If a game starts crashing or a save stops loading after a mod change, first protect your saves, then test the mod and game-version compatibility without overwriting the affected files. A mod may be involved, but removing it from an in-progress save can cause additional problems, and no general method guarantees that a damaged save can be repaired.
1. Protect your saves before troubleshooting
Stop saving over the affected slot. Copy your saves to a separate location outside the active game folder or cloud-sync path before disabling mods, changing versions, or reinstalling. If the game relies on configuration files, a mod list, or load-order data, preserve those too. An optional second local folder, platform backup, or external drive can serve as a separate copy; storage protects a backup, but it does not repair a file that is already corrupted.

Cloud behavior differs by game and service, so do not assume a cloud copy is independent or untouched. Check how your platform handles sync before making changes that could propagate to the backup.
Keep unmodded or pre-change saves when possible. Bethesda Support advises Skyrim Special Edition players to keep unmodded saves available for reverting from modded gameplay; that is useful Skyrim-specific guidance, not a universal promise that an older save will always work. 2. Record what changed and check compatibility
Before changing anything else, note the exact game and edition, platform, installed game build, mod manager, mod name and version, recent updates, when the crash occurs, and the complete error text. This makes it easier to follow the right publisher instructions or give the mod author enough detail to investigate.
Compare the installed game build with the mod’s stated requirements and update history. Check any documented dependencies and load-order instructions as well. A game patch can make a mod stop working until its creator updates it; Bethesda notes this possibility for Skyrim. 3. Test whether the mod is involved
Use the game’s supported controls or mod manager to disable the suspected mod as a diagnostic, then test a separate known-good save or a new game if available. Change one thing at a time and keep the original files. A clean launch can help identify whether mods are implicated, but it does not prove that a save created with those mods is safe to continue using.

Some games provide a specific diagnostic launch mode. Paradox’s helpdesk documents --disableMods --noWorkshop for its troubleshooting context; these flags are not a general command for other games. Paradox support: “Save doesn’t load: Mods cause error”.
4. Try a save from before the change
If a save made before the mod was installed or updated loads, preserve the affected save separately and use the earlier one as a possible recovery point. Before continuing, check the mod’s uninstall or update directions: some mods alter data that a save may rely on, so simply removing the mod and resaving can create further trouble.

Bethesda’s Skyrim guidance describes looking for saves without the mod marker; if no unaffected save exists, its advice says a new game may be necessary. That marker and recovery path are specific to Skyrim, not a universal interface or rule. Bethesda Support’s Skyrim save rollback guidance.
5. Use the game’s official repair path if problems persist
If saves still fail after a supported clean-launch test, consult the game publisher’s instructions for verifying or repairing files and for handling modded saves. Avoid deleting folders, reinstalling, rolling back the game, or resuming an affected save based on instructions for a different game or platform.

Bethesda’s clean-reinstall instructions apply to Skyrim on PC: they describe removing mod files, disabling third-party mod managers, preserving user data, and reinstalling as a later step. The article also warns that a mod-corrupted save may remain unusable. It is not a universal repair recipe, and verifying files or reinstalling cannot be assumed to restore a save. If one mod appears to trigger the problem, share the game build, mod version, platform, mod manager, load order and dependencies, steps that reproduce the issue, full error text or crash log, and whether a clean launch or earlier save behaves differently.
