Do not cross barriers, follow informal paths, or detour onto the beach below an unstable bluff. Check current alerts before you travel and follow the signs and staff instructions you find on site.
What to do at the closure
- Stop at the sign or barrier. Do not go past it to reach a viewpoint, take a photograph, find a shortcut, or get to the beach. The National Park Service says visitors at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park must stay out of closed areas and away from unstable cliff edges, which can collapse without warning. NPS safety guidance describes the closure of the original Hōlei Sea Arch viewing area after cracks and instability were found.
- Read the closure notice. Check what area is closed and whether the sign identifies a bypass or alternative. Follow a marked route only when the responsible authority identifies it as the diversion. If no authorized route is clear, turn back and ask the park, council, or coastal authority for current directions.
- Use an official alternative. Confirm that the suggested viewpoint or trail is open before heading there. At Hōlei Sea Arch, the NPS opened a safer viewing area farther from the edge; that replacement was specific to that site, not permission to choose another spot on your own.
- Keep away from both the top and base of the cliff. A beach or shoreline below a closed bluff is not automatically safe: falling rocks can strike people below, and rough, wave-swept coasts bring additional risks, including falling and drowning.
- Recheck conditions. Review the land manager’s latest alerts and weather information before setting out, then obey current signs and staff directions at the site. Conditions and access can change.
How to choose a diversion or alternative viewpoint
When an official notice offers more than one option, compare the features that matter for your visit. Local authorities may route people onto an inland trail, a linking path, or a designated replacement lookout; these are site-specific arrangements, not routes to transfer to another coast.

| What to check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Official status | A route or viewpoint explicitly identified by the responsible authority, with signs or route directions to follow. |
| Distance and difficulty | The local route description. The cited authorities do not provide a universal ranking of diversion length or difficulty. |
| Accessibility | Specific access details for the alternative; do not assume a diversion is suitable for every visitor. |
| Exposure | Whether the route keeps you away from unstable cliffs and surf. Prefer a signed inland diversion or designated lookout over an unofficial path. |
| Destination status | Confirmation that the viewpoint or endpoint itself is open, not merely that a path appears passable. |
Why unofficial shortcuts and beach detours are unsafe
A visible path is not proof that it is authorized or stable. NSW National Parks advises visitors to stay on marked tracks, obey barriers, and view from designated lookouts. Point Reyes National Seashore warns against going beyond fences; informal “social paths” can worsen erosion and create hazards for visitors and rescuers. Do not assume a closure stops at the fence, or that a route is safe because other people are using it.

Nor does going below the cliff remove the danger. Point Reyes warns that rocks dislodged from above may strike people at the base. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park also warns of unstable edges and a rough, wave-swept coast where visitors risk falling and drowning.

Planning for a remote coastal walk
For remote routes, consult the official park or coastal authority alerts and follow its local emergency guidance. NSW National Parks recommends telling someone your walking plan and using local emergency-location tools. Emergency numbers and procedures vary by jurisdiction, so use the information for the place you are visiting rather than assuming one number applies everywhere.
If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services and give the clearest location you can. Do not enter a closed area or put yourself at risk trying to reach them; rescue access can also be made more hazardous by unstable ground and informal tracks.

Examples of how local diversions differ
The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority directs visitors around unsafe Jan Juc–Torquay coastal sections using inland and linking trails. The Wales Coast Path publishes location-specific instructions that may route walkers inland around a cordoned cliff hazard or onto a replacement line after a collapse. These examples illustrate why the local authority’s directions matter; neither route is a general-purpose alternative for another destination.

A closure notice or route description reflects a particular place and time; it cannot establish that a trail or viewpoint elsewhere—or even the same one later—is open.
