If a Blu-ray drive reports a model that may not match its internal hardware, stop before flashing it. Why a firmware-reported model may not be enough
On September 30, 2026, the RPCS3 project warned of a recent influx of fake Blu-ray drives. As reported by Tom’s Hardware, the reported pattern involves older mechanisms that cannot read PS3 discs inside higher-end enclosures and packaging, with firmware altered to report a different model. The warning gives no count or rate, so it does not establish how common these drives are.

The RPCS3 project described the pattern this way: “There has been a recent influx of fake Blu-ray drives. These fakes use older drives that cannot read PS3 discs, with enclosures and packaging for higher-end models, plus spoofed firmware.” The warning concerns a particular compatibility problem; it does not mean every drive with an unexpected report is counterfeit.

A displayed model number is a clue, not proof of the mechanism inside. MakeMKV’s support forum documentation cautions that different hardware can share the same drive name, and compatibility can depend on the precise model and firmware version. A drive that plays ordinary Blu-ray movies is not thereby shown to be suitable for reading PS3 discs or for another specific task.

What to do first
1. Pause firmware changes
Do not flash, cross-flash, or try to “correct” the reported model while you are checking authenticity or considering a return. A firmware write changes the drive’s current state and could complicate diagnosis or a return. This is a precaution based on the reported spoofing and model-variation problem, not a quoted manufacturer warranty rule.
2. Preserve the purchase and device evidence
Save the product page, listing claims, seller identity, order confirmation, and packaging. Photograph the drive label and exterior clearly. If the operating system or a drive utility shows a model or firmware version, capture it, but identify it as a reported value rather than proof of what hardware is inside. Keep seller messages and any compatibility-test errors as well.
3. Inspect visible details without opening the drive
Look for misspellings on labels, misaligned logos, questionable manufacturing dates, or material covering PCB markings visible from outside. Tom’s Hardware reports these as possible warning signs, not conclusive tests. Do not disassemble the drive just to inspect its PCB if that might damage it or affect return eligibility.

4. Check the exact hardware for the intended use
Use available non-invasive information to establish the most precise model and revision you can, then consult current compatibility guidance for the job you need the drive to do. RPCS3’s warning links to a Redump guide with identification information and images; check that guide directly for current details. A firmware or chipset report can contribute a clue, but compare it with independent identifiers where possible rather than relying on the model string alone. The available reporting does not establish a universal, conclusive authentication method.
5. Contact the seller or marketplace if the item does not match
If the delivered drive differs from the listing or does not perform the advertised function, submit the evidence through the marketplace’s official dispute or return process and request an appropriate resolution. Keep communication on-platform and use buyer-protected channels where available. The applicable rights and deadlines depend on your location and transaction terms, so check those promptly.
6. Describe evidence, not an unproven accusation
When contacting the seller or posting about the drive, state the observable mismatch, reported firmware values, and test results. A spoofable firmware string or cosmetic irregularity justifies further checking; neither alone proves that a particular unit or seller committed fraud.
