Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Follow the closure signs and barriers, then use the detour posted by the transportation authority or listed in its official road-condition service. Do not enter a closed ramp or let a navigation app overrule a closure sign. If there is no clearly safe route, stop somewhere legal and safe to reassess—or delay the trip.
If you have not left yet
Check the responsible transportation agency’s road-condition service or 511 for the ramp closure, its designated detour, and current conditions. Information and services vary by state and incident. Allow extra time or postpone the trip if official updates indicate a serious disruption.

For example, Indiana’s 511IN provides road conditions, cameras, and traffic speeds. INDOT says full closures prioritize safety and can help prevent backups that contribute to work-zone crashes: INDOT travel conditions.

- Obey signs, barriers, and traffic personnel. A closure means the ramp is not available. Do not cross a barricade, move it, or make an abrupt maneuver to try to reach the intended route.
- Take the open, signed route. Follow the official detour or other directions from traffic control. Ramp closures can shift traffic to nearby ramps and adjoining roads, so expect congestion around the area; the Federal Highway Administration describes these effects in its Ramp Management and Control Handbook.
- Reassess from a safe place. If the detour is unclear, continue to an open route and stop only where it is legal and safe before checking a map or seeking local information.
When a navigation app disagrees with road signs
Follow the closure controls and agency instructions, not the app’s reroute. Navigation data may not reflect a current closure, weather, or road condition. Oregon DOT warns that GPS can send drivers to roads that are unmaintained or impassable; its GPS navigation tips recommend checking TripCheck or 511 and being cautious about unfamiliar roads. A map or road atlas can help with orientation, but it cannot verify live closures.

In its August 2026 wildfire-season newsletter, ODOT advised following official detour signs and routes from transportation authorities rather than GPS directions onto local or forest roads that may not suit interstate traffic. Nearby local roads may also be closed, and a closure can last hours or days. ODOT advises against driving to a closure point to wait; during wildfire conditions, staying home if possible may be safer. See the ODOT newsletter.
Check that an alternate route suits your vehicle
An app’s suggested route may take you onto local roads that are unsuitable for your vehicle or for increased traffic. This matters especially for commercial, oversized, or tall vehicles: low bridges, weight limits, and road capacity can make a local-road detour inappropriate. Check the responsible agency’s instructions for vehicle restrictions before following an alternative.

New Jersey DOT’s advice for the I-80 sinkhole closure illustrates why: it tells motorists to remain on designated detours or alternate routes and warns that GPS may divert traffic onto local roads with low bridges or weight restrictions. Those instructions and routes apply to that specific closure, not to other ramps. Consult the NJDOT I-80 sinkhole information for its current details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf there is no clear, safe route
- Do not improvise onto an unfamiliar road just to avoid a delay.
- Do not stop or wait at the closure point unless traffic personnel direct you to do so.
- Pull over only where stopping is legal and safe, then check the relevant agency’s updates or seek local information.
- Delay or change the trip if conditions remain uncertain or unsafe.
These are general U.S.-oriented steps, not a determination of the law for every state. Signs, rules, contact channels, and detours depend on the location and incident. Use current instructions from the responsible transportation authority for the particular closure.
