First check whether the delay is on the Bitcoin network or inside the exchange. Find the transfer’s exact status in your exchange history, then use its transaction ID to check whether it has been broadcast and how many confirmations it has. If the exchange shows On hold or Failed, or the stated confirmation requirement has been met without credit, contact the exchange through its official support channel.
Is the delay on the Bitcoin network or at the exchange?
A transfer can be delayed because it is waiting to be included in a block or to accumulate the confirmations the exchange requires. It can also be delayed while the exchange processes or reviews it. The transaction ID, confirmation count and exchange status help distinguish these cases.

| What to check | Network delay is more likely when… | Exchange delay or review is more likely when… |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction ID | The sending service has broadcast the transaction and the ID appears in a Bitcoin block explorer. | No transaction ID is available, or the exchange lists an internal processing or review status. |
| Confirmations | The transaction is unconfirmed or its confirmation count is still below the exchange’s requirement. | The required confirmations are met but the deposit is not credited. |
| Exchange status | The exchange says the deposit is confirming or awaiting confirmations. | The exchange says the transfer is processing internally, On hold or Failed. |
Use the exchange’s own definitions: status labels and confirmation requirements vary by platform. Kraken, for example, distinguishes deposits awaiting confirmation from withdrawals still in internal processing or already sent to the network in its deposit processing guide and withdrawal status guide.

Kraken’s support guide says Bitcoin blocks are mined on average about every 15 minutes and gives an example of crediting a BTC deposit after three confirmations, approximately 45 minutes. These are Kraken’s average and platform-specific example, not a guaranteed settlement deadline or a rule for other exchanges. Kraken notes that actual block times vary; an individual block can take 30 or 60 minutes. Kraken’s guide defines a confirmation this way: “Once a transaction has been included in a mined block, the transaction has received one confirmation.”
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
If your Bitcoin deposit is delayed
- Open the deposit record. Find the transaction in the exchange’s funding or transaction history. Read its exact status and the exchange’s stated confirmation requirement. Kraken’s deposit statuses include Pending/Processing, Credited, Successful and On hold; other exchanges may use different labels. Kraken’s deposit status guide explains its labels.
- Check whether the sender broadcast it. If your wallet or sending service provides a transaction ID, look it up in a reputable Bitcoin block explorer. If there is no ID, the transfer may not have been broadcast; ask the sending service to check rather than repeatedly creating transfers.
- Verify the transfer details. Compare the asset, destination address and network with the exchange’s deposit instructions. Check any required memo or tag where applicable, the minimum deposit, and whether the exchange has announced maintenance. Kraken’s missing-deposit checklist covers these checks.
- Escalate when the checks do not resolve it. Contact official exchange support if the required confirmations are complete but the funds are not credited, or if no deposit record appears after the exchange’s expected window. Include the transaction ID and transfer details.
If your Bitcoin withdrawal is delayed
- Read the withdrawal status and any error message. An internal processing status means the exchange has not necessarily broadcast the transaction. Follow the exchange’s stated processing window or ask its support team. If the withdrawal has been sent to the network, use its transaction ID to check blockchain progress. Kraken distinguishes Initiated and Pending internal stages from Sending after broadcast, followed by statuses such as Success, On hold or Failed; these definitions are specific to Kraken. See Kraken’s withdrawal status definitions.
- Check the recorded destination and network. Compare them with the details you intended to use. Do not assume a withdrawal can be recalled once it has been broadcast; follow the exchange’s cancellation rules while it is still eligible.
- Use the exchange’s official support route for a hold or failure. Ask what review or error applies. On Kraken, cancellation requests apply only to Initiated or Pending withdrawals, and cancellation of a Pending withdrawal is not guaranteed. Kraken’s status guide gives its specific rules.
If the exchange says “On hold”
A hold can reflect an account, funding-limit, password-change or payment-method review rather than a Bitcoin confirmation delay. Check the exchange’s account messages and any notice attached to the transfer, then follow its instructions or contact official support. Kraken says some holds release automatically while others need manual review. Its examples include a 72-hour hold after certain purchase types, a seven-day hold associated with some ACH Plaid cash deposits, and a withdrawal hold of up to 24 hours after a password change when sending to a new address. These are Kraken-specific examples and may depend on account circumstances. Kraken’s withdrawal-hold guidance describes its rules.
