provide cable diagnostics, but availability and results depend on the model, port state, link speed, and cable; consult the switch’s documentation before interpreting a result.

If basic checks look normal but the link still drops, an installer can test the run with equipment designed to validate Ethernet performance and locate faults. Fluke describes its LinkIQ as testing and troubleshooting links from 10BASE-T to 10GBASE-T and reporting distance to fault; that sort of tester is generally an advanced diagnostic tool rather than a necessary first purchase for a home connection.

5. Choose the fix that matches the fault

6. Extend a route beyond copper Ethernet’s limit
For a route that must exceed the ordinary copper channel limit, use a suitable network switch, compliant repeater, or fiber solution selected for the devices, bandwidth, and environment. ENTTEC’s PoE guidance recommends a compliant PoE repeater or another switch for an extended PoE route, with each copper leg kept within 100 meters. Confirm voltage and device compatibility before using any PoE arrangement; a passive PoE setup can damage incompatible equipment.
